Simian and 64 bit Windows 7
« on: February 18, 2012, 10:44:50 AM »

New computer with this version of windows 7 installed.  Anyone tried the current version of Simian on this? Problems? (BSI recommends 32 bit)

Run the installer and see.  I know when I run the Audiovault installer, if it's 64 Bit, it knows what to do in regards to file placement.  I would imagine BSI thought of that too.  It's pretty hard to get a modern computer that isn't 64 Bit.

Tom, I am going to take a gander and say it will likely work -- As long as you have proper audio drivers for your sound card etc..  Of course, we all know BSI won't support anything beyond what they say they support.

[side note, the demo of Simian 2.1 runs on Windows 7 64 bit here -- mind you its a locked down version of Simian for demo purposes (cant change log, edit or anything)] but it runs so I am guessing the actual version would too.

We have the demo version up, too. But it can't be turned off or minimized.  Next step is to find our Simian disc and try an install from that & see what happens.

64 bit Windows will run 32 bit programs just fine, the only thing it won't run is really old 16 bit stuff. But considering 32 bit Windows has been around since Windows 95, pretty much everything is at least 32 bit meaning it should work. The computer industry is heading towards 64 bit so its getting harder to find systems that ship with 32 bit Windows anymore.

I tried to get 64 bit to run in 32 bit mode.  Downloaded a different version of windows.  Still wouldn't work with Simian.  Have it running on a 32 bit 7 just fine.  Several in fact.

The programs are compatible as previously stated, however, if the installer isn't addressed, it will not work.

The only limitations are:

1.  All your devices need a 64 Bit driver (remote control & sound card).

If that is met, as long as the installer recognizes 64 bit Windows and places everything in the proper directories, it should work.  From what you are saying, BSI has not created a 64 Bit aware installer.

The nice thing about Simian is the fact that I can go to Goodwill and buy a pre XP device that will run Simian. This is addressed with an outboard drive, even usb. In a pinch my $30 computer runs Simian. I keep it for times like that.

My current ill computer that is 64 bit will not run Simian or anything else. Sound card problem i think.

The one thing I have always liked about Simian is that with a little care it can be very powerful and yet does not need core2duo resources with 4GB of ram just for the "database" ontop of the GUI etc.. like some of the bigger name products do.

Chris's advice about drivers on 64bit is the important part here: Although many PCs come with Win7 x64 pre-installed, it's the hardware compatibility you need to watch out for.  Does your Antex, Digigram or Audioscience card have a 64-bit driver?  Does your touchscreen, GPI card and so on?

Plus, of course, you can break the 4GB RAM barrier if you want some extra headroom.
