If this was a April Fools Day joke, then explain this article...

http://blogs.westword.com/backbeat/2012/03/hot_1071_flips_formats.php

If it is an April fools joke, then it was 2 days early since the flip was on March 30th...
We'll see how long it does last, I hope it sticks...but anyway KDHT can stand for Dance, House & Techno.  Grin

I STRONGLY do not believe that this is an April Fools joke.  The traffic on the Hot 107.1 board on FB clearly shows the demand and like for the format that this serves.  All Access also did an article about this, talking to the PD of the station.  You don't mess with All Access in that sense.

But here's my theory on WHY people in here would want this to be a "joke".  There are those that WISH it to be a joke because of their disdain towards the music (and yes there are a couple of people that HATE dance and hate someone like me for fighting for it), especially that we've been wanting such a format again since the loss of Pulse 87 on the FM and KNOW that in a market such as New York, there is a demand for it.

The words "niche" has been thrown around in here like tomatoes being thrown around in Spain.  And yet for what WE are seeking, we also have to accept what's going on in the pop world as well.  Yeah, put Rihanna, Pit Bull and Flo Rida in here too....so as long as Wynter Gordon, Nadia Ali, etc. get on there as well.  You have to play all angles in this, and I get that.

Those same people also misunderstand what I say because they are "stubborn" to see things as they always have, but not wanting to understand from a core perspective.  Which is OKAY actually because for those that are open to knowing, then we're here to help.  But if the ignorance continues to block their view, then the hate remains.

I am very glad for those in the Denver area to get such a station and I do hope that whatever comes out of this, can expand to other markets.  For those that love dance, support it Smiley.

Dance is a "niche" format.. face it..  I don't disagree on that it should get some space on FM somewhere... of course I also feel that stations like KLove exist and serve a market and despite what some say deserve their FM they got.

Dance will never be mainstream as Country or CHR, or Rhy/CHR or Rock is, that's just the facts. I am not a hater or against the format though.

I doubt this change in Denver is a joke -- hopefully it works out for them.. Glad to see a broadcaster taking a risk on something other than the same 40 BDS Spun CHR Chart songs played 80x a week.

To make up for my earlier post quoting from an article from RadioInsight speculating (apparently incorrectly) that the Denver station's new dance music format may be an April Fool's joke  Wink, below is a link to a CNN article indicating that EDM is gaining mainstream acceptance.

Or maybe they took on the calls when the station originally went Top 40 as Denver's Hot 107.1.

This station's flipped way more times in the past several years than a station in a top 20 market ought to, which doesn't really give its formats a chance to take hold.  Regardless of the booster, it still has a bad signal (coverage maps be damned, have any of you actually driven around Denver trying to listen to this station?  Because I have) and will probably abandon this move within a year or two.

According to this FCC map, KDHT's booster covers even more in the 60 dbu than even the Radio-Locator map indicates...
Either way the booster does provide city-grade to most of the immediate Denver area, and therefore it has a nearly-full market signal.

http://maps.google.com/?q=http://transition.fcc.gov/fcc-bin/contourplot.kml?gmap=2%26appid=1077219%26call=KDHT-3-FM%26freq=107.1.5%26contour=60%26city=AURORA%26state=CO

60dbu is not city grade; 70 dbu is. 65 dbu is about the minimum signal that will penetrate homes and workplaces, where about 70% of radio listening takes place.

The word "niche" is only brought up in a negative context when it involves a dance music station. There's nothing wrong with being a niche format as long as it fills a void and bills well. However, the dance format is not a niche format.Top 40 radio has been hijacking the dance/uptempo sounds to get high ratings in the last three years.Bottom line there is a demand for dance music.

I wouldn't call it "hijacking" by CHR.  The whole concept of Top 40/CHR is that you play the hits.. you play what people want to hear.  It always goes in phases.  Rock will be huge for a few years, and CHR will play rock.  Hip Hop's big for a few years, CHR plays hip hop.  Turbopop/dance has been big for a couple of years, so CHR's been playing it.  That's the beauty of CHR... it's always changing.  Tastes change, and CHR is nimble enough to move with it.

That's exactly my point about Dance...it is in demand currently and has given top 40 big numbers. It is not a niche format as some might want to keep repeating.
