The NEW 93 Nine, The Mountain Flagstaff
« on: March 04, 2013, 11:12:54 AM »

The M-F AM Drive "Rock Shop" is gone.  The good news is that Eddie Miller is still there, but the Classic Rock has left the building.

Sure would be nice to see some numbers regarding listeners in Northern Arizona.  Kinda' curious about FM 98.9 cutting into 93.9 the blowtorch's audience shares...  Here's what was on FB this morning:
Eddie Miller:
To all my radio-listening friends. I thank you for all your support of The Rock Shoppe over the years, but The Rock Shoppe officially ended at 10 AM last Friday. This makes way for an exciting, new chapter for 93-9 The Mountain! More details in the coming weeks as we fine-tune. IF YOU HAVE LIKED THE ROCK SHOPPE...This page will be "evaporating" very soon...PLEASE "LIKE" 93-9 The Mountain, as this will now become the central point to stay in touch for comments, information, etc. Tune-in to The New 93-9 and CRANK IT UP!! (We sure are!)

93.9 always tried to claim the Classic Rock format but in reality was a Classic Hits station with a few rock titles splattered in the music.

103.7 comes in and takes the younger male audience from 93.9 The Mountain and 96.7 The Wolf in Flagstaff
92.5 comes along and eats the female audience from 93.9 The Mountain in Prescott.
98.9 is not a huge player but makes a dent in 93.9/96.7/103.7

So there were a lot of factors into forcing The Mountain to move their anchor a bit.  The biggest issue with The Mountain has always been they have a significant amount of female listeners.  One good swipe and the station would begin to topple, and it did.

Interesting, eric...but where do you get your audience numbers?  Just wondering...

KMGN needs a more active rock leaning playlist with better station imaging. The NEW in the name should reflect it through my speakers. Too many great new artists are being left out. The playlists sound very dated like a version of 1998 KZGL. Time to hit the refresh button over there guys and try again.

Personally, I think that KMGN shot themselves in the foot by changing the format.   Sure, I think 98.9 was a huge factor, but it's not like they're losing advertising dollars to KZXK, cause they don't sell advertising.   KMGN has the best signal in northern Arizona.  96.7 The Wolf's signal is nowhere near as good.

The new format is rather odd.  You might hear 4 classic rock tunes in a row, and then a few songs that weren't part of the format before.  l understand what they're trying to do, but it isn't really being executed that well.  Would you like to hire me as a consultant?  I made the mistake of giving away my consultant services for free to them in the past when I worked there in the 90's.

The last time Arbitron surveyed Flagstaff, KMGN was #1.  Sure, they might not be #1 anymore, but you can make good money even if you're only getting a small piece of the pie.  I would have......oops, like I said, I'm not giving away any free advice here.
