KING and KONG expand daily newscasts

KFFV's main subchannel is 24/7 infomercials from OnTV4U. Plus a couple of E/I programs. MeTV would be GREAT to KFFV.

KVOS and KFFV are both owned by Michael Dell and last I heard, KVOS was leaving the air eventually to become wireless spectrum of some kind.

Promos started tonight on KING for the new 7PM newscast starting on Monday.

Bounds, Enerson, and Matsukawa were all in the promos. Presumably the lineup will be the same as for the 5 and 6:30; Bounds and Enerson as primary anchors but Matsukawa present in some role (whether reporting or at the anchor desk) every newscast excepting when she is on vacation.

We know Piercy is solo at 9PM on KONG; the real question is who is the new weekend evening anchor Piercy hinted at in his twitter a few days ago ("you'll just have to wait and see"). Anyone other than Francavilla waiting out a non-compete?

Greg Copeland announced on his Facebook page that he will become the new weekend anchor of KING 5 Morning News. Meg Coyle is becoming the new weekend evening anchor. My guess is that Shaniqua Manning is moving up at NWCN and will be the next co-anchor of the noon news.

The weekend assignments are rather interesting. Honestly, I'm not a huge Meg Coyle fan and would have rather seen Copeland in the evening slot. Hopefully, Shaniqua Manning will be the new noon co-anchor. I like a her style of anchoring.

OTOH, the surprising thing is Jean Enerson at 7pm. Jean is actually working an extra half hour?!? I wonder how much they had to pay her to do that! And Dennis Bounds isn't getting any younger, either!

At 69, I hope she's getting good pay and benefits. Like I've said before, she could be 85 and still ticking with Dennis Bounds. She's a legend!

Was scrolling through my satellite TV guide yesterday to see what new programming the locals will have in early September. I looked on September 9, and KING 5 will launch a new 7 pm newscast, and Evening Magazine will slide to 7:30. On KONG, they will launch KING 5 News at 9 pm, as well as continue their 10 pm hour long newscast. Two hours of prime time news on KONG. I wonder who will be anchoring these additional newscasts?

KONG moves Dr. Phil to 6 pm, Katie to 7 pm, Access Hollywood to 8 pm, and Inside Edition moves from KING to KONG and airs at 8:30 pm. Then the two hours of prime time news.

Is this RADIO-Discussions dot com? Just checking. What gives with the TV posts? Just throwing it out there. Am I the only one?

Mentioned before.
There is NO Seattle TV forum on Radio Discussions. If there was, this topic wouldn't exist on this part of the board. They can have an "Illinois TV" forum but no Seattle forum, which is weird IMO. So all of the KOMO, KING, KIRO, KCPQ stuff goes here since there is no forum to write them in.

And re the rumor about 4PM news - if it happens, KONG will probably grab Ellen's show right away. I wouldn't be surprised that KING turns into NBC Primetime, NBC News, and local news. And nothing else. Just like what KSNV 3 in Las Vegas is trying to do.

Who is making these decisions? Is it Belo? And why? This property will be Gannett soon. Is there some agreement in place? And when does the Gannett transfer expect to close?

I too find it interesting that the newscasts are expanding so rapidly with a purchase agreement in place... Perhaps Gannett wanted to do this and had it written into the agreement that it would be implemented before the full takeover. Maybe they want to gain traction before the fall sweeps...

Watching a bit of the hour long news at 9 with Rob Piercy. Looks like they are using a different studio (or a different corner of the current studio). Weekend Meterologist (and M-W weatherman on NWCN) Jim Guy is doing the weather. Renner is working tonight, so I guess this newscast will not feature him. I wonder if Jim Guy is going M-F on this newscast. KING5 has posted on the "jobs" section of their website that they are looking for another Meteorologist.

EDIT - From Meg Coyle's twitter. Lisa Van Cise is also moving to weekend evenings, with Meg. Presumably Jim Guy is M-F on the new 9PM news and on NWCN...

Watched Meg Coyle all week on at 11PM with Dennis Bounds. I can't figure out what it is, but I just can't warm up to her as an anchor.

I guess we were spoiled for so many years watching KING where they had an entire stable of prime time, top 15 market talent spread throughout their newscasts (Bounds, Porter, Schauffler, Goode, Enerson, Matsukawa, Jung).

Announced tonight on KING 5 News at 11; Jean Enerson will be off for a few weeks for hip surgery due to too much running and some falls skiing last winter...

Get well soon, Jean!

I also agree that KING used to have great anchors. Now, we're settling for Meg Coyle. I just don't see it. On weekend evenings, I would rather watch Monique Ming Laven on KIRO. But I guess that these are the first effects of the Gannett acquisition. Gannett tends to go cheaper, rather than with quality people.

I hope Jean's surgery goes great. And then she will be right back at that anchor desk, as she's been the past 45 years...

Meg Coyle is ok, but a little too low-key for my taste. I know, the NW is low-key in general, but I will agree that while she seems quite intelligent, her tv presence is less than bright. This isn't meant as an insult, I think she adds a lot to the team, but perhaps would be better as a reporter.

Will be interesting to see what Gannett does with KING. I do know that Gannett is a smart company, and they know that cookie-cutter doesn't work. So their changes may not be substantive. Sinclair and Cox will be watching closely, and I expect the competition to pick up in the Spring of 2014, bigtime.

I also predict Jean's hours will be cut back again even after her surgery. I can also predict that all three of the majors in Seattle, (KING, KOMO, and KIRO) will be looking for a new major anchor (male or female) within the next 6 months. But Seattle is a tricky market, and the next major anchor hire needs to be exactly the right person. (NW sensibility, warm, friendly, and humble).

How long will Dan Lewis last on KOMO - another 10 years maybe? Also what about Raible on KIRO?

Yeah, Dan has been tempted by the bigs, I know he turned down a Bay Area anchor job years ago. I would guess he will end his career at KOMO, or at the very least, Seattle. (Though I'm sure his non-compete is tough). If so, he will become the longest lasting male anchor in Seattle tv history. And deservadly so.

Raible. Who knows? Ratings will determine this, and while KIRO has made gains in recent years, I can't believe they are happy with just "being competitive".

Here in Phoenix, Gannett didn't keep an older, but still popular main male anchor. He went to another station for a few years, but never really caught on there and is now retired. I hope that Gannett won't do the same thing in Seattle.
