What is happening on Gary Bryan's show? This week he played Zorba The Greek and Sukiyaki and, this morning, Hello Mary Lou, the last single by Ricky Nelson (who would hereafter be known as Rick Nelson). These songs are not part of the regular playlist and KRTH hasn't played any of them for many years...until this week. "Curiouser and curiouser," as Alice would say.

It was my "Viola"........remember? KRTH must have read our long and repetitive posts about the lack of lost hits and too much Brown Eyed Girl.....They have responded! LOL

KRTH just ran a promo with Charlie Van Dyke intoning, "When you hear this song on the radio, you're listening to K-Earth 101." Then they played Rick James' Super Freak. Uh, Charlie? When I hear that song on the radio, I could also be listening to KHHT.

Instead of all the r&b and classic rock, KRTH should be playing the pop groups who aren't played on other stations: ABBA, Aqua, Hanson, Beach Boys, Real McCoy, Lobo, Pablo Cruise, New Kids On The Block, Bay City Rollers, et al. Then KRTH would have a unique identity instead of sounding like a blend of KLOS, KHHT and KCBS-FM.

KRTH as we knew it has moved on. So should we.The only remnants left are the jocks. The music has evolved - and the sprinkling of 60s songs interspersed with 80s makes no sense. KRTH HD2 is not a bad temporary alternative until someone else on the FM dial decides this is a format worth bringing back. Someone will in time. The *bay area is an example of this. KOSF seems to be the heir apparent of the defunct KFRC, and seems to be moderately successful, even though they are nowhere close to the old KRTH in terms of *the presentation. The format works because of the music. Until this happens in LA, *wouldn't it be nice if the HD channel would bring back some of the classic jocks, steve jay, brian beirne johnny hayes to name a few, have charlie van dyke become the station voice, maybe even rerun some of the old Robert w Morgan and real don Steele shows. Why not? This could be a nice station to listen to on occasion and satisfy those of us who have left the mother ship.

Mister SRF, what's wrong with good old-fashioned pop music? Pablo Cruise, Hanson and the Bay City Rollers had several top-ten hits; MMMBop and Saturday Night went to number one. Do you think nobody would want to hear those songs on the radio today? Or do you equate them with the previously discussed You Light Up My Life---big hits then but no longer liked now.

Mister krth101, from 2005 to 2008 there was a KHJ tribute station in Madras, Oregon. KHJA-102.1 was a low-power FM that played the 1960s-70s hits and the old "Boss Radio" jingles, along with song IDs recorded by some of the original "Boss Jocks." Unfortunately, KHJA didn't broadcast online...and, even more unfortunately, the station switched to a Spanish-language Christian format in 2008. I agree with you, though: such a tribute station would be perfect for HD. The majority of the fifteen people who actually own an HD radio would definitely enjoy it.

More HD snark. Honestly, I don't get it. No, it's not a success by any means, but it does keep out-of-favor musical genres on the air. What's everyone's problem with buying a receiver?

Oh, and Pablo Cruise ("Whatcha Gonna Do") and Bay City Rollers ("Saturday Night") still have a home on the WDRC-FM playlist. If they're driving listeners away, it certainly isn't reflected in the ratings.

HD Snark. Didn't he write horror stories for pulp magazines in the 1920s and '30s? Or am I thinking of H.P. Lovecraft?

I know of no one who owns an HD radio. I listen to some of the HD channels online. KRTH's 1955-69 "Classics" HD channel seems to have a playlist of only 400 burned-out songs. What a waste of a channel! Perhaps HD radios would sell better if stores actually advertised them...and if FM stations did a better job of promoting their HD channels.

No need to buy an HD receiver. With the Internet and smart phones these stations are easily accessible. A tribute station to the great stations and jocks of all time - think of the possibilities. Not just KRTH, but legendary stations like KHJ, KFRC, WRKO, WLS and more. A great place for those of us out of the demo.

Hey, I like Pablo Cruise. At least the hits anyway - I don't have any of their albums. But every now and then I definitely like to find my place in the sun.

There is a station at 1430 KYNO in Fresno that is doing much the same. They run Charlie tunas syndicated show in the mornings then jockless the rest of the day. Unfortunately they have a very limited playlist and the jingle package they run is perhaps the least popular of the original KHJ collection. That and the fact it is on the am dial make it difficult to listen to for any length of time.

KRTH HD Classics was an interesting station at one time, but the playlist has been significantly downsized to Jay Coffee levels. It is like they took the Coffee playlist from 10 years ago and put it on a loop. Even local HD radio now insults its listeners, just the ones in a different demo.

So, as usual, it's back to SiriusXM Sixties on Six. Their weekly countdown show is really good. Lot's of great songs that haven't been played in years with an intelligent host who gives lots of interesting and relevant background information on the music. It is a joy, KRTH Classics, uhh, not so much.

ChannelFlipper, let me simultaneously correct your spelling and explain the difference: Coffee will keep you awake, whereas a playlist created by Jay Coffey will put you to sleep. :)

They would also have way fewer listeners. Pablo Cruise? HANSON??? Bay City Rollers?

Nothing wrong with Pablo Cruise songs: "Whatcha Gonna Do" & "Love Will Find A Way" are just fine. I'd be really hesitant to play Hanson at this time, those late 90's boy bands....not sure about them yet . BCR, maybe on a weekend 70's special.

Frankly I'd rather hear Debby Boone over Hanson any day of the week, Rewind!
