Album 88 dropping daytime music format in June for news

I genuinely want to know just how unique and different the news operation on 88.5 is going to be? Will it serve new listeners who otherwise have no option for what they want, or is it just going to subdivide the existing audience for radio news?

The press release says students will continue to program after 7PM. So maybe they'll keep some of the current programming there.

Big deal. After 7:00 PM, I'm at home, with full access to the internet, the music channels on cable TV, and my entire collection of pre-recorded music. Why would I turn on my radio at night? Radio is the one medium you can easily access in the car when driving around in the day time. It's not like the old days when we'd gather around the old Philco to listen to Fibber McGee and Molly. The only radios I have are in my cars, and an old boom-box hidden away in a closet.

However, I do a lot of driving around, and my radio is ALWAYS on when I'm in the car.

Edit: I forgot. My MP3 player also picks up FM. I sometimes use it to listen to Prairie Home Companion on Saturday nights. Which, come to think of it, is a lot like gathering 'round the old Philco.

Keep in mind that GSU doesn't care about listeners. Their primary concern is their students. That's why I say creating a petition that they reconsider their decision is a waste of time. They don't care that people in Atlanta will lose a radio station. They're turning this asset over to GPB for the money, but also for the responsibility. GPB will take responsibility for turning this radio station into a training ground for their students. I understand none of that matters to you, but that's why they're doing this. It's always interesting when you have a station owner who really doesn't care about the kinds of things a commercial owner cares about.

I am not suggesting that the people involved should not do what they're doing. They're doing what they think they need to do, and from their perspectives, it's probably the right move. I'm simply lamenting the fact that the best thing on Atlanta radio is disappearing -- great music in the daytime.

I understand. However apparently 8000 have signed this petition. It's a waste of time. But a great testament to this station.
