No, blame it on the FCC rules...
KBIU was on 103.7 prior to 103.7 KVST being purchased and upgraded by Cumulus to LaPorte as a Class C...to make room for that, KBIU had to move or be taken dark....Cumulus decided to move it to 103.3 (it runs a directional antenna and east of LCH you can not listen to it down the road for long to protect co and adj channels to the east and it dropped power because of Lufkin being on 103.3)...meanwhile 103.3 K277AG was already on in Beaumont as a translator for 104.5 KKMY....when KKMY was on its old 450 ft tower, it had poor building penetration into Beaumont...the translator was licensed at (iirc) 180 watts at the CC studios (originally, it was on the old KLVI tower at 27 Sawyer St when KLVI was there before moving to the I10 location)...when KBIU moved, K277AG had to power down to keep its 1mV contour from touching KBIU's new 103.3 1mV contour....(I always wondered why they did not go for 104.9 instead of 103.3 for the translator...being close to 104.5's freq would have made more sense since the AFC on table top radios would pull the rcvrs in to the stronger signal.....oh well thats all in the past)...When KKMY upgraded to KBTVs new 800 ft tower (instead of going on KIOC's antenna where it was originally planned to move but either the 106.1 antenna would not handle KKMY or CC did not want KIOC off for the length of time needed to upgrade the antenna and line if that was the case), the K277AG translator was not needed....but CC kept it anyway and had it carry the HD-2 signal of 104.5..
The FCC allows such to take place. Look at the 97.1 signal that E String is supposed to have on in Beaumont...(noone has heard it yet so I am wondering if it is on or has been built period)
KKMY is KISS style so I would call it more Rhythmic than anything....doesnt really matter what 103.3 does....it has no coverage to speak of.....when just a touch of tropo is in, it gets covered by KJOJ-FM.......even in visual sighting of the CC studio tower....waste of a frequency but CC gets to sell commercials....funny how KKMY is the only signal with HD...none of the other CC signals have it anymore from what I heard...guess they don't want to pay Ibiquity the fees for the other stations....but paying for KKMY just to have a 80w translator seems a waste of $$ to me.
102.5 will continue to hold high ratings but it does not bill as much as other signals in the market....
