Beasley Broadcast Group Sells 92.5, 96.5 to CBS radio, CBS sells 610 AM to Beasley

ThebigA- Yes I agree that it will make it more mainstream- but unknown bands being left to the crap signals of college stations is unfair. If Nicki Manaj gets to be on WSTW, WPST, Wired, Power 99, WJBR, WLEV, WBEB (More FM), WIOQ, Mix 106 and WPHI 107.9, then so should bands like Yuck, Grouper, Doug Gillard, The Ettes, Manic Impression, Television, and thousands more left to the totally unfair music market. The idea of not being mainstream is rad, but they want exposure as well. So if making 92.5 a station that plays the latter 70's underground punk/new wave bands and all the other indie bands from then up to today and throw in some EDM/ trip-hop stuff, I would bet that the station would do at least decent. Radio is a business, but it's the business of broadcasting the art, ART, of music. If there are 9 Top-40 stations in the market, there should be at least one Indie/ Rock station that has the same coverage area as the top 40's do. I applaud WKDU 91.7 for its format and playlists, but its coverage area is poor. It' gets out to maybe 10 miles from the transmitter. So why not take a shot at something like this?

By the way- I highly, highly suggest WIP 610 go to a WQLL format. It'd do better than the CBS sports format, that's for sure.

They're getting exposure. You want them to become popular, and that means making them mainstream, which ruins their music and their underground image. The artists themselves control this, not radio. There's a reason they don't visit radio stations or collaborate with them in special shows and concerts, and it's because the artists CHOOSE to remain small and unknown, except to their fans. I've worked with artists in smaller niche formats like bluegrass, jazz, and Americana. It takes time, effort, and some money to go from unknown to mainstream, and not all artists want to go down that path.

Yeah you're right. It's just a shame though, you know? I can easily hear WKDU so I'm good. But I feel bad for these amazingly talented and creative artists who remain still unknown. Nonetheless, that unknowness (if that's a word) adds to the reason they're so good haha. Oh well, guess the commercial FM will remain dry.

Don't. They're very happy, and they've built their economy on their current fan base. As long as that base continues to support them, they'll be able to live off their music.

Exactly. There are arena acts that get absolutely no radio play. Radio isn't the place where "indie" acts break anymore. At least not big commercial ignals in big cities.

"KYW moving to 96.5"....."Wired going away"......Your all telling me, that with CBS Radio going head to head with IHeart Media in the CHR format in almost every other Top 10 market (and quite honestly, KVIL in Dallas comes very close to being KISS-FM like), blowing up formats in Boston, and San Diego in favor of "AMP" and "Energy" brands.....they are just going to throw away the chance to do the same thing in Philly, and let IHeart have the pure CHR format and audience all to themselvs, just so they can simulcast an already high rated All-News station on FM????
Country Music Radio is also something CBS Radio does very well. They have lots of ties to CMA. The purchase of these two stations just gives them a better hold in the market music radio wise and a better chance to chip away at the competition.

There's a better chance (slim) of AAA getting play in this market than underground or anything of the sort.

KYW going to FM will not help them dramatically. The product is bland (I'm being nice in saying that) at this point. If they tighten it back up to something that is a respectful news outfit, perhaps their ratings will improve. Wired may be the best urban/top 40/rhythmic station out of the four (Power, Q, and Hot) at this point. It's not great but for a top ten market it's a decent station.

I feel Wired will stay with possibly a few changes. You take away Wired then watch Qs ratings go up.

As for xtu stays as is with country.

You guys have to know Wired's days are numbered, right? I mean really, deep down in your soul. It's a goner, guys.

I'm curious to find out what's going to happen with the local play by play on 610 AM of the Eagles, Villanova and Saint Joseph's games? Will the existing CBS radio stations in town might wind up airing all of those games, if they are kicked off of 610 AM?

Monday, December 1 has been the projected date for the deal to close which CBS will add Beasley’s 92.5 and 96.5 FM and CBS selling 610 AM to Beasley. According to a report. , Beasley has applied for the WTEL calls for the 610 AM frequency , while CBS will keep the WIP brand and call letters . Question is what will happen to CBS Sports Radio? Will it move to another radio station or will it be off of Philly radio for good?

On a WIP-FM subchannel? On the subchannel that KYW uses when the FM simulcast is moved to 96.5?

I don't think they will be happy about that. I think they want it to be heard on the radio.

If that were a paramount concern, "they" would not have packaged 610 in the transaction.

I

Sports at least has shown some strength with a more desirable demographic. No one is saying the national network will rival the local. But sold in tandem, it would be an easier sell than trying to sell the 85-to-dead audience for the current 1210.
I think that if CBS flips 1210 WPHT-AM back to sports someday, it would be more successful, in terms or revenue, than talk. Sports formats I think make more money than the conservative political talk format. Why keep a failing talk format that's going to die soon, instead of switching to a format, like sports, that's going to last forever, if its programmed the right way.

Julius, Julius, Julius. WIP makes more money than right-wing talk. It did on AM and it does on FM. Maybe WPEN does, too. But that's not going to happen with yet another syndicated, turn-key sports talk outlet on AM. It didn't on 610. It didn't on 950. And why would CBS spend money to do another local-live sports talk station where the best they can hope for is to cannibalize WIP? There are only so many people in town who want to listen to sports talk. Add another station and all you do is end up having the same pie with more slices.

Is that why GM doesn't do live and local in the mornings on WPEN? Are they afraid that they would take listeners away from Preston & Steve or John DeBella?
