Rush To Be AM Only in Kansas City in New Year

Entercom-owned KMBZ Kansas City is splitting its AM-FM simulcast on January 5th. 980 KMBZ, a 5000 watt AM signal, will become the home of Rush, Hannity, Beck, Herman Cain and Laura Ingraham. 98.1 KMBZ-FM, a full power FM signal, will go with all local hosts all day, only keeping Ground Zero and Coast to Coast late nights.

It had been a trend for AM Talk stations to add an FM simulcast, or go FM only, to catch younger listeners. But in the last few years that trend has been reversed. iHeart gave up Talk simulcasts in San Diego, Tuscon and recently Columbia SC to put music formats on those FM stations. iHeart also flipped its Sports and Talk stations in Minneapolis, moving Sports to an FM signal from AM and moving Talk to AM from FM. Greater Media gave up an FM Talk station in Boston to go Urban AC.

But Entercom is still committed to Talk on 98.1, as long as it's Local Talk. So it will be interesting to see how a Talk station on FM in KC does, with all local hosts from 5am to 9pm. And Rush fans will have to find him on a 5000 watt AM signal instead of a 100,000 watt FM signal.

I predict the majority of the audience will stay with the FM. It'll be interesting to see if any of the syndicated hosts jump to KCMO.

My guess is that they won't do any better on FM if it's just the same ideological garbage only with local voices. When will radio execs learn?

Well, they'd been finding him on that AM signal for a couple decades, so....

Of course there are less and less and less of those type listeners every year, which begs the question: Why didn't talkradio plan ahead? Instead of becoming more personality-oriented, they became more mono-thematically ideological. Utter folly.

Clear Channel split the 95.7 and 600 simulcast here in Cedar Rapids about a year ago. Keeping talk only on 600 WMT. My understanding is that hardly anyone listened to the FM signal. I'm not sure these simulcasts really make sense except for maybe in really large cities where AM interference is a real problem. The majority of people in this area that are interested in talk radio have no problem listening to it on AM. The ones that don't like AM can stream it.

How long do you suppose Rush will continue doing radio?

I hadn't heard him in quite a long time but I tuned in by accident today and at first I honestly thought it was a substitute host. Rush used to have a resonant, relaxed voice. Now he sounds strained and strident. I'm guessing it's related to his hearing, and natural aging.

His voice along with the rabid us vs. them ranting make him very unpleasant to listen to. He's out of favor with the new thinking about more local and lifestyle talk. He certainly doesn't need the money and this change looks like more handwriting on the wall.

Rush's retirement would profoundly change the talk radio landscape.

When?

When he's no longer physically able. And deafness didn't stop him, so my guess would be another 15 years at least.

Judging from online demos, hearing with a cochlear implant is like listening to the world through a single, very tinny earpiece.

At first Rush (remarkably) was able to apparently "remember" what his voice sounded like (also his hearing loss occurred gradually so he had some time to adjust) so that he was able to carry on. But as the years pass he's becoming pretty far removed from that. The way Rush sounds today, if he was an unknown I'm frankly not sure anyone would hire him.

Rush's star is declining -- there's no question about that -- it's just a question of when it drops below the horizon. Bruce Williams is still doing a podcast.

Rush sounds "tinny" now. And I think Bruce gave up his podcast a year or so ago. Almost had a gig producing for him when he first started the podcast. Probably good I didn't get that one...
