WMCA Promo-Format Change

WMCA is now airing a promo that on Monday January 19 they will be No More…”Find out What we will become” on Monday January 19.

WOW, my guess would be a flip with WNYM ... something I've been suggesting for a long time.

They'd gain a decent signal for the talk programming so it would become competitive in the tri-state area, and WMCA does have a talk radio legacy.

As for the padres, where else they gonna go? Salem would have to reduce their brokered rate, so how it works out economically depends on the potential for selling the talk programming on 570. It's surprising to me that they're able to get the sponsors they already have on the puny 970 signal.

I hope that's what happens. More power to them! (So to speak.)

I'm thinking they are changing formats is because there will be a new religious station on 1560 AM Family Radio. Could we possibly see the return of Good Guys Radio Oldies for New York City. WCBS-FM is no longer a Oldies station playing more 80s now. This would be a good move for WMCA.

I don't see music happening on AM radio in 2015 for a variety of reasons including the antiquated technology and the difficulty in trying to sell a very narrow niche to advertisers. Top 40 is no longer the more-or-less universal format it once was. Musical tastes are all over the place and are best satisfied online.

So if my wish comes true and WMCA flips to WNYM's mainstream talk, here's more of my wishlist:

- Convince John Gambling to do mornings 6-9 am to replace the narcissist who's currently in that slot. Since Gambling now works from home I can't imagine why he wouldn't rather have most of his day free. He could get up at 5 am instead of 2 as he probably did when he had to commute to WOR, he'd have the prestige and bigger audience of the morning slot and could command some premium ad revenue -- and NYC would once again have a definitive AM Drive show! Right now there's no competition.

- Replace Steve Deace (Limbaugh without the pipes) with Jerry Doyle who, IMO, does the most entertaining syndicated radio talk show currently available.

- Bring back Jon Grayson whose Overnight America show is fast-paced, fun and entertaining (as opposed to the psychobabble currently in that time slot.)

- Leave the Lutheran Hour on WNYM to give Frank Morano a full uninterrupted show from 4 am to 9 am on Sundays. Even better, give Frank Saturday and Sunday mornings from 6 am to 9 am for continuity with the Gamblling morning show.

Come on, Phil Boyce ... I suspect you're on the right track ... make this a home run!

try to Convince Gambling to do am--drive on 570 by paying him more. And----
allow him to do the show from home some of the time .
570 could also air some other local talk hosts. Imagine WMCA''
beating WABC & WOR in the ratings. Would not be hard to do.

two conflicting rumors---- WMCA may change on Jan. 19 or on Jan. 30 .

From Good Guys to God Guys to...?
Who knows maybe a swap w 970...

Speaking of "padres" I recall a promo Catholic cable network EWTN did. Maybe people were mixing them up with ESPN
so they joked "You won't find sports on EWTN. But you will find the Cardinals and the padres..."

well i filed an age discrimination complaint against them for a paid intern for the Joe Piscopo show....I wonder if the NYC human rights commission will get serious on it..........I really did want to get back in radio and Piscopo seems like a no brainier....

Instead they hired people with no experience, and their excuse was I was one day late in applying.....and the air head chickypoo was screening the resumes.

also i would love to work with Lisa Wexler met her when i was booking guests and producing a radio show on WNLK norwak CT, for a brokered host.

but it would be foolish to give up the WMCA call letters on 570 .

If you want to work in radio again, try not filing complaints against people who don't hire you then bragging about it online. With your real name.

We have a brief update for you:

Phil Boyce, SVP/Spoken Word Format and Salem Radio Network Operations VP, New York responded to a Radio Ink inquiry regarding the on-air promo, "Its a bit of on air stunting."

I don't know...at 3:30 today i heard a live talk show onWMCA say its been 25 years WMCA's been a Christian station and we don't be here next Monday...Why would the WMCA host say that if they weren't changing format ?

Well, it's looking more doubtful, but it's still nice to speculate about WMCA becoming a news/talk station again.

I always liked WMCA better than its competitors, both as a music and a talk station. It seemed more "home grown" -- less slick and more authentic. It was a petri dish for some great talent who eventually wound up at WABC or in syndication or elsewhere -- HOA, Harry Harrison, Bruce Williams, Sally Jesse Raphael.

I know call letters and frequency don't mean much these days when it comes to content -- you have to grab it wherever you can find it, and that could just as well be some Internet stream.

But it would be really cool to listen to "WMCA, New York" once again. Even just for old time's sake.

Does it really matter wrong is wrong......they bill themselves as an intelligent talk radio station so how come i couldn't find anyone intelligent to talk to ????

they have the 2 lowest rated stations in new york city
