It's 2015! Time to get rid of the '70s.

Your post is well said and I can agree to what you've written.

What I'm disgusted at, is the fact the pros are knocking the smaller market radio stations and internet streams as basically inferior to their highly rated "big city" world of broadcasting and methods. There are countless small market stations, AM's and internet radio stations, yes some with low ratings, working their butts off, trying to please their audiences and music enthusiasts the best ways possible and all I hear is: "they won't last, they're at a 0.0, they only have ten listeners, their format will change, their days are numbered, they play music that are trainwrecks." Always criticism.

I realize the pros have a job to do in their markets, but when we bring up comparisons with other and better smaller stations that suits our needs, we feel like they are not getting the recognition they deserve as well. They are some really darn good stations and internet streams out there and by hard working folks......and they think they're right too!

Hmm. David, KM and TheBigA can correct me if I am wrong...

I doubt they are knocking what is working for those owners or Internet stations... BUT are saying that placed in a different market would not serve the owner's best interest.

There is also just a natural desire to be competitive... inside the walls of one station competing against another you will hear such things: "they suck", "they won't last", "haha look at their numbers this book"... it's human nature. The pros are doing what they do: they have to be competitive. And they fall back on their experience to give reasons why they think such things.

Major sports athletes regularly talk smack about their counterparts and the teams they compete against.. it's a mindset to "stay in the game", "to win". Then they get traded to the very team they trash talked! : ) It's just competition and business... nothing personal.

For some people, doing radio "right" means being creative, and playing a larger variety. Neither is really more "right" than the other.. it just depends on what the MAIN objective is and for most radio station owners, the ultimate objective is to make the most money possible

What I've bolded for you, makes perfect sense. Making money is the ultimate goal of owning a radio station and there are so, so many ways to accomplish that, whether you live in Philadelphia or in a small town in Tennessee. They should ALL be acknowledged on what they do, for their audiences. We will never change big city radio, I've accepted that long ago. But smaller markets are doing an outstanding job as well for their listeners and music fans alike, whether they rate an 0.0 or an 8.0 in Colorado.

It may be business to them but to a fan of such music it's personal.

It's personal, because we grew up with those great hits of the past. I grew up in the late 70's to mid 80's, a wonderful time for music on top 40 terrestrial stations. But to only hear 10% of them today (whether on classic hits or on AC stations).....does not sit well, but unfortunately that the way it is. Frankly, it sucks!

When I hear a station like this: http://www.softrockradio.net/softrockradiolove.html, it reminds me of what I would hear my parents and other older family members were playing in the house or the car, in the 80's and 90's growing as a child. Now that I'm a parent of a young kid, I'm introducing my child to such music, helping to keep it going from one generation to another.

Imagine how the Big Band era listeners felt when Rock took over... it is generational and cyclical.

Think about it... Big Band and Standards had control from the 1930s to the 1960s. Then (classic) Rock had a good 30 years (1960-1990). I would say from 1990-2000 there was a lot of experimentation trying to create some long term viable formats such as 80s, 90's, Hot AC, Active Rock, Country Rock. Now commercially speaking, Hip Hop is middle aged (if you consider it took off in popularity around 2000ish)...

Maybe because it's uptempo, perhaps?
Aside from a screaming guitar, it seems too sleepy.

I even heard it on the Music of Your Life standards format back in whatever you call the first decade of this century, before that format went too extreme just before Jones decided to do another one. It seemed out of place there, to me.

I've encountered the opposite online. Several slow songs, then something a little more bouncy comes on. Personally, I think the handful of bouncier ones help freshen up the mix a bit.

Played @ Song Title
16:47:26 Kenny Loggins - Forever
16:43:25 Glee Cast - Pretending
16:41:06 Peter & Gordon - I Go to Pieces
16:35:53 Stevie Wonder - That Girl
16:31:16 The Carpenters - Solitaire
16:26:34 Taylor Dayne - Love Will Lead You Back
16:22:21 Gary Wright - Really Want to Know You
16:18:03 Whitney Houston with Jermaine Jackson - If You Say My Eyes Are Beautiful
16:13:42 Daughtry - Waiting for Superman
16:11:13 Gerry & The Pacemakers - Ferry Cross the Mersey
16:07:39 Matt Cardle - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
16:02:58 Billy Joel - My Life
15:59:34 Ronnie Milsap - Only One Love In My Life
15:53:00 Bryan Adams - (Everything I Do) I Do It for You
15:48:22 Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway - The Closer I Get to You
15:44:45 Kim Carnes - Bette Davis Eyes
15:40:38 One Direction - Story of My Life
15:38:00 The Temptations - The Way You Do the Things You Do
I'm not sure what your goal is here. This is totally different from an AC on actual radio in 2015. Anyway, I would only find the following songs acceptable out of that list (I don't actually know "Solitaire" but it's by The Carpenters so it must be all right)

16:41:06 Peter & Gordon - I Go to Pieces
16:35:53 Stevie Wonder - That Girl
16:31:16 The Carpenters - Solitaire
16:11:13 Gerry & The Pacemakers - Ferry Cross the Mersey
16:07:39 Matt Cardle - The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face
16:02:58 Billy Joel - My Life
15:59:34 Ronnie Milsap - Only One Love In My Life
15:48:22 Roberta Flack & Donny Hathaway - The Closer I Get to You
15:38:00 The Temptations - The Way You Do the Things You Do

And I'm only guesing about Matt Cardle. I like the Roberta Flack version.

Another one they got from AMFM, WMAG, didn't change immediately in 1999 either. They continued playing soft hits until 2005 or 2006. Change-up in music selections was also after the Christmas flip.

I wouldn't have been as mad at the change if it had been gradually instead of suddenly.
Different definition of soft. It amazed me when WIST changed around that time when one letter to the editor said "There are other easy listening stations in the area". REALLY? That's like saying WIST didn't need to be country because there were already country stations. WIST was actually the only good country station. When they changed to Spanish I discovered WBRF was a good country station at least during middays. Now it's mornings and early afternoons too.

Although in parts of High Point WSAT can be heard until close to sunset, and it's as good as the old WIST if not better.

And getting back to WMAG, I was REALLY surprised when someone complained WMAG wasn't soft any more. I don't remember the date when that happened, but I was thinking WMAG hadn't been soft for a good long time.

The goal of the station is to appeal to people who want to hear their soft pop/rock 70's, 80's, and 90's faves in a soft pop/rock setting instead of in a classic hits setting or a standards setting.

So the problem is?

You yourself have said that there are multiple streams available to satisfy your desires. So you can happily stream them.

But don't ask commercial radio to also satisfy you; we can't make money from formats that have no advertiser appeal.

That way you are happy, and so are we.

So you're saying it's a gold-based AC?

Yes, the station leans toward gold-based hits and includes a small group of conservative, current hits. Because these stations are becoming harder to find OTA, web stations like that one are helping to fill a void.

"Solitaire" is the only Carpenters single that isn't on my double disc collection. I was thinking it was top five but I show it peaking at #17 and #1 AC. If you like The Carpenters, you'll love this and here it is, through the magic of YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tgfBabA1_U

Yes, it's a cover of her version. He was a contestant on the UK version of X-Factor. Several of the current hits played on the station are by contestants from such shows, which has gotten me geeking out.

I'm sorry about the double post. When I hit "enter", I got a pop-up asking if I was sure I wanted to leave the page. I tried both yes and no and tried hitting it again, only to find that it had posted twice. When I went back to delete the second post, I got another pop-up, saying I wasn't authorized to do so!
