103.1 sold to JVC Broadcasting

With the announcement of Shadow Stevens coming on board, it looks like they are going Country.

Unless Shadow was hired on to do afternoons on an EDM Format, LOL!!!

Classic Country is my guess.

Perhaps a format similar to what WPCV has. A large playlist of new and old country, not just the same 200 songs from the past 10 years. Here's another idea that the monopoly's have forgotten about, live and local day and night. I'm just saying, IMHO if you want to go up against a heritage station, you have to be different and give the listeners something they don't have here.

It looks like they will go with Country after all. The website and accounts for "103.1 The Wolf" just became active as I am posting this in preparation for its December 18 (2014) launch.

Just heard the launch of WOTW The Wolf. Not much of a launch, but Country hits and throwbacks? Forgive my ignorance, but isn’t throwbacks really an urban station saying. WCFB uses that. I don’t think WWKA has much to worry about.

Nothing really special. Sounds like every other country station in the world.

While "throwbacks" normally isn't associated with country music, I see no reason it should only be confined to urban formats. With the popularity of social media, I suspect most everyone knows what a "throwback" is (my almost 68 year old mother has even done a "Throwback Thursday" pic on Facebook, and she's the last one to know almost everything!), and country is no longer a format that just appeals to out of touch hicks.

Wow - really splitting the demographics up on this. Bubba (the world is against me) LoveSpunge has never been able to conquer this market, so if with a weak signal he grabs 20% of the Monsters and JRR (men 25-54) he'd still be bottom of the totem poll. Seems to me Jon Boy and Billy making a comeback to O'town + NewCountry/Throwback would grab more of the 30+ market male and female as a reasonable approach, because for the moment I don't see how they'll have a single person in their 20's listening. Shadow was "cool" 30 years ago at Y106, not sure he's a young person icon (I like him, great mid-day guys but not a ratings grabber) . Option 2 would be bring back Doc to mornings, don't you think? Just my opinion - for the moment.

Throwbacks hasnt been used in country radio before.. but they're probably trying to attract a younger audience and that audience will know what throwbacks is/means.. and its less negative sounding then "classic country".. that's viewed as old people stuff.throwbacks doesnt have such an "old" connotation to it.

Anyways, the station sounded pretty good when I listened and they are giving away tshirts like candy the last few days.

WPCV and 103.1 are relatively the same musically.. I havent taken detailed notes, but overall, the music sounds similar.. WPCV has nothing to worry about from 103.1....

WHo has to prove themselves here? 103.1!

WPCV is concentrating solely on Polk County and is not targeting Metro Orlando. In fact WPCV hardly makes any showing in the Orlando PPM, so 103.1 has nothing to be overly concerned about in terms of competition from WPCV. And considering 103.1 does not have a marketable signal in the Lakeland-Winter Haven market, WPCV has nothing to be concerned about from 103.1 in Polk County. The new WOTW's direct competitor is WWKA.

Country is trending very high as a format on Nielsens right now, and WWKA is one of the stations enjoying that right now. If properly executed, this could be a very good format for the 103.1 slot in Orlando.

I think That 103.1 will be just fine picking up the scraps of WWKA.

I'm pretty sure they know they won't beat WWKA, and are just looking for a piece of that pie, not the whole thing.

They seem to be doing just fine up in Gainesville/Ocala as the Number 3 to WOGK and WRUF.

The money in Country is huge, and being Number 2 will definitely bring in a ton of revenue fast.

I like the sound of the station so far. My only criticism is that it is too heavy on the same current hits. However, they have done a great job with the variety on the "throwbacks."

I'm not a huge country fan but I definitely enjoy 103.1. I grew up on the 90s and late 80s country and I love when they play it. 92.3 has not touched that stuff in years.
