Record Overnights for ‘Super Bowl XLIX’

Super Bowl XLIX metered market (overnight) rating highlights according to NBC Sports:

-The Patriots’ 28-24 win over the Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX on NBC delivered the highest overnight rating in Super Bowl history, with 49.7 rating/72 share in households.
-NBC’s Super Bowl XLIX overnight topped a 50 rating in each half hour from 8 p.m. ET forward (peaking at a 52.9/73 from 10-10:15 p.m. ET).
-Comparably, NBC’s Super Bowl XLIX overnight is up by four percent from last year (47.6/70), and up by three percent from the prior record (48.1/71 for Ravens-49ers in Feb. 2013)

Lead-Out “The Blacklist”

-NBC’s special post-Super Bowl telecast of “The Blacklist” averaged a record 13.5 rating/24 share in metered-market households, making it the top-rated post-Super Bowl entertainment telecast in three years.
-Comparably, this 13.5 overnight rating makes “The Blacklist” the top primetime entertainment telecast since the Oscars (27.7/42 on March 2, 2014) in the metered-market households.
-“The Blacklist” was nine percent above the year-ago post-Super Bowl edition of “The New Girl” on Fox (12.4/21 on Feb. 2, 2014).
-Versus two years ago, “The Blacklist” is up +13 percent, with the 13.5 rating topping a 12.0 for CBS’s “Elementary” on Feb. 3, 2013.
-The last post-Super Bowl entertainment telecast to rate higher was NBC’s Feb. 5, 2012 edition of “The Voice” (which scored a 20.0/30).

And the final numbers are in:

114.4 million of us made Super Bowl XLIX now the most-watched program in television history!!!!!

CBS will have Super Bowl 50 next year, and the battle is on as to who will have that coveted post-game slot. I'm guessing a "Mom"/"Big Bang Theory" crossover episode, since Chuck Lorre produces both shows.

With CBS, the odds favor a drama or reality show airing after the Super Bowl. CBS hasn't used the post-game slot for a comedy since 1978, when All in the Family aired following the first ever Super Bowl played in prime time.

Plus, they typically want to spotlight a newer show that they are trying to get people to watch. Big Bang Theory already has great ratings, they don't need the help.

I think that the other folks who suggested that they'll use the time to push a new show that needs help are correct. I have to wonder if there will be some sort of controversy like "deflategate" in advance of Super Bowl L (and will they continue to use Roman numerals for 50?) to boost ratings. I'll admit, at the back of my mind I paid more attention to this Super Bowl than any other Super Bowl that didn't have the Steelers in it just to see if the Patriots would get caught cheating.

I believe the NFL has already announced that next year's game will be known as Super Bowl 50, I guess because 50 is such a big deal as an anniversary. 2017's game will be Super Bowl LI. I wonder where on Long Island it will be played.

This was already done on the People's Choice Awards.

I don't know, but will it turn out to be one L of a game?
