Lin Sue Cooney to leave 12 in May

Well this is not anything I expected to be hearing.


Lin Sue Cooney, who has been with KPNX for 30 years, is leaving to join the executive team at Hospice of the Valley. It was announced today, and it's no joke.


As you might expect, she remains through May sweeps.

...And why do you announce this on April Fool's Day?
 
You would have to think that she has a hefty salary and there may have been pressure from Gannett which led to her decision to find somewhere else to work.

Would not be surprised to see a few more long timers doing a similar move in the future.
 
This sounds very similar to Jean Enersen at KING-tv in Seattle. Jean Enersen was one of the longest serving female evening anchors (1972-2014) in the country. Not long after Gannett purchased Belo, it was announced that Jean "would be stepping away from the anchor desk". It was clearly Gannett not wanting to pay Enersen's large salary.

I'm sure it's the same here with Lin Sue. Will Faye or Tram take over for Lin Sue? With the departure of Kim Covington, 12 doesn't have a huge bench of talent.

Note to self: Phoenix NBC affiliate KPNX is reported
to have or possibly had talent. 30 years was far too
long to have anyone at an anchor desk........

*I think Tram Mai would be a good replacement for Lin Sue Cooney. Faye is also a good choice, but she does well on 12 News Today in the mornings.
 
Now that Lin Sue is leaving, who is the longest tenured primetime newscaster for the Phoenix top 5 networks?

When I moved to AZ in 2000, Hook & Lake were on Fox10 and continue to partner together.

Mark Curtis has anchored with Lin Sue since 1995...
 
Hmmm....

I thought Curtis left and then came back to the station after I moved here. I thought he did something else for a year or two then came back to 12News as the sports guy with big fanfare. Kent Dana moved to CBS5 and Curtis took over as anchor.

You are correct. He did sports for a long time and didn't replace Kent Dana until about 2004. His bio doesn't say when he joined Lin Sue, just that it "wasn't long".

Slight difference here Mr. Formeraa...

As noted at the time on the Seattle board, Jean Enerson was working about 50% of her newscasts. They were paying her a ton of money to anchor the 5 and 6:30 news about half the time. While Belo tolerated that, I felt it was no surprise that Gannett pushed her out. If she wanted to keep her position, she should have been at the desk more often.

Lin Sue, on the other hand, works a normal schedule.

However, none of the anchor teams, at any of the stations (except, maybe Hook and Lake), are as good as what we see at KING or KOMO in Seattle (even after the recent changes).

Of course, we know that Jean only worked on the 5pm and 6:30pm newscasts Monday through Thursday (except possibly during the sweeps periods) and had done the same for at 15 years or so. To be fair, Jean also had the Healthlink franchise. So, despite being in her late 60's, Jean was working quite a few hours each day. In terms of hours of newscasts, that comes close to the same numbers of hours as Lin Sue here in Phoenix, since 12 News airs 30 newscasts.

That said, it was probably time for Jean to retire and it's probably time for Lin Sue to go as well (although I will miss her on the news). I'm sure Lin Sue will do well at Hospice of the Valley.

Who do we think will take over for Lin Sue?

Any word yet as to who will be taking Lin Sue's place? I haven't heard a thing. Not that they would ever listen to me but if I was in charge at 12 I would move the morning anchors (Faye and Doug) to the prime evening newscasts. They seem to work well as a team. 12's mornings would then be right there with all the other stations that are revamping their mornings. Just a thought. 12 certainly could use a resurgence of some kind. It is not what it used to be.

I don't know that Faye would want to move to evenings. She is married to KTVK Sports Anchor Tim Ring and has three children at home. So while she works early mornings, he it there to take care of the children and vice versa at night.

Note to self: They have television stations in Seattle now and they even
broadcast news.........
 
It appears that on 5/18, KPNX listed a job posting on LinkedIn for an Anchor-Reporter Weekday Evenings. They are looking for "Three to five years’ experience as a host or anchor on a news or entertainment program at a network, in syndication or produced by a local station in a major or larger medium market. No beginners please..."

But couldn't that be for Tram Mai's current position as well? Host of EVB Live and reporter/newsroom anchor for evening newscasts???
