KHAK- Today's Best Country--- Says who Exactly?

I'm curious if anyone else is unhappy with the way KHAK has progressed since the Town Square takeover? I find KHAK in its current state, unlistenable. Their music selection is extremely limited. Virtually zero songs from the 90's or before. They play new country but not truly "new" country. Music from undiscovered artists (independent or newly signed major) is again virtually non-existent. Though they have traditionally not been friendly to new artists. I have never been a fan of KKSY. But I find even they have a better variety than KHAK. And KKSY is nearly entirely syndicated and centered around new country.

KHAK may still be getting decent ratings but I'd argue that is primarily because they have so little competition. In Cedar Rapids/ Iowa City, their only competition for country is literally KKSY who is just barely trying. If we had a station in the market with decent variety, I don't doubt that KHAK would be hurting. I have asked a large number of people over the last couple weeks about their opinions of KHAK. Very few were favorable.

I took a look at their playlist, and I actually saw a few new artists from independent labels. Have you heard of Kelsea Ballerini? She's on the Black River label. That's a very small label. She's in their Top 20. Take a look:

I see several other names most people wouldn't recognize, like Michael Ray. There's a new band in the Top 10 called A Thousand Horses. How about Canaan Smith? Ever hear of him? Why does something have to be unfamiliar to be good? What's wrong with playing popular music? That's probably what they mean by Today's Best Country. It's the music people most want to hear.

Most current country station aim primarily at women in their 30s. If "the large number of people" you've spoken with aren't mainly women in their 30s, it's no surprise they don't care for it. Then again, no one's forcing them, or anyone, to listen.
