Goodbye to KNSJ (Social Justice Radio) 89.1?

Twice in the past week I've heard rumors from two persons "in the know" that KNSJ 89.1 FM Descanso, a radio service of Activist San Diego could very well be going off the air soon........

I have no idea if what you heard may be correct but I do know some LPFM operators that operate stations that would be similar. In almost every instance the money is there to get it rolling but continuing donations are rare leading operators to self fund. Most cannot do that too long. It seems the excitement is in getting the station going but not so much about keeping it rolling. While I'm not in the market and might not find the station my preference, let's hope it is not so. Never good to see a station go silent.

KNSJ's annual anniversary fund-raising party, scheduled for July 11, (location TBA) has not taken place, that I know of.
Here's some info about the 'birth' of KNSJ in Descanso. The official 'studio' is a bedroom in El Cajon.
No info on their aborted Ramona station application. Transmitter location was a site in the east Palomar Range.-

1. This proposal provides first NCE service to 1306 persons, and second NCE
service to 8686 persons, including all or portions of the Guyapaipe, Capitan
Grande, and Viejas Indian Reservations.
2. Much of the coverage area is very isolated and has poor radio reception, that
would be mitigated by this proposal. The applicant will serve the needs of these
areas.
3. There are no other available NCE channels.

85% COMPLIANCE - THE COMPOSITE MEASURED ANTENNA PATTERN ENCOMPASSES AT LEAST 85% OF THE APPROVED PATTERN. SEE EXHIBIT 9A.

14. Group 319. This group consists of five applications proposing to serve three different
communities in California. Centro Palebra De Fe Church (“CPDF”) proposes service to Morena Village.
Horizon Christian Fellowship (“Horizon”), St. Paul Cultural Broadcasting, Inc. (“SPCB”) and Centro
Cristiano Cosecha Final (“CCCF”) each proposes to serve Pine Valley. Activist San Diego (“Activist”)
would serve Descanso. Horizon and Activist each claims that it is eligible for fair distribution
preferences. 22 The others do not. Accordingly, CPDF, SPCB, and CCCF are eliminated.
15. Activist asserts that it would provide a new first NCE service to 2,998 people and, therefore,
is entitled to a first NCE service preference. Horizon acknowledges that it is not eligible for such a
preference. Accordingly, Horizon is eliminated and Activist is the tentative selectee in Group 319.

See Horizon and Activist Applications, Questions III(1), III(2), and associated exhibits. Horizon’s 60 dBu
contour encompasses 2,474 people. Horizon claimed aggregated first and second NCE service to all 2,474 people.
Activist’s 60 dBu contour encompasses 10,550 people. Activist claimed aggregated first and second NCE service to
all 10,550 people. Thus, each would provide combined first and second NCE service to ten percent of the
population within its 60 dBu contour and to more than 2000 people.
Exhibit 6
Description: MAIN STUDIO LOCATION

THE MAIN STUDIO IS AT 1010 OLD CHASE AVE, SUITE B, EL CAJON, CA 92020-7739. THIS IS 19.8 MILES FROM DESCANSO, THE COMMUNITY OF LICENSE. IT THEREFORE QUALIFIES AS A VALID MAIN STUDIO LOCATION UNDER 47 CFR PART 73.1125(A)(3).

Group 319. IT IS FURTHER ORDERED, That the Application filed by Activist San
Diego (File No. BNPED-20071022AFB) is ACCEPTED FOR FILING and TENTATIVELY
SELECTED to be awarded a construction permit for a new NCE FM station in Descanso, California. If,
after a 30-day petition to deny period has run, there is no substantial and material question concerning the
grantability of the tentative selectee’s application, we intend, by public notice, TO DISMISS the mutually
exclusive applications of Horizon Christian Fellowship (File No. BNPED-20071018ALU), Centro
Palebra De Fe Church (File No. BNPED-20071018AUR), St. Paul Cultural Broadcasting, Inc. (File No.
BNPED-20071019BBJ), and Centro Cristiano Cosecha Final (File No. BNPED-20071022ABP)

If a tree falls in the forest...

Social Justice Radio. Now that sounds exciting. Joan Baez marathons? Gender neutral pronouns?

If they were in Los Angeles rather than San Diego, the Bus Riders Union would probably have a daily half-hour to rant about their perceived unfairness of rail over bus as the preferred transit mode. In the 20 years or so that they have been around, they have been proven wrong many more times than they were proven right, and the biggest laugh anyone gets is that they purport to represent "people of color" when white passengers make up the minority in ridership figures.

Maybe they can buy KNSJ and rail against (pun intended) the San Diego Trolley, Coaster, and the Breeze.
