'Jem and the Holograms' Trailer Trashed by Original Fans of Animated Series

The new trailer for “Jem and the Holograms” has sparked outrage on social media, as fans of the original animated series think it’s a pure “disappointment” and “nothing like the cartoon.”

Jon M. Chu‘s live action remake of popular 80s’ cartoon “Jem” was released on May 12. Since then, original “Jem” fanatics have ripped it to shreds on Twitter.

“You turned the story of a powerful woman CEO into a tween Hanna Montana knockoff,” one fan tweeted.

The remake, scheduled for release October 23, will be distributed by Universal Pictures.

22% at Rotten Tomatoes. Was anybody really clamoring for a live-action version of a campy, badly animated Mary Sue cartoon from the 80s?

First; none of which "Jem" (the TV programme) was. Does the word "Filmation" mean anything to you? Do a little bit of research before you begin labelling things that way.

Second, I saw the preview for this piece of generic angsty-teenager garbage and have zero plans to go see it. Movie remakes of TV cartoon shows almost always get it wrong. This is not a surprise; look at the rubbish those painful "Garfield" and "Yogi Bear" things predictably turned out to be. (My deepest condolances to anyone who had to sit through them. But then, there are people who thought the "Star Wars" prequels were good.) The movie is like these fake IMAX retrofit installations; "Jem" in name only.

I was a Jem boy. Okay, so sue me. KPTV is to blame for having corrupted my youth as such, due to its airing the reruns off and on during the 90s, by which point I had started paying attention. (Better late than never.) For a cartoon new-wave band's lead singer from half a generation prior, she was actually pretty hot. I was in approximately pre-K when the show ran originally; also over KPTV if I remember correctly.

There. I've said my bit.

The "official" rebuttal of the trailer: https://youtube.com/watch?v=TVQ9r3Smooo and don't say I didn't warn you.

I sat through an episode of "Jem" when it first aired and I stand by my comments. It was produced by Marvel, which was only marginally better than Filmation. The garish make-up on the girls and highly stilted dialogue qualifies it as campy, and the wish fulfillment of little girls to be a rock star qualifies it as a Mary Sue cartoon.
