K291CE....Um, what?

Goodbye 106-1...hello 97-3?!?! Huge decrease in coverage, butt up against KFNC. What's the pastor's mindset here? I can't believe they are moving this thing once more, and just when it looked like they had parked it for good...

...it hopped again.

...and this is the solution? Instead of having Big Dog to contend with, it'll now be sandwiched in between ESPN 97-5 & Country Legends.

Oy vey!

Purple looks like KIOC Big Dog 106 made an interference complaint see https://licensing.fcc.gov/cdbs/CDBS....jsp?appn=101717392&qnum=5120©num=1&exhcnum=2

The linked document is offline as I type this, but from reading it earlier it wasn't KIOC making a complaint, but rather the translator owner citing interference from KIOC.

This move would make no sense, although it does send a lobe at the heavily Asian areas of the market. The current 106.1 coverage is quite good, usually with no issues from KIOC in the translator's primary coverage area. And the linked document did not (IIRC) make any reference to the proposed facility's first adjacents on 97.1 and 97.5. I'm sure Cox and Gow would have something to say about that.

Wonder if Rehan Siddiqi is aware of this?

You bet they will! I have little faith that K291CE will ever light up on 247, but you never know.

Sure would put a temporary halt to any hoppin' that the other church may have been contemplating for the new Garwood facility...

Edit to add: I was wondering the same thing about Siddiqui. Sure threw a monkey wrench in his plan for Hum FM to cover the City with "a crystal clear signal in all of Houston". Wonder if he might have been working towards an outright purchase of the translator? If so, this latest development surely changes that.

The reality of it is none of these pea shooters is going to do well during tropo season. They will all get wiped out regularly by the co-channel C1s in Beaumont.

And 97.3 will get obliterated if Cox and Gow decide to crank their IBOC power.

K291CE has been on KGLK HD3 for about a month. Don't think anyone ever monitors or even listens to it because ever since the simulcast began on the HD3 channel it sounded kind of tinny and had gradually got worse. For a little over a week it sounds like a robot speaking gibberish. Can't understand a thing.

That was KGG68, our NOAA weather radio station from Tomball. 162.400 only runs 330 watts so it had been simulcast on 107-5 HD3. Me being me, I had sometimes wondered why KGG68 was chosen and not KHB40 from Galveston. I don't know how KGLK could ever pick up over the air, while KHB40 has good coverage of KGLK's transmit site. K291CE began using KGLK within the last month, according to reports here.

You know, I'm just thinking out loud here. Why does KHCB oppose K287BQ's sudden jumps from Freeport to Houston, yet nary a word when this one made its long journey from Simonton to the Galleria area? What's the difference in interference concerns for Houston Christian Broadcasters?

Guess someone over at Hum Tum or Cox read my post because the next day I checked KGLK HD3 and it was back to normal.

Well, yeah. He does tend to do that whilst meandering around these parts. Got to love having someone on scene, rage. The few times that there has been an issue somewhere in the Cox Houston cluster, someone inevitably posts it here and within a short time the necessary corrections are made. You may find yourself exasperated with how long they deem too long when running a format into the ground *cough the point cough*, but the Cox management takes great pride in their sound quality of the facilities here in Houston, and it shows. If you'll recall, they were the first to launch HD in this market on 107-5. They apparently spare no expense in keeping up with the times and keeping things sounding sharp.

They've been good with audio quality here in San Antonio also. All the extra HD signals just retransmit other AM/FMs, but still.

I knew that was coming, and would expect Cox's letter of opposition to be filed in the near term. It isn't going to fit on 97-3, obviously. About the only option I could see would be to move it northward and light up on 92-5. KCOL runs less power and has less height than KIOC, so maybe that's an option. Of course, it'd have to throw out some tight directionality to afford protection to KWUP Navasota, KROI Seabrook, and KNRG New Ulm.

Your idea is okay, Joe, but I have a better one. Send that thing back to Simonton where it started its journey. Should've never been granted a license to cover over here anyway.

They'd have to work around two future LPFMs on 92.5: KZCV in Baytown, and a yet-to-be-named station granted a CP for Northeast Harris County but seeking a move to the same tower as KPFT on the northwest side.
