Chicago Bears games on Monday night football

The Chicago Bears have two games scheduled this season for Monday night football, and they can't get any more games this season on Monday night football, and WCIU will simulcast both ESPN's broadcasts of the game. I don't know if that is really a good idea, as one I can't imagine too many homes without cable television. And two I can't imagine too many cable companies that don't have at least ESPN and ESPN 2 on their packages. Even if they don't offer the other ESPN channels, that would include ESPN News, ESPN Classic, and ESPN U. But does anybody know of any cable companies that don't offer ESPN channels at all? I can't imagine too many if at all that don't carry at least the main 2 channels. but the two games will be broadcasted on both coming from Solider Field in Chicago, which I don't know how often that the Chicago Bears have been the home team for both ESPN Monday night football games without having been the road team at least once, the two games will be this upcoming Monday nights vs Philadelphia Eagles, and also on Halloween night vs Minnesota Vikings. The broadcasters for both games will be the new play-ply-play man Sean McDonough teaming up with Jon Gruden

This is part of the deal ESPN made with the NFL. The game HAS to be made available on local channels in the home towns.

WLS-TV has the right of first refusal to carry the games, and they opted to keep their regular line-up.

Oh okay, but still I don't know why this deal had to be made as like I said I can't imagine any homes without cable tv or didn't have any of the ESPN channels. I would love to see a survey on how many people that do have cable tv that don't have any ESPN channels. I didn't know if it was the same thing for all teams that have games on Monday night football. But if they are going to do it just this, then shouldn't the games be blacked out on the ESPN main channel in both cities and surrounding suburbs like, TBS would do if they pick up a baseball game in the area that the baseball teams have their own local announcers call the games anyways, where they just black out the game in the two markets of the teams that are playing the game, like say if they picked up a Chicago Cubs or Chicago White Sox game on a Sunday afternoon where they will black it out in Chicago and I would also assume in the city that either team is playing.

From what I understand, it'll be aired in Chicago by WCIU-TV (IND) channel 26 and in Philadelphia by WPHL-TV (MY) channel 17.

In Philly, the ABC affiliate had right of first refusal, and passed. They will air Dancing With The Stars at its regular time.

Last week, for the LA/SF game, the LA ABC station chose to air the game, and run Dancing from the east coast feed, airing at 5PM.

I would imagine that ABC would want all their afflicates stations to carry their national programming, and even the programming that has airs in prime time so like if they scheduled a live reality tv series like Dancing with the Stars to air, they would want their afficates stations to air their programming instead of going to programming of their own choices like showing sports games of the local tv locally even if it is a simulcast of the football team in the city that is scheduled to play on Monday night football. Where with the reality tv series, I would think that they can air live on stations that are in eastern and central timezones, and on tape delay for timezones past central timezone.

Sure, but if the local station can make more money by airing the local football team for one game, they can do it, and just delay the network show to another time. It happens all the time. The problem is that Dancing With The Stars is one of ABC's most popular shows. So it's a tough choice for stations. The fact is that that football game will likely dominate the ratings that night, no matter which station it's on, and even if it's a simulcast of ESPN.

When the 49ers was playing the Rams at home on MNF, It was only on ESPN..It wasn't on any OTA Channels in the San Francisco Market or the Sacramento Market

Are you sure? KGO-TV's website told viewers they were doing the game:

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KGO) --
The San Francisco 49ers are kicking off their season against the Los Angeles Rams tonight at Levi's Stadium. It's a game you'll see on ABC7!

I don't know if that is really a good idea, as one I can't imagine too many homes without cable television.

You're kidding right?
People are getting rid of cable and satellite more and more everyday., I am one of them and have been for 3 years now. I've lived in a market with 11 total channels (including subs) and in another market that was very rural so I had 13 stations including 2 analog ones. I'm in Minneapolis now with over 50 stations.

There are also companies that are offering options without sports (Dish Flex pack, Fios)

oh and its in the contract between the NFL and the stations.

To maximize TV ratings, as well as to protect the NFL's ability to sell TV rights collectively, games televised on ESPN or the NFL Network are blacked out in each of the primary markets of both teams (the Green Bay Packers have two primary markets, Green Bay and Milwaukee, a remnant of when they played some home games in Milwaukee each season, see below) under syndicated exclusivity regulations as the league sells via broadcast syndication a package featuring that team's games.

As of July 2016 16% of Chicagoans are OTA only
Minneapolis is over 20%

By the way unless your ABC is o&o or owned by Hearst any station in your Market can pick up the rights to it. In O&O and Hearst markets if they get first refusal to carry it. If that is the case than any other station can get the rights.

As example last year and I think this year WCCO (CBS) Minneapolis has the rights to the Vikings 'cable' games.

The Rams vs 49ers game in week 1 aired on the ABC O & O's in Los Angeles and San Francisco. That was part of why Dancing With The Stars aired live there. As for Hearst, they own both ABC affiliates in the Boston/Worcester DMA (WCVB in Boston and WMUR in Manchester, NH). However, I think WBZ-TV (CBS) channel 4 of Boston handled the Patriots pre-season games.

They could get rid of it if they wanted to, but i don't see why anybody would want to get rid of cable in less they think the cost is too hire, and I am not kidding I don't know of anybody that has gotten cable, maybe you can subtract stations, or if you like having a lot of dvrs and recording programs you can jump back and forth between cable companies. But hey if you want to get rid of cable fine by me, it is your loss and not mine, so you should lose out if you can't watch any football games that are on ESPN that you would like to. I know the rest of the channels that air games are non cable stations those being CBS, FOX, and NBC.

Pre-Season rights are sold to whoever pays the rights in that market for them. And the thing is ANYBODY can buy the rights to games regardless of market. Thats why in Honolulu the stations there have rights to NINE teams. Some are geographical (Seattle, LA, Oakland, SF, SD), some are logical (Tennessee....for Mariotta) and some are odd (New England, Green Bay, Indy)

Also the Packers are shown in Alaska

There are plenty of people out there who dont have pay TV. And yes the price is too HIGH (not hire) because there isnt anything on there worth while. All these channels that play the same show over and over and over and over or hey lets take a show and put it on 3 of our channels we own. Yeah that will get people watching (rolleyes)

I have no clue what the hell you are talking about but I have 2 Tivos that work just fine

But hey if you want to get rid of cable fine by me, it is your loss and not mine,
Its not my loss. Its my GAIN....as in money in my pocket.

so you should lose out if you can't watch any football games that are on ESPN that you would like to.
Other than the Vikings I dont give two sh&ts about other NFL teams. As long as I can see the Vikes on local TV (which they all will be) I'm happy. Anything else is gravy. I wasnt sitting at home going "oh man I REALLY wanted to watch the 49ers and the Rams...boy I wish I had cable"

If you are referring to college football....well there are "other" ways to watch it.

I know the rest of the channels that air games are non cable stations those being CBS, FOX, and NBC.
boy nothing gets by you, eh?

Lets put it this way. Even when I had satellite (it was included in my rent) other than a few shows on A&E and wrestling the only thing I mainly watched was the local sports teams. I just don't see paying all that money (over $100) for a bunch of programs that are repeated all the time or just junk channels. I use to watch A&E and History channel. Well with a roku and the History or A&E app I can see new shows the next day after they are shown. No login needed (older episodes I would have to log in to my TV provider which obviously I cant). Otherwise shows that I watched got boring and the shows were more about how stupid people can act than the actual show was about.

and by the way....games being simulcast in the local teams markets has been going on since the 90s...it aint going away
