Name one station in WNY that needs to be put out of its misery.

WBFO serves the African American community? David, I think you're confused. WBFO is the NPR outlet in Buffalo. "DandD" thinks that anything left of Rush is "fake news". And that Rush and the B&B boys on WBEN are reliable sources.

I think he's very confused. I was wondering what he was talking about. I guess the station that I picked doesn't fit his narrative of me. Of course I picked it more for the fact that it is a public station than it's content. Maybe he thought I meant WUFO which I listened to during the weekday afternoon and isn't half bad. Or maybe WBLK? That might be my second choice to put out of its misery, although I don't really care about that station. And my favorite "African American" (since David likes to categorize stations) station is WWWS which I listen to consistently.

Oh, so it's PUBLIC radio that's evil. I guess you're in favor of turning all the media over to big corporations, huh? They've done SUCH a good job at offering diverse points of view and avoiding having their content tainted by advertisers with deep pockets. Oh, just in case you didn't get it, that last remark was SARCASM.

Sorry, my bad. Dand is so annoying I forgot to fact check and got the "U" and the "B" mixed up, but the comment still stands in that he believes that anything he does not perfectly agree with wrong.

I think a fact check on conservative talk radio would fair much less well when compared with one on NPR stations.

since David likes to categorize stations

Stations "like" to categorize themselves. Alternative, classic rock, country, Urban, CHR, etc. Just as magazines categorize themselves as in "Field & Stream" and "Time" and "Good Housekeeping". Media offerings like these examples are tailored to specific audience segments and the sell accordingly.

NPR content offers plenty of diversity.
Content presented with intelligence, logic and truth.

It's no surprise that Dandy wants it off the air.
Logic and truth are offensive to him...

No, you're just commenting in a forum about stations you don't know. And not answering the original question.

Well it depends on the content or purpose. But in general, yes. Anything the government touches is a mess. I'd be in favor of a WPA997 (if that's even the call sign, you can't even really understand it). But the asterisk there is the fact that they switched from 1610 to 1630am, we bought new signs to plaster all over the thru way, and you still can't hear it clearly.

But why bother when WBEN can handle it so much better?

advertisers with deep pockets.

Yes, M&T's pockets as well as the other WBFO sponsors are pretty deep. They have to be for when they don't get their 7% fundraising goal.

Well then the correct category is Gospel Music, according to the Radio Locator. Ouch, I think that would actually be one that the WBFO listeners would want off the air, similar category to the Family Life stations.

The government in fact touches all radio stations, because the radio spectrum is a public resource, overseen by the government. So using your definition, all radio is a mess.

I know the stations and their formats quite well... going back decades to when Gordon McLendon made his foray into Buffalo on 1400.

As to eliminating a legally operating station in full compliance with the FCC rules, that should be the station owner's decision based on whether there is some segment of the audience that can be profitably served. Or, perhaps, even operated in Bob Bittner fashion as a listener supported private station. But the decision should not be made by self-appointed arbiters, the government or even the ratings.

Getting us back on topic, this thread is supposed to be about a station that "needs to be put out of its misery." That's not WBFO or and of the major stations in Buffalo, regardless of anyone's personal opinion about the station or format. There are loads of small AM stations in the area that are struggling to stay on the air, and that's more of what this thread is about. This was a 2007 thread that was revived for some reason.

WUFO picked the Nielsen description of "gospel" for its SIP form. However, there are several types of Gospel, including Black Gospel and Southern Gospel that are distinctly different in appeal. Nielsen does not allow for this distinction. In fact, the station self-describes for sales purposes as "Inspirational-Talk-News".

While radio-locator is a useful resource for ballpark coverage maps, it is not always accurate as a primary source for formats. No more than citing Wikipedia as the ultimate source of data should radio-locator be solely relied on for format information.

In any case, why would WBFO listeners care one way or another about WUFO? If they also listen to WUFO, then it may be that they like it. Otherwise, it is one of a couple of dozen or more stations they don't use but, likely, understand to each have their own particular audience. After all, Nielsen lists 27 commercial and 6 non-commercial stations as home to the market without including translators and LPFM stations so everyone has a certain element of choice.

As to Family Life, for those admittedly few listeners they may have, the station is of value. How is is the duty of the listeners of another station to judge the relevance or importance of another station.

Probably the only true criteria for pulling the plug on a station should be whether it is able to stay within the technical regulations of the FCC, maintains its facility according to "good engineering practices" and keeps to the established minimum operating schedule for its class of service. Those are the "emission check" basic standards and like a smoke-belching car in many states, if they can't meet them, get off the road.

You're complaining about the Thruway Authority's Highway Advisory Radio? Now, it's not "riveting", or political, but it serves a useful purpose when there are weather or traffic problems. It's also not intended to reach much beyond the Thruway itself. Next you'll be complaining about Buffalo-Niagara International Airport Radio on 1580, which helps travelers with parking and traffic information.

OTOH, non-stop traffic information on WBEN might be an improvement over non-stop conspiracy blather on some days.

Yes. No, not if you can't hear it. No, it doesn't even reach those on the Truway.

Waste of money.

For a long time network newsrooms weren't burdened with a quest for profit. That was left to the entertainment division. There was a good reason for this:

When your motive is only profit, what is supposed to be "news" turns into infotainment...which in the case of WBEN, turns into a circus sideshow where ratings are THE most important thing...and if you have to make things up to please your wingnut audience, then truth be damned.

NPR has integrity. WBEN is a sh*t show.
