WECK: All has been revealed...

Listening to a bit of WECK on Day 1 of the kinda sorta new format...and, TBH, most of the music here doesn't sound that different from when America's Best Music was supplying it.

But...did WECK actually pick up CBS Radio News? I could have SWORN I heard it in the 10am hour(during the same time, WBEN was using a report from ABC News in their top of hour newscast).

It didnt sound any different than what I heard a few weeks back when the momentum here began to build. I first checked the FM this morning, but there was too much interference, so I tuned to the AM band. WBEN and WGR sound OK on AM, but Music on AM sounds mushy to my ears, regardless of the era. It could be Air Supply, Bruno Mars, The Doors or 3 Doors Down, it doesn't matter, I'm used to hearing music on FM. So without prejudice, in a purely academic vein, what is the compelling reason for listeners of Star or WHTT (or WBEN AM) to switch to WECK on AM or FM. If the answer is, "the personalities," I can accept that only to an extent because Star and WHTT (WYRK and 97) have likeable personalities too. Rob on Star does a great job in the morning, same for Bill Lacy on WHTT. In any given hour, the personalities may talk maybe six to ten times, the remainder of the hour is given to music. If a listener doesn't like the music on WECK, he or she will scan to something else. The question is, will that listener go back to WECK to hear the personality? A reminder, I'm asking these questions objectively. Although it's not my cup of tea, I have no contention with the posters here who like the station. Its terrific that you have something you like. But please consider, there are so many more choices for listeners, consumers of entertainment, both listeners and viewers. It's 2017, not 1987. Thanks and have a good day.

You're absolutely right. And here in Buffalo there's a decent population of people who want a radio station like the ones in '87. Buddy sure thinks so otherwise he'd just keep WECK on the bird.

The FM sounds good in my car from the 290 on the north to Transit Rd. on the east and at least to the Lackawanna tolls on the south. That's pretty good coverage for a large segment of the available audience. I'm not sure it will penetrate buildings well, so at-work listening may suffer, although those folks may be listening on-line anyway. My sense is that WECK will serve the purpose that The Lake once did - the P2 or P3 station for when P1 stations are in endless commercial sets or simply playing something that's become a tune-out. They'll get noticed. How much more than that remains to be seen.

Rusty: To answer your question as to why someone would switch to WECK from Star, WHTT or WBEN....

Star: Maybe they don't want to hear Kiss Lite.
WHTT: Maybe they're kinda burned out by what they play. (Just as an example: I don't think WHTT would EVER play Route 66; WECK did in the time I was listening to it.)
WBEN: Maybe they're sick of partisan talk.

Understand that I completely get why you asked the question..and it needs to be asked. Myself, I have 12 FM presets on my car radio(some of 'em from Canada)and I CONSTANTLY change stations if I get bored by one of them.

Hey folks. Here's the deal. Focus on the AM only. The LPFM is a south towns only signal. Consider it a gift from the FCC. The AM station will have a 4.0 share 12 plus. Take it to the bank. The station currently has a 2.3 share 12 plus in April trend. The station is going to be an AM player. As far as the sound of music on AM, this IS 2017....which means listen online, or better yet, on blue tooth. It's kinda how TV evolved from the big tube and dial you had to turn to todays TV unit. Pretty simple stuff. If you don't like AM/FM/Tune In/ Blue-tooth/Streaming...then take the next step.....don't freakin listen to it. But you will, as the content is going to be great.

Today was a day one warm opening, Lots of kinks. I know exactly which ones they are. Trust me on the folks. 4.0 share 12 plus. By end of year.

Music on AM can be subjective. A lot of it has to do with the fidelity of your tuner and speakers, a lot has to do with what sounds you can actually hear, and a lot has to do with personal preferences. I'm one of those rare exceptions who will ALWAYS chose the AM side of a simulcast over the FM...simply because I get tired of turning the treble all the way down when listening to FM. I'm sensitive to sounds over a certain frequency, and do everything I can to block them out of my world. To me, some songs simply don't sound right on FM.

A "Buddy Shula Communications station"?

Pegging in the red on the schlock meter.

The little things can make a big difference in imaging. While some may say "hey, makes it sound more hometown and local!" Many others will say "no advantage to making yourself sound small-time".

No offense, Buddy, but there's no way anybody is going to listen to music on AM. Luckily I live and work in the FM signal area. I like what I hear so far. As for AM, I'll stick to torturing myself with WBEN on occasion. If you can get a decent news report then I'm yours. On FM, that is.

Fly: I don't think they can use its legal title on air(Radio One Buffalo LLC)for pretty obvious reasons.

And, yep, WECK IS using CBS News as their top of hour national newscast. I'll never understand why WBEN gave that up.

I've been listening on the way to work and back home coming up the 90 from Silver Creek and the FM is solid all the way to the Angola rest stop... so as Buddy says it is a Southtowns-favoring signal. And yes, building penetration will be an issue but consider that it's coming from the top of the former HSBC tower, so downtown gets the benefit of the strongest signal. Plus, there's always the internet stream...

Plus there is always Blue-tooth, plus, there is always AM Radio. It is ridiculous that people think no one listens to music on AM. Are you serious? Ever talk to anyone 60 plus? How do you think WECK has a 2.3 share? The FM? Nope.... I know otherwise. Again, trust me.

Mr. Shula has made it clear. WECK is aimed at 60 and over
listeners who use SIMPLE AM RADIOS.
When a WECK listener expires, their soul goes to
Radio Shack for new batteries.

The older population will enjoy the station and hopefully
it will be a viable business model...

You forgot about the Bluetooth and on-line components. Not all of us old people are technically challenged.

I didn't say they were. Buddy says the FM translator and other apps
are not that important. It's all about AM.
Bottom line is that the current format will only appeal to
Over 60 listeners no matter HOW they access it.
That audience will enjoy it...

Punched-in the station Wednesday morning around 7:30: CBS News followed by a local newscast and weather > Memories (Theme from Cats) -Barry Manilow > backsell into traffic phoner > brief weather > ticket giveaway solicit to Clint Holmes concert @ Riviera Theatre, North Tonawanda > commercial break, Northtown Auto; Dr. Bob Dental Implants > Nice to Be With You, Gallery > live liner for Harv Moor & Jon Summers "starting July 10th" > ticket winner congrats, no winner names mentioned > Living Inside Myself -Gino Vanelli.

Thursday, heard Where is the Love -Roberta Flack & Donnie Hathaway.

AM, FM, Bluetooth, streaming... whatever, wherever. It's all about appealing to John and Jane Publicowski. Twenty two radio geeks on a message board won't make or break this radio station. It's interesting. Is it a 4 share? Could be. Could be a 5. Could be a 3. Only Nielsen knows for sure.

You're going to have to pick up your game here, Buddy. I listened early in the week. Your PM news was a rehash of AM stories. I'll reserve total judgment until John Zak starts. But you're going to have to do a much better job if you think you're going to compete with WBEN and WBFO when it comes to local news. News is something you can't pretend at. Your newscasts need to be timely, accurate and credible if you want to be a player.

Coming from someone who spent 25 years in the business, at 58, I love Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake & the Chainsmokers as much as I love Where Is The Love, Living Inside Myself etc. I think Buddy will do well 45+ if he's playing music into the 80s etc. Nice to see LOCAL radio carving a niche.
