'Carol Burnett 50th Anniversary Special' Set on CBS

CBS will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the iconic Carol Burnett Show with a two-hour special set for December 3.

The Carol Burnett 50th Anniversary Special will film on Stage 33 at CBS Television City in Los Angeles, the show’s original soundstage. In it, Burnett will reminisce about her favorite sketches, Q&As with the studio audience, guest stars, her memorable wardrobe and bloopers, as well as the effect the show continues to have on television today as a true pioneer of sketch comedy.

The special will also feature original cast members Vicki Lawrence and Lyle Waggoner, costume designer Bob Mackie, as well as other comedians, comic actors and friends, including Jim Carrey, Kristin Chenoweth, Stephen Colbert, Harry Connick Jr., Bill Hader, Jay Leno, Jane Lynch, Bernadette Peters, Maya Rudolph and Martin Short, among others.

The Carol Burnett Show premiered on Sept. 11, 1967 and starred Carol Burnett, Harvey Korman, Vicki Lawrence, Lyle Waggoner and Tim Conway. Over its 11-season run, the show earned 25 Primetime Emmys, including three for Outstanding Variety-Music/Comedy Series. In addition, the show earned eight Golden Globe Awards, including one for Best Television Show – Comedy or Musical, and Burnett received four for Best Actress – Comedy or Musical.

I loved the Carol Burnett Show as a kid and teen. However, I must say the paid shows that have aired in recent years has soured my interest. While funny, they were totally a tease to buy a catalog that was overpriced. Yes, I will probably watch this special, but it is a lesson to not under-value your franchise by selling it on cable tv. But in the end, Carol was a huge star on CBS.

Best way to watch it, IMO - is You Tube, where they have a lot of the most famous skits - Harvey & Tim doing the dentist sketch, Tim's elephant improve, and lots of "Mama" stuff. I think the Gone with the Wind parody is there, too.

Carol Burnett apparently is cool with her stuff being on You Tube unlike certain others ( Viacom eh ) who scream copyright at the first notice that their stuff in online.

I think it's more likely the owners of the content who have to be "cool" with it. That may be Burnett herself, or CBS (Viacom)

To be absolutely legal, all of the performances have to be cleared. IIRC, Tim Conway was a recurring guest star for most of the show's run before becoming a regular?

This sounds like Michael Richards and the TV show "Fridays". For years he would not sign off which meant his performances would not be cleared. Despite the efforts of his co-stars and staff of Fridays, he still would not budge. It's not until recently that "Fridays" made it to Shout Factory and Hulu so I guess Richards finally signed.

Well, he's pretty much been MIA since his infamous on-stage rant at a comedy club.

Conway's health has declined in recent years. A couple of years ago, he made a public appearance(book signing of some kind) in southern California, and there were rumors going around that he seemed 'confused'. The next day, his publicist announced that Conway would no longer make public appearances.
Strictly speaking, though, Lyle Waggoner is on the special because he was a member of the original cast, while Conway, although he guest-starred throughout the show's early years, was not a regular until 1975.

Sorry to hear about his health. I wish him well.

Tim Conway is 83 while I wish him well too however at that age and beyond death is well expected. I got a kick when Alan Young from Mister ED and Jerry Lewis had died. People were saying and writing that they were "too young to die" and "why oh why...they could have given us more years of entertainment pleasure", Ah both men were well into their 90s when they passed I hate to see the reactions from most of the public will be once Betty White dies.

Speak for yourself; My mother was 102!

When Betty White's SNL hosting proved to be a rousing success, I can recall once person I know saying that all of the comedy legends should be invited to also host the show. One of his suggestions was Sid Caesar, who by that time was in a wheelchair.

I know several people who are 100 and over and thats a big deal. What I am talking about is those poor souls who cry "..he/she is too young to die !!"...and the person in question are in their 90s or older.

I

83 is pretty close to the life expectancy these days. You might compare it to a C average. It's not terrible but you hope to do better.

I think Sid Caesar did host SNL at least once in the early years when he was in better health.

I don't believe Betty White has made any television, or public, appearances in the last couple of years(last I heard of was when Valerie Bertinelli started a cooking show, which I don't even know is still on, and the rest of the 'Hot in Cleveland' cast appeared on the first episode).

I'm amazed anyone could say Jerry Lewis died 'too soon'.
