The WGPR calls were an error, once CBS took over in late 1994 the calls changed to WWJ-TV. The Blade likely never updated the call letters. They never really did have local news except for a brief period where a 30 minute broadcast, produced by Channel 50 aired at 11PM and then the also short lived 'First Forecast Mornings' that aired in 2008-2010. A 3 minute local weather forecast is all they have that's locally produced. It's interesting that both Headline News and Court TV built awareness of their cable brands by airing syndicated programming over broadcast television. I wasn't aware that Headline News was still producing the syndicated show as late as 1996.

I'm sure Fox didn't appreciate having their programming bumped for Pistons basketball. Might've played a role in that moving to cable soon thereafter.

When I lived in the Detroit area circa 1990, WKBD carried the Pistons and Red Wings.
Fox programming got bumped a LOT.

At the time the Tigers were on WDIV but I believe they made the move to Channel 50 at some point too.

By 1996, KBD had dropped Fox for UPN. The irony is that WWJ-TV's former sister station WWJ is an all-news AM station

At this point, WKBD was entering season two of Tigers baseball that spring; 1995 was their first season on 50. It just seemed kinda amazing that the Tigers lasted on WDIV for as long as they did, considering you already had two established indies (WXON and WKBD) on the air by the time Channel 4 took over in 1975; then again, for a long time, other major NBC affiliates (St. Louis and Cincinnati being prominent examples) bumped network primetime for local baseball anyway.

I meant UPN ftbllfan, thanks for catching that. I have to think that the Tigers paid off for WDIV for those years, at least more so than carrying the network programming would've.
