KKDJ 99.7 in Fresno is on the air

Today 9/26 99.7 in Fresno went from that tone to playing music, of what I heard driving for an hour it was 70s and 80s Classic Rock, they're calling it the next Generation of KKDJ, at the top of the hour they gave the KYAF 94.7 Firebaugh ID with KKDJ 99.7 Fresno, and Alice Cooper did a promo for "Nights with Alice Cooper" coming soon to KKDJ October 3, which btw already airs on KIOO Porterville. lol, It's not available in Clovis, all I get is KIOO.

It will be an interesting effect in the fringe areas at night with the stations having the same programming. Shame, just would have worked so much better on 98.5. Guess I can stop hoping for KIOO to get the KJUG treatment.

KIOO runs Cooper at six. KYAF's website has been promoting 7-12m.

I've caught the format going through Firebaugh and it's no KKDJ. The morning show is third rate at best.

Unless you live in the Tower or Downtown, will anyone ever care?

Need to stop covering up legit radio with these hobby stations....

I live in that fringe area as does kenrayc... near downtown Clovis. So I checked out 99.7 this morning using the PRD15 which is an excellent FM receiver but with no external antenna.. just a 29 inch whip. So with a lot of moving about of the radio around a couple rooms it was possible to hear "kkdj v2" in some positions but KIOO was the more dominant. The same as it had been everytime I checked for the past month while the tone blarred for the past month. BUT this afternoon, hmmm a very different situation. That little translator is BLASTING.. KIOO is NOT there! ? What gives? lol
Is Verne up to his same old tricks or could KIOO maybe be off the air? Anyway I sure miss having a 1/2 way decent receiver with a rooftop beam and signal level meters.

Have you ever heard of SDR (software defined radio)? It's a tuner only slightly bigger than a flash drive, and plugs into a USB port on a laptop or desktop computer. An app is used for decoding the signal (in software) and to control frequency tuning.

I have the RTL-SDR v3. On Amazon, it's only $25 and includes a starter antenna kit.
I mostly use it for FM broadcasts and listening to a nearby railroad, but an SDR is versatile, people use it to pick up NOAA satellites, airplanes, etc. This past summer, someone figured out how to decode the HD Radio protocol (NRSC-5).

Various adapters allow any type of antenna to be connected. The app I use (SDR#) has a spectrum analyzer and shows signal level.

You, me, kenrayc, and at least the other 90% of Fresno/Clovis.

Actually I don't live in a fringe area, I would get KKDJ jr strong, if it were on an actual open frequency.

I agree about that, but the band is pretty much full, but I think 102.3 would be less interfered with, KBLO Corcoran is on the Valley Floor with 19KW compared to KIOO at 1200 Ft with 25KW, 98.5 can't be used til the CP for KZLA 98.3 Riverdale expires in March.

Signal Update, as many of you know I make daily deliveries all over Fresno/Clovis, today 99.7 KKDJ did well in NorthWest Fresno not just the Tower District, it works well with no KIOO pops in Old Fig Garden and areas Marks and Ashlan, figure a total 180 from KIOO, but beyond Herndon going north it gets choppy, if you look at their coverage map think of it having a partial eclipse of the Sun on the SouthEast side of it from KIOO .LOL

Weekend Project, reconnecting my radioshack fm "The good one" ant on the building on my car port and run the wire to my house, and point it to get KKDJ 99.7 , the ant pole on the side of the house points towards KIOO, Bakersfield and all South Valley Stations including TV.there is the cross bar ant 5 feet lower its also KIOO only.

Those would all be great alternative spots on the dial and the overlap would probably happen more South of Fresno rather than South/East impacting much less potential listeners. I even think 104.5 would be great since the nearest full power is KSTT Atascadero and the frequency sounds clear most of the time (Even though tonight I'm picking up KOOH lpfm Hanford on a iHome clock radio in NW Fresno, so unless there are some "AMAZING" atmospheric conditions tonight, I'm speculating its something else, that might be a frequency worth considering in Fresno).

Actually I think 104.5 can work here, it has been used before, it was a lp station the had an Asian Language format about 10 years ago and also it was used for oldies before that (not Atascadero), a bootleg I think, this was before KTHN 104.7 Los Banos moved to Merced, but if 96.1 KEYQ LPFM can be used with KUBB 96.3 adjacent, Then 104.5 can be used with 104.7 being that they are on the same site and about the same power, but it would only work in East Fresno, maybe between Clovis and Sanger due to KJOI LP 104.3 Biola, and I think it would be far enough from KOOH LP Hanford.

99.7 KKDJ (KYAF-LP) has moved their transmitter to Gettysburg and Blackstone, and now is heard in North Fresno and at home in Clovis.

Caught it tonight coming down off Avenue 9 and 41 - seems a little overly processed. So, if the 104.3 founder is the money behind this new site for the KYAF translator (according to one somewhat interesting comment in an FB video on Verne's page) what's to stop them from adding another station to that same stick? Would be good to have KJOI available around metro Fresno.

I miss K100 KIOO 99.7 Classic Rock from Porterville/ Visalia, KKDJ (KYAF)repeats horribly same 50-100 or so songs, some times in the same order, this is NO KKDJ , in fact, KIOO is more like the Old 106 KKDJ than this station. of course I can listen to KIOO on-Line LMFAO

Yep a translator, one that must receive it's programming from it's parent station over-the-air.

All the way from Firebaugh.

I drove from hwy 5 & 152 down 5 and through Firebaugh and Mendota and Kerman I got KKDJ on 94.7fm (kyaf) heard it almost into fresno at whitesbride and 99 it died then i found the translator at 99.7 playing the exact same announcers and music. I really like the music library seem to be much bigger and broader than other classic rock stations. It's great to have a choice

Sure, I don't mind it at all. I'd rather KIOO upgraded to be heard farther north but they've had years to do that.

I do want to see that rig that can pick up KYAF crystal clear in stereo at Blackstone and Gettysburg.

It's on a building b/tw Ashlan and Gettsburgs on the west side of Blackstone the so called tower has a CB ant. on the top a loop for 99.7 and some old UHF Ants below, the stick can't be more than 60 ft, there's no way they can pick up 94.7 Firebaugh from there, I can't even hear 94.7 at 99 and HerndonLMFAO

Ken are you referring to the tower at Jenesn & Pilegard Equipment? Thats been there for decades. It's going to have to have quite a large directional array high up to be getting KYAF.
