Baseball Coverage

Good idea - Kelch would prob. want something in the area. Reds can start shuffling announcers all they want - who replaces Marty will be a TOUGH call. Good luck with that. (BIG Marty fan - great pipes & diction - painting the picture - not to mention his interplay with other announcers etc.) I vote big NO to banana phone.
I think it's blindingly obvious that Thom is replacing Marty.

I know that was the original intent when Thom first came here. Funny enough Marty & Thom couldn't seem to work together. Anyway, I have heard people complain that Thom gets off the game too much on other stuff. But I follow the Reds on radio - so haven't listened to Thom.

I agree Thom will be Marty's replacement.
It's a shame that Thom can border on unlistenable doing Reds games because he is very good at everything else he does. (somewhat like Dave Lapham, although Lap is a good listen when he isn't yelling all over Dan Hoard). Always enjoyed him on his national football and basketball assignments as well as on BTN when it first started. But he has become a gigantic homer with the Reds. Grumpy when they're losing or something bad happens and always willing to get onto some sidetrack as discussed here.
My wish is Brantley would do a lot more TV work and Welsh would come over to radio more often. Marty works well with both of them, but Brantley is much better on TV IMO (and he ought to be kept as far from play-by-play as possible). And whoever ends up getting that secondary play-by-play job, make them the primary pre- and post-game host live from the park. The Indians do that with Jim Rosenhaus and it works well.

I first thought they made a good team back in the early 90s when Marty worked a handful of innings on the Reds TV Network games. I don't think I'm getting my years mixed up, although I don't remember George Grande ever going over to radio. Before that, Steve Lamar worked with Joe on radio while Marty went over to be on TV with Gordy Coleman.
Guessing Marty got tired of TV work because he is the only full-time broadcaster that doesn't alternate between mediums.

BTW - how many broadcasters go from the booth to the field? Well one anyway. I enjoyed former Red Aaron Boone as color commentator of the WS this year. Now he's picked to manage the Yanks - yike! (He was a favorite interview of Hal McCoy - and really helped Hal when vision problems threatened his career. Hal was always great in the booth with Marty.)

OK - just announced: for now, Jim Day picked for play-by-play when Marty's not in booth - and do color with Marty when Cowboy on TV.

They went for the cheap move. Not a surprising move IMO, but I just can't believe Day is better than Kelch. Maybe he will change my mind.
I definitely don't see how this cuts down on the merry-go-round of who might work any given game on TV or radio.

Just happened to catch part of game today on 1360. Wasn't sure if every ST game aired. Enjoyed Jim Day. (ha ha - can hear Brennaman yakking it up in the background.)

OK - this James Rapine schtick is laaame. Can't even get basic info after the game 'cause the dude is so busy bashing his broadcast partner Chick Ludwig. I guess this is supposed to be cute. Sorry WLW - I just turned it off. So Rapine, you've got how much experience?

While I didn't hear the show, I am of the opinion that any grown adult male that calls himself "The Chickster" is prime for ridicule.

Ha - I'd like to hear Rapine paired w/Hal McCoy & pull that "you're sooo old" routine. Hey - Dayton has produced HOF sportswriters, & Chick has been a part of that baseball history there. Rapine also lowrated Chick for spotlighting local area product Adam Eaton's 5 hit career day yesterday w/the Nats. So local fans around here don't want to hear updates on Schwarber either? Or Ian Happ or Benintendi? He also lowrated Chick for criticizing the lineup. Huh? Find out what a 2-hole batter is supposed to do, then defend Price if you can!

Do stations actually get revenue from running PSAs? Love to hear an explanation of why 1530 ESPN cuts into Sunday night Baseball Game of the Week with 2 outs in the 9th and runs (count 'em) 4 stupid PSAs in a row, followed by a real commercial, hey - not done yet - followed by a promo, followed by the day's sports highlights! You can imagine how much of the game was not aired. Oh, by the way - prior to that - when the announcers called for "Station ID" - dead air followed, of course. I bet 1530 doesn't even have a PD. Do they have engineers on duty?

There are non-profits that run paid commercials... think Kars4Kids. But the definition of a Public Service Announcement is that it is a free service of the radio station.

Stations have not had engineers (or even board ops) on duty during all operating hours for many many years. Automation doesn't call in sick, and doesn't cost $7.25 an hour in perpetuity.

Edited to add: This game went until a few minutes after midnight. Most likely the station put a catch in the automation: if the game goes more than 4 hours, return to regular programming. And that's what you heard. The average baseball game is right at 3 hours, so not an unreasonable thing to do.

Ha - thanks. Can't have too much expectation on a Sunday night game.

Sad. 1530 is a terrific signal with a long history. Even with automation it can sound local and tight. However if there is not the staff to keep on top of traffic, the log etc...it will sound like it. There is no revenue for running PSA's.
