30th. Anniversary of The Rush Limbaugh Show, debut August 1, 1988

King, by his own admission, once admitted that he was to the left of Jesse Jackson.

You have a source on that? He was good friends with Bob Dole and Newt Gingrich.

I noticed, however, that he could often be extremely rude with callers during that last hour, which he called "open-phone Americas" or something like that.

That's not uncommon for talk hosts. Back in the 80s, they promoted the show with a campaign built around "Larry King hung up on me." He would have to be firm with callers, or they'd just ramble. He'd say "What's your question?" or "Get to the point." If he wasn't satisfied, he'd hang up. But as you say, it had nothing to do with politics.

It happens in sports talk often, and the callers don't even have to ramble. Years ago, there was one WFAN host who grew so irritated by the time-wasting "How ya doin'?" that nearly all of his callers were starting their conversations with -- the rest were starting them with "First time, long time." -- that he announced at the start of the show one day that he would instantly hang up on anyone who asked him how he was doing. He wound up hanging up on at least half the callers!
