Mix 87.7 to throw in the towel at end of January

RIP. However, Classic Hip Hop could have worked if it was catered to the Southern demographics. When BOOM 102.9 switched people on social media were furious. OG 97.9 isn’t exactly the same Classic Hip Hop sound that BOOM 102.9 was. Atlanta had a huge hip hop scene from the mid 90s to 2000s that you wont hear on OG 97.9.

Talk to them about leasing it. I bet they would be willing.

What would you guess the monthly lease value of that frequency in Atlanta is?

If an HD channel can go for $5 to $10 thousand at least, I'd guess that a lease of that FM channel (the same one as the successful MeTV FM has in Chicago) might be in the $50 k or over range.

That sounds like it would be in the ballpark. Then again when you're losing money and about to shut down you might catch a substantial break. You might get a start by just covering actual expenses for a couple of months

Have there been any rumblings from the FCC about getting rid of analog LPTV stations, which would kill off the Franken-FMs? I haven't heard anything but I can't see the FCC letting this go on forever. Last I heard the FCC wanted to leave analog LPTV in place in part because of the Franken-FMs.

What I'd really like to see is Channels 5 and 6 get repurposed for a 78-88MHz digital-only FM band.

I don't think Channel 6 is in play with the Atlanta TV repack.

Heck, someone could throw classic hits or soft AC on it and see if it sticks...

78-88 MHz FM is a non-starter. Remember, no one is buying radios anymore, so there's no incentive for manufacturers to make ones that tune additional frequencies. Also, most people seem to find what they're looking for in the 88-108 range.

I'm of the opinion that the Franken FM loophole will eventually be stitched tight and these pseudo-radio stations will have to pull the plug, but as you say, nothing has been even whispered about it yet, at least on this board. I don't know why the FCC would drag its feet to help the Franken FMs, unless they're afraid of some legal action from operators who suddenly will be owners of an illegal business.

87.75 in 25kHz or 75kHz deviation? Stereo format?

Can these stations legally broadcast a 75kHz signal? TV audio is 25kHz and can only broadcast stereo in BTSC using dbx noise reduction. Just saying.

Curious, if someone in Atlanta were to tune into Channel 6 on their TV set, what do they see?

Legally? I dunno, but certainly at least the Channel 6 LPTV stations in the NYC and Chicago area are transmitting audio with 75 kHz deviation and 19 kHz pilot tone MPX stereo, just like all the other FM radio stations. WNYZ-LP even briefly moved their audio carrier up to 87.9 MHz until the FCC caught them.

iHeart should consider flipping its ratings calamity @ 105.7 MHz to some sort of Urban format. It earned OK ratings previously under the "Wild" nameplate.

WTBS-LP; 3KW; TV Channel 6
Thanx. Also, what tower were they on?
I was driving through Gainesville today and picked up Spanish on 87.7, a different Spanish station on 87.9, and public radio on 88.1. The one on 87.9 gave its TOH call and location (in English), but had gotten too choppy to hear clearly - will keep listening.

105.7 is not a full Class C facility and it is a rimshot, with its principal coverage being Cherokee County.

Pull up any of the available population-by-ethnicity maps of the metro and you can see that the Urban audience is mostly to the southern side of the MSA, and the 105.7 signal is mostly to the northern side.

Not a good match for an Urban format.

https://www4.uwm.edu/eti/integration/atlanta.htm is one map, although it is over a decade old. It does show the areas where the African American audience is more likely to be found.

Isn't WTBS atop the Peachtree Plaza (what the kids call the Westin), along with 100.5?

I may or may not have been on top of this alleged "Westin" building many times over several recent years. Poked around all over the roof. Saw many cool things, but never saw anything that looked like a transmitter or antenna for 88.7.

That is... if I was actually up there (ahem).
