For broadcasters, Women’s World Cup rallies record audiences

https://www.washingtonpost.com/spor...casters/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.4fb93c0aaceb

Telemundo, the Spanish language broadcaster for the Women’s World Cup in the United States, has been running promotional commercials for the summer tournament featuring the tagline “Unstoppable Women.” The spots highlight statistics such as that 50 percent of global professional female soccer players receive no pay; that one-third of them need a second job to make ends meet; that nearly 20 percent report some form of gender discrimination.

The campaign features players such as American striker Christen Press and Argentine goalkeeper Vanina Correa talking on camera about needing to maintain a second job. “It is very difficult,” Correa says in Spanish directly to the camera.

“It couldn’t be a better moment to showcase women,” said Karen Barroeta, the network’s head of marketing. “What we want to do is own the narrative of empowering women because it helps promote the visibility of the tournament.”

Now the World Cup ratings has been released for the Quarterfinals.

The Americans' 2-1 victory over France set a record for the most-watched Women's World Cup quarterfinal match on U.S. English-language television.

Fox drew 6.12 million viewers for Friday's match, and peaked at 8.24 million. The game was the most-watched English-language soccer telecast in the country since last year's men's World Cup final.

I have watched at least one game per broadcast day (I get my 'broadcasts' over the 'net and not via Fox or FS1/2) and have yet to be disappointed. Still, these games showcase the many shortcomings of soccer played at its highest level. The big attraction to me is watching the female athletes play as hard as the men but with more than usual offense. These girls are GOOD!

True!

The English win over Norway got 7.6 million viewers on BBC1 so it will be interesting to see who wins on Tuesday, both on the pitch and in the ratings.

It's in UK primetime, which will make it an unfair comparison I suppose.

It is summertime here in the States so it probably means the soccer playing kids will watch and a few of their parents and coaches.

It's been a great tournament so far but it has also pointed out several deficiencies that FIFA is eventually going to have to address.

The standard is high and so have the audiences been.

I can't remember this much interest in a ladies tournament before. It has knocked the cricket world cup clean off the back pages of UK newspapers. Eight years ago BBC coverage was hidden away behind the red button sub channel. Now it's peak time BBC 1 and getting big ratings.

Wow, great game. Shame the England penalty effort wasn't better, because the standard otherwise was really high from both teams. I wonder how many were watching....

A big win for the USA but it was a very sloppy game. It is clear the USA is going to have to tighten its defense considerably before the next round. A game-winning tremendous PK save by the USA goalie but it was pretty clear to me there was an uncalled offsides on that same play prior to the foul (which, IMHO, was also a very cheesy call). I have never seen so much grabbing and flagrant fouling.

From a broadcasting perspective I noted that in the pre-game show there was intense publicity upon English players White and Bronze. White played like a latter day Phil Esposito (who used to stand in front of the opposing goalie and knock loose pucks into the net) and Bronze' (whom the British coach called "the best player in the world" name was hardly mentioned. Likewise they spent a ton of time discussing why Megan Rapinoe was not playing and she was hardly missed. Such is the depth of the American team but that doesn't get much coverage.

Overall, I think the broadcast coverage has been good but one might ask why Alexi Lalas is there. He doesn't seem to have very much to say.

An Update now including the World Cup Finals in the ratings.

The U.S. national women’s soccer team achieved a spectacular World Cup repeat yesterday, beating the Netherlands in a tense final in Lyon, France. If the early figures are anything to go by, the game also provided a strong finish for Fox in the ratings.

Sunday’s final posted a 10.0 overnight metered market rating. For comparison, the semifinal scored a 5.5 in the same demographic and went on to a total of just over 7 million viewers, while the quarter final against the host nation France posted a a 4.9 and ended up with 6.12 million total viewers. That metered market figure is up 20% on last year’s men’s World Cup final, which scored an 8.3 and was watched by a total of 12.5 million viewers.

The viewership benchmark for Sunday’s affair to beat is the 2015 final against Japan, which turned out to be the most watched soccer match in U.S. history with 25.4 million total viewers. However, it’s worth noting that the 2015 games aired in primetime due to the tournament being held in Canada.
