A deal to make satellite TV provider Dish Network the nation’s fourth largest mobile carrier is days away from being finalized — thanks to the Department of Justice, The Post has learned.

Under pressure from DOJ antitrust officials, T-Mobile and Sprint are on track to announce a deal to sell a slew of mobile assets to Dish as soon as next week, two sources with direct knowledge of the talks said.

The deal will include a spectrum-hosting agreement that will give Dish the chance to offer national wireless service within a year of the sale’s closing, sources said.

T-Mobile and its parent company Deutsche Telekom have also agreed to drop their demands that Dish, owned by billionaire Charlie Ergen, not sell more than a 5% stake in his company to a potential wireless partner, like Google.

Part of the move is to make T-Mobile compete against AT&T, Comcast, Charter with the rumored Dish deal.

Yes it will be rough for T-Mobile given that Dish is in contract disputes with Meredith, Disney and Fox most notably.

there's many wrongs with this thread, one thing, the title makes it look like the T-Mobile company in the US is being sold off to Dish when in reality, T-Mobile is in the process of merging with Sprint and thus must sell a few things off to make the DOJ happy to approve the merger. and second, this is unrelated to TV even if Dish is trying to enter the mobile phone/internet business. this outta go to the indrect to broadcastng off topic section.

The Justice Department is poised to approve T-Mobile US Inc.’s merger with Sprint Corp. under a divestiture plan that would equip satellite-TV operator Dish Network Corp. with the building blocks for a new wireless network, according to people familiar with the matter.

The companies have spent weeks negotiating with antitrust enforcers and each other over the sale of assets to Dish to satisfy concerns that the more than $26 billion merger of the No. 3 TMUS, +1.48% and No. 4 S, +5.78% wireless carriers by subscribers would hurt competition, the people said.

Dish is named as a party to get some of the divested assets of T Mobile and Sprint.

Satellite-TV provider Dish Network Corp. has agreed to pay $5 billion for wireless assets in a deal with T-Mobile US Inc. and Sprint Corp., setting the stage for the Justice Department to approve the $26.5 billion merger of the mobile-phone carriers, according to people familiar with the matter.


After weeks of negotiations, the parties have hammered out an agreement under which Dish will pay about $1.5 billion for prepaid mobile businesses and roughly $3.5 billion for spectrum, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the details are still private. Under the terms of the deal, Dish can’t sell the assets or hand over control of the agreement to a third party for three years, the people said.

The accord should allow the Justice Department to sign off on T-Mobile’s merger with Sprint as soon as Thursday. T-Mobile also is expected to reiterate that the economic terms of the Sprint deal, which it said would generate about $43 billion in savings, won’t be affected by the asset sale to Dish, the people said.

Now Charter has been named as a candidate to get assets of T-Mobile and Sprint.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Charter Communications (CHTR.O) submitted a proposal to the Justice Department to buy telecom assets being sold under the T-Mobile US Inc (TMUS.O) and Sprint Corp (S.N) combination, but never heard back from the agency, three sources familiar with the matter said.

U.S. officials decided to accept a deal to sell assets including Sprint’s Boost Mobile brand to satellite TV provider Dish Network (DISH.O) to resolve antitrust concerns, ending extensive talks on a merger the Justice Department is expected to approve this week.

The Justice Department’s lack of response to Charter could raise concerns among critics of the $26.5 billion merger of wireless carriers T-Mobile and Sprint that officials did not weigh all divestiture offers before deciding on a deal with Dish.

Details of the proposal were not immediately known, but sources said this week Charter had requested that there be an auction process for the divested assets.

True but you have to consider that T-Mobile was in the process of starting their TV Service recently but that's now uncertain though if T Vision is going to Sprint or Dish though.

With $5 billion worth of assets being spun off from the pending merger of Sprint and T-Mobile, Dish Network said today it will enter the wireless market as the fourth nationwide facilities-based network competitor.

To win the approval of the Justice Department for their deal, Sprint and T-Mobile agreed to a settlement under which Dish will:


Acquire Sprint’s prepaid businesses and customers, including Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile and the Sprint-branded prepaid service.
Acquire 14 MHz of Sprint’s nationwide 800 MHz spectrum.
Access the New T-Mobile network for seven years, including the ability to serve DISH customers seamlessly between T-Mobile’s nationwide network and DISH’s new independent 5G broadband network.
“These developments are the fulfillment of more than two decades’ worth of work and more than $21 billion in spectrum investments intended to transform DISH into a connectivity company,” said DISH Co-Founder and Chairman Charlie Ergen.

The DOJ clears way to the Sprint/T-Mobile Deal

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. regulators are approving T-Mobile’s $26.5 billion takeover of rival Sprint, despite fears of higher prices and job cuts.

Friday’s approval by the Justice Department and five state attorneys general comes after Sprint and T-Mobile agreed to conditions that would set up satellite-TV provider Dish as a fourth wireless company, so the number of major U.S. providers remains at four.


Dish is buying prepaid cellphone brands such as Boost and Virgin Mobile and some spectrum, or airwaves for wireless service, from the two companies. It will also be able to rent T-Mobile’s network for seven years while it builds its own. The Justice Department’s antitrust chief, Makan Delrahim, said the settlement sets up Dish “as a disruptive force in wireless.”

Sprint and T-Mobile combined would now approach the size of Verizon and AT&T. The companies have argued that bulking up will mean a better next-generation “5G” wireless network than they could make on their own.
