The Programming Disputes Thread

Dish and Meredith

We have Dish Network in our home and getting fed up with the Dish/Meredith pissing contest.
We've lost WNEM, the local CBS station.
Dish charges us $12.00 per month for eight (now seven) local channels, four of which are PBS stations.
Dish can certainly afford to pay a reasonable amount for the local channels. They're collecting enough from their customers.

Okay, I've vented.

Frank

What irritates me is how Dish and AT&T claim they're fighting for their customers, when they're really only interested in their own profits.

True and PR Damage. Like I said Dish and AT&T are Ed Stoltz on the national level and over TV contracts. People like Ed Stoltz claim to be fighting for radio regulations in the FCC when in reality as seen in the Sacramento radio thread its a power grab against Entercom's Sacramento Cluster.

In the AT&T Case its over how to protect HBO Max from competitors like CBS all access , CBSN (National and Local O&O's) , CW, CBS Sports app(CBS App's On Demand outlet) and Viacom (If/When Deal is final) plus Nexstar's Streaming outlet KRON-ON (San Francisco Nexstar outlet).

Dish its to protect the access to divested T-Mobile assets for the reason of the Dish/Meredith, Dish/Disney dispute.

And now Charlie Ergen is saying that Fox Sports networks may never be back on Dish: https://awfulannouncing.com/local-networks/dish-charlie-ergen-fox-rsns.html

I figure this is one of two possibilities: Either this is another threat to try to get Disney to cave in, or they're going to hold out until the stations are sold and try to make a deal then. Either way I still won't go back to Dish

Does Ergen still have his call in show on Dish? If so people who are fed up with these disputes need to hound him on his show IF they're allowed to get on.

Nice job Charlie! Sports fans will be happy to switch to another source for the RSNs. Enjoy losing money from baseball fans and restaurants/bars!
Of course, no progress on the biggest dispute of the year - DirecTV vs. CBS. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. Not one move in either direction. NFL fans will be pi$$ed off if this continues. Then you have Nexstar and DIRECTV, Dish and Meredith, and Northwest and DIRECTV...

https://tvnewscheck.com/article/mor...view-of-ruling-dropping-spanish-league-games/

Now the FCC will review the Bein Comcast dispute over airing of games.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The network that televises Spanish league soccer games in the U.S. says its games were illegally taken off the air by Comcast Corp.

BeIN Sports said Friday it wants the Federal Communications Commission to review a decision by its media bureau, which dismissed the network’s complaint.

BeIN Sports has televised Spain’s La Liga in the U.S. since the 2012-13 season. It was dropped by Comcast ahead of the 2018-19 season.

The network contends Comcast violated provisions that were in place when the FCC approved Comcast’s purchase of NBCUniversal. NBC has U.S. television English and Spanish broadcast rights to England’s Premier League.

Warren Schlichting should get blamed too for the Dish disputes he is one of the people escalating the disputes with the "Must make excuses because of blackout" scene.

Almost all restaurants and bars I've been in use DirecTV already. I think I've seen more use the local cable company (either as a primary or as a backup) than Dish Network

https://thestreamable.com/news/playstation-vue-must-extend-deals-with-nba-tv-and-eleven-sports

Playstation Vue carriage contract with Eleven Sports expires sometime in August.

After reaching deals with AMC, Turner (TNT, TBS, CNN), Discovery, and NBCUniversal (Bravo, E!, USA, CNBC) in June — and presumably NFL Network in July — PlayStation Vue has two upcoming expiring deals. One of those deals is with Eleven Sports in August and then with NBA TV in September.

On their website, PlayStation Vue shared:

Most of the programming/content you watch on PlayStation™Vue is licensed from programmers for the right to air their networks/channels. Once these agreements near expiration, we enter into renewal discussions where we work hard to try and obtain the best value for our customers. Though infrequent, sometimes certain licenses will not be renewed, in which case PlayStation™Vue would no longer carry the affected channels or networks. This section will be updated periodically to list channels and networks coming up for renewal. Please note that the dates listed below are subject to change.
In the past, Dwayne Benefield, GM of PlayStation Vue has said he thinks that the days of annual increases in content is over. “Consumers are saying enough is enough,” exclaimed Benefield. “If you look at the programmers, there’s an assumption…that they’re going to continue to drive increases in affiliate programming fees to help support their cash flows, which gets passed down to distributors, which are then passed down to consumers.”

My workplace uses DISH. I work at a bar and grill and five different TVs play different sports channels. We must get the Top 250 or something, because we can get TVG, TVG2, FS2, Longhorn Network, etc etc. We do not subscribe to all of the RSNs however, except for local Root Sports and (during non-Rockies games), we can play AT&T Rocky Mountain for some reason. Rockies games are blocked off and we don't get Extra Innings.

With the CBS O&O's being in dispute with DirecTV, WCBS/NYC has been replaced by WUSA/DC and KCBS/LA has been replaced by CBS 8/San Diego. These are only for block of network affiliates that DirecTV has in the Channel 390 area of their line up.

so basically for folks who qualify for distants like RV'ers and OTR truckers (and folks grandfathered in)

https://nypost.com/2019/08/02/cbs-viacom-merger-would-put-bob-bakish-in-charge-reports/

Now the CBS/Viacom Talks involve Bob Bakish being the leader of the merged outlet in the reported agreement. However the issue here is will the Viacom owned outlets(Comedy Central, VH1, Paramount, and MTV) be removed too by AT&T due to the CBS Dispute.

A merged CBS-Viacom would put Viacom CEO Bob Bakish at the head of the table, according to reports.

CBS acting CEO Joe Ianniello would be offered a job overseeing all of the combined network’s branded assets, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The two media companies, which are controlled by Sumner Redstone’s National Amusements, hammered out the leadership plan because the question of who will lead threatened to stand in the way of a deal, WSJ said.

Bakish’s elevation to CEO was widely expected by media watchers because he is the presumed favorite of National Amusements heiress Shari Redstone, who is vice chair of both CBS and Viacom.

Ianniello’s future role with the company had been a bigger mystery.

If or when CBS and Viacom merge disputes like this could affect an even larger number of channels if this dispute goes on for very long.

The disputes with AT&T and Dish are hurting their streaming services as well and it serves them right. when are they going to realize they're cutting their own throats???

https://www.businessinsider.com/cbs...ed-on-leadership-team-combined-company-2019-8

I would be putting question marks on the reported leadership change at CBS given that Bob Bakish is reported to be the next leader due to the CBS/Viacom talks and there will be uncertainties if the Viacom owned channels will get removed due to the CBS/AT&T dispute.

Some of the questions were answered in this link.

https://www.fiercevideo.com/video/directv-s-cbs-loss-cbs-all-access-gain

AT&T’s current contract dispute with CBS—which has led to channel blackouts on DirecTV, AT&T TV Now and U-verse—is not an ideal situation for anyone involved. But CBS All Access is seeing some upside.

Marc DeBevoise, CEO of CBS Interactive, said that CBS All Access has seen an “uptick” since the blackout began on AT&T’s TV services, according to Deadline.

Last month, CBS-owned television stations in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas, San Francisco, Boston, Atlanta, Tampa, Seattle, Detroit, Minneapolis, Miami, Denver, Sacramento, Pittsburgh and Baltimore went dark on DirecTV, DirecTV Now and U-verse. In addition, 117 CBS stations and affiliates went dark on DirecTV Now. Also, CBS Sports Network has been dropped nationally from DirecTV and DirecTV Now, and the Smithsonian Channel has been removed from DirecTV.

In impacted markets, AT&T has been directing subscribers to alternative means for watching CBS including the All Access service, which costs $5.99 per month or $9.99 per month with limited commercials.

Note this also includes cities like Las Vegas and Portland where the CBS affiliate is owned by Nexstar. CBS have been advertising the All Access app as a way for AT&T customers to go around the dispute.

Disney is in talks to get ESPN+ to Cable.

Ok then Disney just escalated the Dish/Disney dispute now this is being brought up though. Yes Dish is also guilty for escalating disputes too as seen in past disputes.

Dallas News is now telling viewers where to find Cowboys games in the middle of the AT&T/CBS Dispute

Antenna: If your TV is equipped with a digital tuner, you can connect an antenna to receive local over-the-air programming.

CBS All Access: The CBS subscription service is available on most streaming devices. It costs $5.99 monthly with commercials or $9.99 without commercials. There is a one-week free trial available.

Locast: The free app, also available on DirecTV and U-verse set-top boxes, offers local broadcasts in Dallas and other major markets.

Other streaming providers: Most other live TV streaming services -- such as Hulu, YouTube TV and PlayStation Vue -- offer free trials for new customers.

Also How North Carolina is affected by the AT&T Dispute given that CBS17 is a Nexstar owned station in North Carolina.

Locast...which is being sued by the four networks. And hundreds of TV stations including CBS-owned stations are off DIRECTV...hypocritical?
