That's the problem with contract disputes given that when its widely reported it tends to be judged by broadcast owner vs. provider though and when you have a broadcast owner planning to merge with another broadcast entity during the dispute then the arguments get more uncertain though every time just like when the Viacom/CBS deal was then uncertain though during the AT&T dispute. At the time I was not sure if AT&T would shut down Viacom too if the CBS deal came in during the dispute though.

Consumers have options if they can't receive the programming they want from certain carriers. If a consumer doesn't like AT&T, they can quit the service. It's not like they have any monopoly on satellite TV or programming services.

What are you talking about? DoJ challenged it in court and lost. The impacts from the poor reasoning by the judge are what have adversely impacted consumers and what my comment was based on. When there is a subsequent proposed merger involving content and a distributor, DoJ will be able to throw the negative consequences of this deal for consumers, which AT&T swore up and down wouldn't happen as clear and convincing evidence that other mergers shouldn't be permitted.

A CBS deal might not apply to you

Yes, AT&T and CBS agreed to a new deal. The problem is AT&T is also in the midst of a separate dispute with Nexstar. While the name Nexstar might not mean that much to you as a subscriber, Nexstar provides many U.S. viewers with access to a variety of channels. This includes CBS.

In fact, Nexstar claims to be "the largest independent operator of CBS affiliates." Adding that it currently serves thirteen percent of the U.S. Basically, this applies to "more than fourteen million households" in thirty-nine markets.

Needless to say, that's a fairly significant number of households and this is likely to be why a CBS viewer in the U.S. still cannot access CBS channels via DIRECTV NOW.

Regardless of the AT&T/CBS deal, Nexstar owns the rights to the channels it manages in select areas. As long as the dispute between AT&T and Nexstar remains in play, so will the blackout. This goes for CBS channels managed by Nexstar.

What's more, this dispute is unlikely to be remedied anytime soon.

This is an explanation on why places like Las Vegas and Portland is not getting their CBS affiliate back on AT&T and its due to CBS affiliates like KLAS-TV and KOIN-TV are Nexstar owned stations with a contract to air CBS Content.
 
KCYU is now running promos saying that DIRECTV subscribers will miss out on possibly the entire NFL season. Basically saying you're out of luck on DIRECTV. Wonder how many months...or YEARS this dispute will last?!!
 
Probably best to buy an antenna, if it's feasible to pull in the signal. Comcast adds a broadcast channel fee to my bill. It's not cheap either, over $6 a month. Really makes me want to stop video service as I get all the broadcast channels they provide OTA. My point in sharing that is that this retransmission issue is likely to become more heated as time goes on and ad revenue continues to be challenged.
 
Yes, that's what I have. I get 41 KCYU in 1080i HD. I'm sure a lot of Yakima/Tri-Cities bar owners are pi$$ed off that they are missing Seahawks preseason, soon to be Seahawks regular season! How many have flipped to Dish since the dispute?
shh!!...they'll get in a carriage dispute with Dish soon and KCYU will be off that platform too...just you wait...remember the Spectrum mess?

I wonder if some bars subscribe to two providers, with one (DirecTV usually) being the main provider and either Dish Network or the local cable company being the secondary provider

I don't know about bars, but that is one option that I'd never do for home use because DirecTV and Dish together are the worst about contract disputes and I have decided that I won't use either of them. But I have considered keeping basic cable and adding a streaming service, but not Sling (Owned by Dish) or DirecTV (AT&T TV) Now.

One local bar here in Yakima has a couple of Dish boxes near their televisions, but there's a few signs throughout the restaurant promoting 'NFL Sunday Ticket on DIRECTV'. Perhaps they pay for both?
Another bar has multiple dishes on their roof from past and present. There's an HD DirecTV dish, one for Dish Network, an outdated triple LNB DirecTV (that was SD only and they shut off the 101 satellite earlier this year), and an outdated *RCA* DSS...I'm sure it hasn't operated since 2002. Until recently they still had a rotting 7ft C-Band dish on their roof! I'm sure that was fun for the bartenders. They probably used "Satellite TV Week" to find MLB feeds, back in the day. Or used the Superstations and regional sports networks available to them.

sure there is. Lots of C-Band stuff up there. Not a cable alternative mind you....but still a fair amount of stuff up there
As example lots of the diginets are up there. On one satellite is AMGTV, Walk, Justice Net, Buzzr, Bounce, Grit, Escape, CourtTv, Laff. On another is StartTV (E&W feed), H&I (E&W), Decades, Movies!, MeTv and MeTV alternate (alt is used when a program doesnt have rights in a market). NBC (all 4 time zones), Cozi, CTV and CTV2 Canada, the Puerto Rico/USVI nets which is ABC, CW & FOX. The Luken stations like RTV, Action, Family Channel, Heartland and some affiliates too (so local content). Lots of news and sports feeds too. I had a C-Band dish 10+ years ago and it was fun to pick up sports feeds. Alot has changed since then but there is still a fair amount out there.

The crazy part is that I have not seen a C-Band dish in running condition for a decade in my area. I think this has to do with my area adapting to Wifi, Cable, and Cell Phone towers being installed and having a high percentage of subscribers in my area since the Digital TV switch a decade ago.
 
Merideth owns WFSB-TV (CBS) channel 3 of Hartford. It won't be a problem with them airing the Patriots until week 2 (week 1's game is on NBC). The only time I dealt with Dish Network was when I had a motel room for a time in 2017-18. No local was blacked out at the time. They also carried the audio of several Sirius/XM stations. Their "CBS 3" service in greater Springfield, MA should be safe, since a chunk of that area is Comcast.

I still find it funny that these stations almost never remind you that they're available over-the-air with the right type of antenna. :rolleyes:

Disney has announced that they might have a blackout with Dish due to the Dispute.

UPDATED with Dish statement: Disney has started advising Dish subscribers of a looming contract deadline with FX and National Geographic, which could go dark on the satellite TV provider.

The two companies previously had negotiated past a contract deadline in July, citing progress in the talks as the signals remained active on the satellite system. The current deadline is 9 PM PT on Tuesday.

“Our contract with Dish for the FX and National Geographic networks is due to expire soon, so we have a responsibility to make our viewers aware of the potential loss of our programming. However, we remain fully committed to reaching a deal and are hopeful we can do so.”
