WAAF sold to EMF....

If the core audience really loves it, they will seek the HD signals.

How often has that worked out? No one seeks out HD signals. Even if they did, all they would find is a jukebox with no personality, no compelling reason to listen, interrupted by a repetitive station ID between every song and probably commercials. Might as well go to Spotify or similar streaming service for a far better experience than that.

Moving the format to HD always seems to be nothing more than a way to placate angry listeners for a while before it's inevitably shut off.

Kudos to MassLive for its thorough, diligent reportage (full article):

It's unclear what plans Educational Media Foundation has for 107.3 FM.

Lol. It's also unclear where the sun will rise the next morning. Or what color the sky will be when it's clear.

It's also unclear whether the K-LOVE ID will have Westborough first in the ID or Boston... :D

Or maybe it will be Westorough/Worcester/Boston instead!

That's because HD radio as a platform was so poorly implemented, marketed and promoted that it had failed. Most people never knew it existed. Receivers were not readily available. Even store clerks at Best Buy, etc... thought people who asked about HD radios were looking for satellite radio. Only a few radio geeks who sought them out, and a few people who happened to get cars with them installed and didn't know what it was, had them.

With no receivers and no promotion, there were no listeners and no revenue, so the companies would have taken a loss to pay for talent and format development for a platform people didn't have receivers for, hence, after starting off with some promising ideas 15 years ago, HD subchannels became nothing but automated jukeboxes and simulcasts.

It was a classic "Catch 22" for failure, a lot like what happened to analog AM stereo in the '90s, that sounded surprisingly good for music on AM on a quality wideband AM stereo receiver in a clean reception area.

Things have been pretty quiet on WAAF's social media accounts and on air since the announcement. I've been listening on and off all day and haven't heard any jocks, although in the last half-hour, there seems to be a theme emerging in the songs they're playing ("Sad But True," "Last Day Under the Sun," "It's a Long Way to the Top") so maybe there will be some announcement coming soon?

There actually WERE receivers, but they were only as table radios, and it took about 8 years for HD to become standard in cars. There WAS a lot of promotion on the radio stations who were part of the alliance. But the concept was confusing because people needed to buy new radios, and as we said, the radios weren't portable or in cars, and the electronics industry was pretty uninterested in the whole thing. No major manufacturers included HD in their existing radios, and it was launched at a time when consumers were transitioning to other devices.

The first city must be, by regulation, the city of license. Those folks are pretty good on compliance, too.

The MSA is actually DECREASING in median age (slightly) and the MSA is increasingly affluent and diverse. None of this bodes well for the rock format in Boston as many middle class native MA residents are leaving the state.

When looking at age, remember that the radio Metro Survey Area is not the same as the government's Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The radio MSA in PPM markets is 6+, while the other MSA is 0+.

In any case, the median age is 38 in both, a bit older than the national average. It is not decreasing significantly.

Incomes are a bit higher, but so is the cost of living.

The ethnic change is primarily among Hispanics. Classic Rock is big in Latin America, but any modern form is not. And the rock fans from Latin America are middle and upper class, and they don't migrate except in cases where the country has leaned Socialist... Venezuela, Nicaragua, Bolivia and Ecuador in recent years. So most rock formats have little appeal among Latin American immigrants and, at least, the first generation born here.

I'm sure I'm going to spark a fire here, but I am the only one who thinks that religious stations should stay out of the commercial portion of the band? Especially since they are buying all these high power stations in big markets (with tax free money) and running 99% satellite programming begging for more money. I still can't believe what happened to PLJ and now this.

but I am the only one who thinks that religious stations should stay out of the commercial portion of the band?

Nobody else has any money. You don't see Apple or Google buying towers & transmitters. Where is the next generation of radio buyers?

There aren't any laws preventing religious broadcasters from buying commercial stations. Try getting such a law passed with this Congress.

Yeah, I've been listening the past 90 minutes and haven't heard anything outside of music, imaging and ads. Surprised they're already on autopilot.
