They preempted that for this?

How late does a sports event go before stations have to preempt or JIP a show, in overnight, in order to get the morning news on time? Of course it doesn't apply for ABC or CBS on weekdays.

Depends on the station. I know when the Daytona 500 overran by 37 minutes on FOX recently, evening programming was delayed until around 1:10 AM Eastern when the stations JIP'd the shows for those time slots.

WABC New York catches up around 4:00 AM at the latest on weekends. Last year, when the Wheel of Fortune reruns would get bumped by College Football, one of the varying time slots for it was 4:00 AM Sunday morning. If this happened after an overrunning Saturday night game, Wheel would still start late, so my DVR would often get half of the show before it (usually Celebrity Page), and half of Wheel. This year, the Jeopardy! and WOF reruns always aired at 4:30 and 5:00 AM Sunday mornings since ABC's College Football scheduling was more consistent. Both shows always appeared to be on time, at least WOF was. I do know WABC often airs movies around 2:00 AM Sunday morning so I wonder if those are ever affected.

Although not overnight, on KRQE in Albuquerque (CBS), if Jeopardy! is scheduled right after a sporting event (or sports followed by local news) and it overruns, J! will always start from the beginning and air in full, and WOF gets JIP'd. No idea why they do this. If anything, they should do it for both shows. KOMO Seattle does the same but for both shows, mainly on Saturdays, where their post-NBA lineup is an hour of local news, then WOF, then J!. When NBA or other sports overrun, the game shows both air in full after the news runs for a full 60 minutes. I don't know when they play catch-up but I do know that their 11:00 newscast will also start late if there's sports overrun.

Yesterday's Super Tuesday coverage on the Big Three varied out west.

In all time zones, ABC coverage began at primetime (8 ET/PT; 7 CT/MT), except for the three California-based O&O's - KABC LA, KGO SF, and KFSN Fresno, which all began coverage at 5 PT all the way until 11.

West CBS coverage lasted from 6-10 MT and 5-9 PT. The PT ones for the most part moved the 7-8 programming to the 10 hour, and added local news at 9, though some opted to start the coverage after 5. KCBS in LA started it at 6:00, and followed it with two hours of local news from 9-11, bumping Inside Edition and Entertainment Tonight to 2:07 and 2:37 AM PT. KPIX in SF began the coverage at 6:30, pre-empting a repeat of Family Feud, and also airing two hours of local news from 9-11. Most of the Mountain CBS's did not make up the pre-empted syndies at all. One of the few that did was KKTV Colorado Springs, which bumped Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! to 12:37 and 1:07 AM, replacing the "B" run of 25 Words or Less and their only airing of Hot Bench.

NBC coverage in MT was officially 7-10, but it looks like affiliates could opt to start it earlier. KPNX in Phoenix began the coverage at 6:30, keeping the 6:00 newscast but pre-empting Extra (which repeats overnight). For PT, everyone had coverage by 8, but some opted to start it at 7. KNSD, an O&O, moved Wheel and Jeopardy! to 7.2 Cozi TV, and a few others carrying those shows pre-empted them altogether, with no make-goods even though those shows are almost-always made up when pre-empted by other means. KHQ Spokane kept the Jeopardy! repeat at 6:30, but did not air the first-run ep or Wheel, even though they would always move them to the following weekday afternoon when they would often get pre-empted by local basketball games.

LA also had local coverage on some of the lesser-network affiliates. KCAL (indie) added an additional local newscast at 7:00 PT, pre-empting the "C" and "D" runs of Family Feud (the show airs 4x consecutively from 6-8). KTLA (CW) aired coverage from 7-10, pre-empting 2.5 Men x 2, The Flash, and DC's Legends of Tomorrow. 2.5 Men's were bumped to 11:35P/12:05A, replacing Friends x 2, and the two CW primetime shows are moved to Saturday night at 8 and 9P, replacing two local shows, though both were repeats this week. KCOP (MyTV) also aired local coverage from 8-10, pre-empting Chicago PD x 2.

In San Fran, KRON (MyTV) aired four hours of local coverage from 8-12 PT, delaying their 11P-2A lineup of Chicago PD x 2 and IE/ET (both encores from 7-8P) an hour to 12-3, skipping the hour of Paid Programming at 2A.

Update all Tennessee TV outlets are pre-empting the Tornado fallout for the COVID-19 Press Conference at the governors offices. Please be advised that multiple counties and states around the country may declare statewide emergencies similar to Solano and Los Angeles (On the County levels) or Statewide emergencies similar to California may pre-empt all OTA programming in your area.

KSBY in Santa Barbara (NBC) is airing the Tuesday-Friday episodes of Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune a day behind, and the Friday episodes will replace the previous season repeats on Saturday.

Note that Wheel's time slot on Saturdays tends to vary on Pacific NBC's because of SNL now airing live with the East at 8:30. On most Saturdays, affiliates will schedule a repeat of an hour-long NBC primetime show such as The Voice or Dateline before SNL at 7:30. KSBY usually airs Saturday Wheel at 6:30, before Jeopardy! instead of after. KNDO/KNDU in Yakima tends to change Wheel's time slot each weekend, sometimes airing it as early as 4:30 PM, and other times just not airing it at all (Jeopardy!'s repeats consistently air at 6:30 PM Sundays).

In the past, KSBY has made up J!/Wheel pre-emptions during the 12 PM hour of the following weekday, replacing J!'s secondary run at 12:00 and an infomercial at 12:30 (no news at noon here). There was also at least one instance of them airing the current day's Wheel in the 12:30 slot, 7 hours early, due to a local contestant's episode being pre-empted by Winter Olympics coverage.

In the East, we get a rerun of SNL during prime time. Do they get that out west too?

This is how it works in the Pacific Time Zone:

When SNL is a new episode, it airs live from 8:29-10:02 PM PT. A repeat of an hour-long NBC primetime show (Dateline, The Voice, NCIS, etc.) airs from 7:30-8:29, pre-empting the usual 7:30 show or moving it slightly earlier. After the live SNL, a repeat of a previous SNL airs, edited down to an hour, followed by local news at 11:00, then an encore of the new SNL, presumably with small changes to fix mistakes or accidental profanities like they would do for the West Coast airings before the show began airing live there.

When SNL is a repeat, the West has the same primetime lineup as the East, with the 7:30 time slot left open, and SNL airs at 11:30 PT.

The Mountain Time Zone varies, but it usually involves the hour-long SNL repeat airing sometime in primetime before the live broadcast, sometimes delayed an hour for local news. On KPVI in Idaho Falls, repeats of Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune air from 6-7 MT always, followed by a Dateline rerun, then the hour SNL rerun at 8:00, local news at 9:00, and the live SNL at 9:30, followed by a repeat of Judge Judy at 11:00, then the SNL encore. KYMA in Yuma airs two Dateline repeats from 7-9, the hour SNL repeat, local news at 10:00, then the live SNL at 10:30, delayed an hour. They do not air an encore.

The coronavirus has reached Danbury, Connecticut. A press conference began from Danbury City Hall at 7:30 PM Eastern. WFSB/CBS and WVIT/NBC are both airing it in place of ET and All Access, respectively. WTNH/ABC is sticking with Wheel of Fortune, possibly because most TV providers in Danbury, which is part of the NYC DMA, do carry WFSB and WVIT (in addition to NYC's WCBS and WNBC), but not WTNH (though Xfinity did have it until ~2017). WTNH is streaming the conference, however. WTIC/FOX is also sticking with regular programming with BBT.

With the North Dakota state girls b-ball tourney championships tonight Forum Communications (WDAY/WDAZ/KBMY/KMCY) ABC stations moves the NBA pre-game and game over to the WDAY/Z 'Xtra channel (DT3 on all stations). Its in HD at least

In Mankato, MN tonight's rerun of Wheel of Fortune is being moved from KEYC 12-1 CBS to KMNF NBC 7-1 due to the Mountain West Basketball final being shown on CBS
A rerun of Big Bang Theory is pre-empted

Interesting. Is that something they do often? It's a smart move since KMNF already airs the Jeopardy! reruns there at 6:00, so the two game shows are together. From the looks of it, on the weekdays, KEYC airs the usual News>Wheel in the 6 hour, while KMNF airs J! at 6:00 (quite rare for CT, especially non-FOX's) and a repeat of KEYC's 6:00 news at 6:30 (Wheel and either of J!'s two weekday runs are not allowed to air in the same time slot on weekdays if the market has them on separate stations, although KAIT's ABC and NBC stations in Jonesboro, AR airs both at 6:30 CT on Saturdays).

All prime access syndies on CBS are pre-empted on the East Coast today by the Mountain West tourney. WCBS New York, rather than skipping ET altogether like usual, is bumping it to 5:00 AM tomorrow morning. WFSB Hartford is bumping it to 1:35 AM.

Also, WABC is pre-empting the J! rerun tonight for a special on women's rights. It's pretty common once football season is over for them to air specials at 7:00 and/or 7:30 on Saturdays. When J! gets pre-empted, it usually airs at 1:00 PM Sunday, but if Wheel is pre-empted, it airs at 4:00 AM Saturday or Sunday morning, even if both shows are pre-empted (though during college football, they both aired Sunday morning)

And in yet another instance of KRQE doing everything they can to make sure Jeopardy! airs even in repeats while WOF gets bumped for the slightest thing... for most of the past few weekends, including this one and next, WOF at 6:30 MT is replaced with one of the E/I shows that's supposed to air in the morning on CBS (that pet show with Kel Mitchell that I forget the name of). WOF is bumped to 1:07 AM, but Jeopardy! is left as-is. I get E/I shows are mandatory and all, but it seems weird to air them right before primetime, even though I guess it's because its time slot is bumped by the live sports. Still, Sunday or even Monday morning would probably be better. I've seen stations make up E/I shows in weekday morning slots before.
