Disney to furlough nonessential employees across company,

And as soon as someone from a hotspot proves just what a small world it is, so to speak, and kicks off a mass infection...boom goes the entertainment scene again. Temperature checks are a false security blanket. Way too long an asymptomatic transmission period. Unlike, say, a supermarket where you can take steps like sanitizing carts continuously, and people get in and move around with purpose, and more and more with masks, what do you do with Space Mountain? That spittle is everywhere, not just six feet apart. I get the desire to restart that piece of the economy, but there’s a hell of a problem doing so.

IHME models show stabilization in California by early June - I'd bet Anaheim opens back up on July 1st with a lot of restrictions and whatnot. Whether that's temperature checks at the gate, limited capacity on rides, 1/3-1/2 caps on visitors or even cancellation of fireworks. Fauci rolling out antibody tests is a great sign - it's just we need them to be 99.9% effective. Also, construction had to be stopped on the new Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure, which was supposed to open in July (and will probably be delayed until fall, if we don't have a strong 2nd wave).
Orlando's outta luck until July-August IMO. The curve has not really flattened because of the governor's decisions. Even the Orange County FL government says they may not be able to open anything until early June...and WDW is down on the bottom of that list.

I doubt that Disneyland will open until there is some type of disease control or reduction medication. People are not going to take their children to a congested place unless there is total security. And California is not going to like opening an attraction that brings in, mostly, out of state and out of country visitors. That could start things all over again.

It's also doubtful that the park would be profitable with such limited attendance.

I'd say that concerts and amusement parks will even be in doubt in the fall unless major advances are made in the control of the virus.

This is a much bigger problem for theme parks than broadcast. Disney is missing out on tens of millions each day those parks remain closed. Networks like ABC and ESPN, in spite of professional and college sports being suspended, are inconvenienced by comparison.

Yes, the parks and ships have 0% attendance. But the network revenues are off by somewhere around 90%, too.

Only the paid home viewing options can be profitable for them now. That is why over the weekend they announced 45,000 layoffs.

Now Bob Iger is named in a profile as one of the people being forced back in as he was originally planning on leaving Disney. Now Bob Iger (Former Disney CEO/ Disney Adviser) and Bob Chapeck (Current CEO) are now trying to save the company as reports of accelerated downfalls are happening due to COVID-19 pandemic.

If you read the industry trades, Iger pushed his way back to help stabilize the company and to build a new, post-virus enterprise. He realized that the transition to a new CEO at this time needed some backup from him as the whole business model has changed.

Update Disney has announced Pay Cuts from the ESPN division. Yes this includes ESPN Pundits getting Pay cuts.

ESPN, struggling to keep fresh programming on its schedule with live sports sidelined by the coronavirus pandemic, is asking some of its best-known personalities to take pay cuts.

“We are asking about 100 of our commentators to join with our executives and take a temporary salary reduction. These are challenging times and we are all in this together,” the Disney-owned sports-media giant said in a statement. Sports Business Journal previously disclosed the cuts.

The salary reductions are likely to affect the network’s highest-paid commentators, who include personalities like Stephen A. Smith and Mike Greenberg. ESPN is seeking cuts of 15%, and would encompass three months of pay cycles, according to a person familiar with the matter. Executives hope the pay cuts will tamp down a need for furloughs, and keep paychecks intact for lower-paid ESPN employees who don’t earn the types of salaries that the big-name personalities do.

Some pundits are on the payroll and some are contractors. Far as Disney is concerned; employees on the payroll are easier to work with, and thus mandatory pay cuts or furloughs are simple to enforce. Contractors work so many appearances/hours under contracts.

The ESPN talent has been asked to take cuts. They have contracts. They can decline.

In which case, they will be fired. Or they will be transferred to do something they won't like.

This is not the time for people to try to get things that are impossible to give and which will negatively impat other co-worker.

I just spoke with my retirement investment adviser, and it was mentioned that Disney will come back... if it can get through all this... as a totally different company. The cruise business may be dead for years, and many people will not travel, go to movie theaters and the like. In fact, the "worst case" advisory was to not count on Disney stock as having any future value.

Six Flags plans to reopen their parks in Mid-May, but they attract just local/regional crowds.

I'll bet $100 that they don't.

Some of this optimistic projection is to try to keep investors from panicking.

Mid May? Maybe a park, somewhere. But even that seems highly suspect roughly a month away. For some others, it’s not even in the realm of remote possibility. Unless they’re just trying to get people killed.

There will be some foolhardy types who will line up whenever the attempt to reopen is made, and in whatever form it takes. But there is next to no chance that industry returns to anything resembling what was normal for quite some time. And whatever the new normal becomes, it will be markedly different.

This is a PR scheme to make a headline and keep the stock from tanking (pardon the pun). By the time May rolls around and with little changing, Six Flags will 'open to employees and their families who socially separate'. Or some similar face-saving move. Following that announcement, there will be some bullet points stating (something to the effect) that Six Flags continues to hold the health and safety of our loyal customers our first priority.' 'Therefore, we will keep the parks closed for the general public and continue to evaluate any schedules well in advance.' Blah...blah..

There are states like California that are speculating Early June though for a possible reopening but even thats out of the question as long as we do not have a vaccine in place for COVID-19 or any antiviral in place that is really proven to stop COVID-19.

Just like other media outlets furlough's and layoffs have been taking place this week due to the COVID-19 fallout. Also the Disney Parks have been closed for some time because Disney inc has to comply with California's Shelter in place orders.

I can't imagine what a lot of their employees are going to do that work the two United States theme parks Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Through they can still make money on movies, if people are ordering them online, or with Disney +, as I got to imagine that people that are subscribers, are getting their moneys worth of films and tv series, ince a bunch iof people have to stay home all day expect for essential trips.

The only 'parks' that will open in May, and this is not 100% (just more predicting), are state parks and trailheads with ranger/law enforcement checking crowd control. I would be very happy to be able to hike the petrified wood forest, Robinson Canyon, Manastash, etc. next month before the flowers go away. The last time I hiked was on March 18th up Rattlesnake Dance Ridge in the Yakima canyon, and while there were 15-20 people there we were all separate and no groups over 2-3 people.
But if the hikes won't open in May I'm positive they'll have everything lifted in June and I can go romping around the Teanaway - where the land is littered with wildflowers.

I have it from a reliable source, that Disney construction projects are still working on schedule in the Parks and Resorts. As with many States, construction workers are considered essential-employees. Grounds maintenance and animal care givers are also working 24/7, but with reduced staff on shifts.

The economy will re-open in some form long before there's a vaccine or pharmaceutical cure. Just putting that out there, because a lot of people seem to think the status quo will persist for months. It will not.

What might be more likely is a regional lockdown, where a particular city or metro area shuts down for a few weeks if they have a hot spot, like the San Francisco Bay area did before the Governor expanded it statewide.
