Oldest Extant Off-Air VHS/Beta Tape You Have

Talk about a bizarre experience today, and this is a lesson to those who buy "non-home recorded releases". I bought an old original 1979/1980 VHS release of Blondie's Eat to the Beat. I noticed a small piece of tape over the record tab so I thought the contents were taped over as blank VHS tapes were the equivalent of $60 today per tape, even then. Instead, the contents of the original tape were intact, but 15 seconds after it ended, there were tons of clips late 70s to early 80s TV content:

-Kasey Kasem presenting "Tide Is High" Blondie music video
-Peggy Flemming ice skating performance from ABC Sports special from China (1982 was the estimated broadcast date)
-Short clip of Blondie being interviewed by Dick Clark
-Short clip of unknown ballet performance
-Clips of Anne Murray performances on the Merv Griffin Show episode dated November 22, 1979!!!! Also included the interview segments afterwards. The song she performed was made famous by the movie Urban Cowboy.

Lesson learned, always check your tapes, even the commercially duplicated ones.

Looks like that WCI/Warner Home Video tape of the Blondie was 42 minutes on a T-60. 18 minutes left over at the end of the VHS.
Were they all recorded in SP like the retail tape, or LP?
There's a similar example on YouTube where someone watched the 1956 movie 'Anastasia' on the Magnetic Video tape, and after the movie ended and the VHS went to black screen, whoever owned the tape had recorded part of the Mowgli's Brothers cartoon on it from CBS, taped in May 1979. I know some folks have discovered TV content on public domain tapes (Goodtimes, UAV, etc) where they failed to take the recording tab out.

A few years ago I found a VHS tape in a recorded lot that was a taped-over retail VHS of 'Three Colors: Red', still had the codes on the bottom of the tape. Had 5 hours of Fox Family on it from 1999. Not bad.

Looked to be recorded in LP as the Anne Murray segment was over 10 minutes alone.

That is interesting about the Magnetic tapes, I'll have to go through my box of Magnetics and see if some goodies are hidden at the end of reels.

I've never found any home recordings off a retail VHS, but I may need to give a second look after reading about this! A piece of tape over the tab is usually a dead giveaway that it was home recorded, so always look out for them. Speaking of that, another Betamax box is due to arrive today or tomorrow as I've still got designated space for about 30 more tapes. The listing doesn't show much except for the sides of the tapes and one that's about three-quarters into the tape, as well as a descriptor that says "many seem to have some sort of home movies". The tape stock consists of 17 Sony L-750s circa 1980 (the black/gray stripes with red lettering), along with 10 DuPont Primetime L-750s with a 1978 copyright on the sleeves, as well as about a dozen in more on plastic/book-style sleeves. If you can't go into the casino safely, I'd say this is the next best thing, not to mention a lot more fun to hunt through, even though many machines have special scenes on bonus games.

Talk about another one that got away and hopefully a real trader and not a casual fan got a hold of those: A lot of 50 Beta tapes, all presumably consisting of at least one episode of Dynasty, first-run, sold for $154 after being listed as an auction on eBay last night. It's happened before, but don't be afraid to place an early opening bid to block others from BINs! You can always make that late snipe later like I've seen time again. Most tapes contained four episodes and many list "60 min. each", with presumably means that the commercials were intact. That adds up to an episode count in the high 100s, so that likely means about six or seven seasons worth of shows were likely present, basically most of the run from sometime in 1983 or 1984 to the end. I was never a big fan unlike the daytime soaps, and at least DVD is an easy option for that.

Got that Beta box from CA in today. Not so great in terms of find total, but when you get five when Carter was President, you can't complain too much since the seller accepted my return. Over three-fourths were Red Light District junk (a.k.a. X rated stuff), so those are going to be sent back. Only a small amount where rental copies. But here are the five tapes I'm keeping this time, in order of finds:

TAPE 1: S.H.E., the CBS Saturday Night Movies presentation starring Cornelia Sharpe and Omar Shariff, followed by the first nine minutes of the KNXT (now KCBS of course) 11 O'Clock news, recorded on 2/23/1980 w/commercials. The movie starts shortly after the first ad break following the intro.

TAPE 2: A Cheryl Ladd ABC Special taped preseumably off KABC on 5/19/1980 without commercials, opening, and part of the closing cut, followed by a rental dub of Blondie's 1981 music video compilation Eat To The Beat, then Olivia Newton John's Physical video taped off an unknown channel (not MTV) in late 1981 or early 1982, before cutting back to approximately the last 40 minutes of the special Johnny Cash: The First 25 Years taped off KNXT/CBS w/commercials.

TAPE 3: Back when "Wonderful Christmastime" was a holiday current and the day after Thanksgiving was usually called just that comes one of my earliest complete primetime blocks ever found. Sure, it isn't dramas or sitcoms, but it delivers with almost all of the ABC Friday Night Movie presentation of The Birth of the Beatles starring Stephen Mackenna and Rod Culbertson, followed by The Playboy Roller Disco Pajama Party, all taped off KABC on 11/23/1979 w/commercials. I've already got that Playboy special recorded of KSTP that I acquired in a trade a few years ago. The tape ends with about five minutes worth of clips off of an episode of Dance Fever in late 1979.

TAPE 4: This is my favorite find of this lot. The tape starts out with likely a rental dub of the Rocky Marcian-Muhammad Ali fight, then it kicks back over to KABC on 7/19/1980 near the end of the second round of arguably one of the greatest boxing fights of all time: the WBC Welterweight Championship between Robertro Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard, going the full 15 rounds and containing all of the commercials. After the decision, the tape briefly returns oddly to that same Marciano-Ali fight, but it soon returns back to ABC with part a live interview between Duran and Leonard (the match was taped a few weeks earlier). Then comes the full 6 O'Clock KABC Eyewitness News followed by the first ten minutes of its version of PM/Evening Magazine: Eye on LA, featuring a story on teenage hitchikers. Too bad the Olympics were boycotted as ABC likely would have held opening ceremony coverage instead that same day.

TAPE 5: Most of the Lynda Carter Special off KABC on 1/12/1980 with some commercials, followed by a Donna Summer special also taped off KABC on 1/27/1980 without ads unfortunately, before it jumps forward for approximately the last 45 minutes of the 1980 Oscars and the first 40 minutes of Olivia Newton-John's Hollywood Nights special on 4/14/1980 w/commercials. I've got the full Academy Awards off of ABC's San Jose affiliate from a trade already, and although that ONJ special is found on YouTube, it comes from an east/central recording with the voiceover during the credits indicating that the Oscars were up next.

Well, at least its fun to discover stuff that's truly vintage is still out there, as opposed to the "Millenial Vintage" definition of mid/late '90s through mid-late '00s that's starting to take off. It's becoming quite pricey when it appears though. I'd still prefer The Whipshers and Manhattans to Usher and 702 for instance since they've got the funk that the later two lack.

Meanwhile, I lowballed this lot and felt relived that this lot just seemed overpriced, probably living up to the hype that the seller is from NYC, and of course vintage commercials can be quite dramatically different from all the lost businesses there. Pretty much all movies and a few TV ones like The Day After. Hopefully the hunter will have fun discovering a treasure trove of late '70s/early '80s Madison Ave. gold on those. At least I'm only out shipping on mine and likely will net back much, if not all of it through my little finds.

I just found this forum thread that's basically the same as this one. The last post was eight years ago, but it does show that there are quite some varied finds, including one person who was involved in the Betamax case. Some highlights of what some people recorded were a bunch of Don Kirshner, Uncle Floyd, Midnight Specials, and a lot of MTV/Friday Night Videos/SNLs from the late '70s and '80s. One guy first purchased a VCR in March 1976, and another lists all of his recordings that he made in 1981, with a lot of Beatles/Disney related stuff. Quite a few happened to tape that Birth of the Beatles TV movie that I just found as well. No mention of genres like soap operas, game shows, cartoons, and local news. Toward the end, there's even a man who happens to have 1/2" Reel To Reels of first-run Mission: Impossible episodes from 1970! I've almost never seen any 1/2" episodes for sale, even on eBay. I wonder if those posters are still around and have digitized or sold off their collections, since there's a lot of good stuff out there that's still worth preserving. That one poster near the end who mentioned that they didn't purchase a VCR until late 1986 and felt they were last on the block was actually average overall (though keep in mind a lot of rural areas were the primary reason for the laggards, and thus the difficulty in a lot of pre-90s (and especially pre-1986) recordings that are present in triple digit ADI's.

I'd actually like to see that Birth of the Beatles movie, especially after I just saw Backbeat last week, which covers some of the same historical material on the band.

From what I've read Birth of the Beatles was roundly panned by critics and the band itself, and never has had a home video release.

Was the X rated stuff copies from rentals or actual public access shows like Midnight Blue? Curiously enough, X rated material is the prime reason that my local thrift stores give for not selling home recorded VHS tapes. They always say they are worried that that content might be on there though I've only come across it a time or two out of hundreds of examples.

An estate sale near Thorp WA delivered earlier today. There were a few duds, home movies and 'Overboard' with no promos, but here are the rest, OTA tapes from the Seattle area...with a rare Seafair find!

(This is my first find for the Torchlight Parade. KIRO used to air this every July for years, and they took it off the same year, 2017 I believe, that they got rid of the hydroplane broadcasts. I still have the full '88 hydroplane race from Seafair on tape and need to upload it.)

Yakima County made it into Phase 1.5 of the COVID opening plan. Outdoor dining, hair cuts, limited retail and yard sales/estate sales are allowed. I went out to two estate sales in Yakima yesterday and came back with a massive lot worth waiting through the pandemic for. Masks required and I also wore gloves, because Yakima County is still actively going through coronavirus cases. Tons of Yakima-taped goodies, many from the 1980s!

The Tieton Dr estate sale also had a vintage Quasar VCR from 1985, an early Hi-Fi unit with a lot of neat features - audio levels, Dolby Noise Reduction, slow motion features, etc. I didn't get it because these '80s VCRs are often worn out with bad belts and/or power supplies. I did get a replacement Sony SLV-N55 for $5.00. My other Sony's heads are starting to wear out with frequent static on EP and LP tapes. After putting in 300+ tapes, I guess it's time for recycling. The Sony has been one of the best VCRs I've used since starting this hobby.

More goodies found on Friday. This time I managed to break my personal record for the oldest recordings in my collection!

Earlier in the week, there was a listing on estatesales.net for a sale in Strongsville and I saw a shelf full of VHS tapes (including at least 12 home-recorded tapes, as well as some Betamax) in one of the pictures, but the sale ended up being cancelled. Another picture featured a portable AM radio with the WHK AM 1420 logo on it, as well as an ID tag for an account executive at WHK, WCCD and WHLO (back when all three of those radio stations were affiliated and when WHLO was a Christian talk format). The listing also mentioned U.S. Navy uniforms being among the items for sale--could any of those tapes on the shelf have possibly contained AFN/AFRTS recordings or local recordings from distant markets here in the states?

In Ellensburg today, there was an estate sale for a former CWU professor. That sale netted 16 tapes and I still left behind others that were mostly PBS or home movies. The sale was not held at a house, rather they moved her contents into a local church. Some great stuff, all but one were taped off Ellensburg cable. Note the SyndEx divide in the tape listings - anything pre-'90 OTA was always Seattle, and nearly everything post-'90 OTA was Yakima stations. I have no doubt 4/5/7 Seattle got a bigger audience in town prior to SyndEx due to their higher quality programming, than 23/29/35 Yakima on the translators. Also first finds from ACTS and Faith & Values/VISN prior to Hallmark, and some rare content from TLC, along with a partial CWU commencement off Ellensburg Community Television.

Tape 1 - Part of 'Annie' (1982) taped off The Family Channel circa December 1993 with commercials (need to find exact date); 'Mother Teresa: In the Name of God's Poor' (1997) and first 20 minutes of Columbo (Murder: A Self-Portrait) taped off The Family Channel on 10/5/1997 with commercials. Kodak T-120
Tape 2 - 20/20 story on the 'space chimps' taped off an ABC station circa 1995 (presumed KEZI); episodes of Seinfeld and Hope & Gloria taped off KMTR 16 Eugene/NBC on 4/20/1995 with commercials; about 15 minutes of Water (a PBS documentary) taped off KEPB/PBS the same evening; most of 'White Nights' (1985) taped off KVAL-13 early morning 4/23/1995 with commercials and 2AM sign off (which instead of color bars or static, aired a still bumper for National Geographic: On Assignment all night); after 20 minutes of the bumper, whoever taped it finally woke up and turned the VCR off, and the tape reverts back to a partial recording of 'Onassis: The Richest Man in the World' (1988), an infomercial for Home-Based Businesses with local seminars in Eugene, and sign off taped off KVAL-13 early morning 2/5/1995 with commercials...this time they just went to bed and the Nat Geo bumper stays until the tape runs out. Maxell GX-Silver T-120

Scotch T-120

Scotch EG+ T-120
Tape 7 - About 3/4ths of 'The Sound of Music' (1965) taped off KNDO/NBC (K31AK) on 12/23/1991 with commercials; Davey & Goliath Christmas Lost and Found taped off ACTS (American Christian Television System) in December 1991 with a couple of direct-response ads and promos afterwards.

If you're interested, I have the 1983 CBS airing of Caddyshack and a 1989 CBS airing of Police Academy 3 from KIRO Seattle, both with commercials.

No thanks, as I already have enough tapes. But there's an estate sale coming up this weekend in Ellensburg with at least 400 home-recorded tapes for sale! They all have labeled numbers on top of the tapes. Looks like based off other evidence in this house, they lived here for quite a long time. Same thing applies (likely) as other Ellensburg-area recordings - nearly all pre-SyndEx network recordings came from 4/5/7 Seattle, post-SyndEx from Yakima. I have never, ever seen this many tapes at one estate sale before, 5+ years doing this. Went to a sale in Yakima one time with over 300 tapes, but 15 of 16 were complete scoped-commercial duds. And those were 1980s TV shows (Equalizer, Miami Vice, Night Court, even reruns of Sheriff Lobo), ugh. Let's hope for the best at this one!
They also have a vintage Zenith VCR, must be the one that recorded everything. VR3000 looks like, mono unit from 1985ish.
At the same time I just purchased a lot of 28 '90s-era VHS tapes from an eBay seller down in West Richland! Hopefully lots of Tri-Cities recordings on them. One says Brooklyn Bridge, the CBS show from circa 1995, a few football games, some Ken Burns PBS stuff, movies, some unknown tapes.

First 8 tapes from the Ellensburg estate sale...Work in progress. This will be the BIGGEST estate sale lot I've ever gotten. Sadly, the first hundred and fifty tapes (going back to '85) were not at this sale. I'm not sure why they were not included. However, 150-526 were included in this sale. (That's right, they had at one point 526 tapes!) Like nearly all the tapes I've found here, nearly all pre-SyndEx network programming comes from the Seattle affiliate; post-SyndEx from Yakima (Ellensburg translators: KNDO/31, KCYU (K53CY)/41, KIMA/51, KAPP/63, KYVE/69).
Tomorrow the price will go down and I'll go back and grab 30 or 40 more tapes.

Tape 1 (#418) - Both parts of Buffalo Girls taped off KIMA/CBS 4/30/1995 and 5/1/1995 with commercials (4/30/95 includes the open to the CBS Sunday Night News; already have part 1 off KSTW); 'Home for Christmas' (1993) taped off USA Network on 12/9/1995 with commercials (some local inserts for Ellensburg off Continental Cablevision); 'Bret Maverick: The Lazy Ace' (1981-TV) taped off TNT on 1/2/1996 with commercials. Didn't get around to listing these until now, but I found four tapes at an estate sale in Parma Heights last Friday. Two of them, unfortunately, were defective, so I only got through two of them.

TAPE 1: Last few minutes of Walker Texas Ranger, WWF Raw and partial broadcast of Farmclub.com taped from USA on 7/3/2000 with commercials; couple of short clips from earlier recordings of Farmclub.com broadcasts on USA (no doubt they were left over from other WWF Raw recordings); partial broadcast of Farmclub.com (includes Sonique performing "It Feels So Good" and the premiere of Limp Bizkit's music video for "Break Stuff"), Silk Stalkings and partial episode of New York Undercover taped from USA on March 13-14, 2000 with commercials; partial broadcast of WWE Smackdown taped from WUAB on 2/10/2000 with commercials. Polaroid T-120.

TAPE 2: Episode of Strong Medicine taped from Lifetime on 10/5/2003 with commercials. RCA T-120.

The first defective tape had a TBS broadcast of Grease (1978) and an original broadcast of an ER episode on WKYC, both from 1995 with commercials (and possibly some other content that I didn't see as well), but after I had rewound the tape to the beginning, my VCR ejected the tape and turned itself off. When I took the cassette out of the VCR, I saw part of the tape had actually been pulled out of the cassette. I was able to reel the tape back into the cassette, but I'm still hesitant about trying that one again. The other tape I had problems with had at least one episode of Strong Medicine on Lifetime from February 2004 with commercials (one of the ads was for the theatrical release of Barbershop 2: Back in Business), but when I played it back after rewinding it to the beginning, the playback froze for a few seconds and then the VCR shut itself off. This time, the culprit was a small piece of casing stuck inside the reels--if you were to move it or shake it, you could hear something moving around in it.
On the plus side, the Farmclub.com footage was pretty neat to see. The short clips from taped-over WWF Raw broadcasts had live performances from Juvenile, No Doubt, Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre and Eminem. The tape also had a promo for an upcoming episode featuring the reunion of N.W.A. with Snoop Dogg in place of the late Eazy-E.

EstateSales.net has listed a couple of sales pretty close to me in Bath Township and Copley, but I'm not sure if I'm going to make it out there or not. Forecast is calling for scattered thunderstorms throughout the weekend.
