EMF now the owner of WFNX Athol and the legendary call letters.

Looks like WFNX has an application for a construction permit. What is changing? The information on the licensed signal looks the same as that under the construction permit.
K-Love running Athol signal as WKMY. WFNX call letters moved to an FM station in Grand Marais, MN.
Not sure if anyone would resurrect WFNX and get those call letters.They could reunite the DJs and do similar music and events.WFNX ceased in 2012 with the sale to what was then Clear
Channel and the webcast continued for a time.
A year or so after that, the publication ended.
Stephen Mindich died in 2018.
The archives of the Phoenix and WFNX albums were donated to Northeastern's Snell Library. Issues are being digitized.

As for other legendary call letters, CBS parked WBCN on a NC AM station* that later did talk and southern Rock.Beasley got the station via a trade.
WHDH's calls still exist on Ch 7 and don't know if a radio entity would want them.
WMEX's calls were brought back to 1510 in late 2014.
The WROR calls of course are on 105.7.
When visiting Wilkes Barre PA I found one could listen to AM stations owned by radio dot com with the call letters "WAAF" and "WODS" but simply
part of the WILK news-talk network with the calls pretty much stated only on top hour IDs.
*--Wiki "WBCN (1660) is a commercial radio station licensed to Charlotte, North Carolina which has a sports talk format. WBCN is owned by Beasley Broadcast Group" (they have an FM translator too).
WBCN calls went to NC on 8-12-09 as Sports Hub debuted up here.

I wish someone would resurrect WFNX. Maybe someday someone will. WMEX made a comeback, so I guess it's possible. For now, the closest thing to FNX on terrestrial radio would be WERS sometimes and WZBC (although it struggles like FNX did with it's signal strength). The closest reincarnation of FNX online and on tunein is Indie617 which has some former FNX DJs.
Sure, so long as someone is willing to do it more as a hobby than as a station that will ever make serious money.
Oh yeah radio corporations in Boston won't touch the Alternative format. And they often don't do the best job at handling that format like they did with WBOS. Hence, WBOS is now a classic rock station with a few repetitive "Alt92-9" tracks sprinkled in. Kind of like when Clear Channel decided to flip FNX from alternative to a lazy vareity hits format. So it would definitely be more of a hobby than making money if someone were to dust off WFNX and bring it back.
