Is KRDC 1110 am los angeles shutting down on the 22nd?

Christian Broadcaster VCY America could be a likely candidate as the new owner. They're entering the San Francisco, Palm Springs, and Las Vegas markets at a true bargain. Even on AM and FM Translator, adding LA to their California folder would be icing on the cake.

VCY is very modest. Always has been. They might take it for a very good price. I believe they ended up with a little extra money when they sold their TV station’s bandwidth. Most of their funds go toward keeping existing stations on the air. Their flagship FM is very traditional. Carrier. Just enough processing. No RDS or anything fancy. They own 2 AMs.

Not possible with FCC ownership limits
While that's not going to happen, non-commercial stations are exempt from the ownership caps. Theoretically EMF could buy every commercial license in a market but as long as they converted then to non-comm they'd be legal. But would probably lead to a rule revision.

Similarly, Randy Michaels supposedly figured out a way he could legally own a dozen FMs in Los Angeles by changing the COLs to places in Ventura or Riverside Counties which are technically not in the LA market but are able to be covered from Mount Wilson but knew if they proceeded that the FCC or other government entities would come down hard on him.

It’s 5:00 PM here on Friday, January 22nd, 2021 and I am listening to 1110 AM here in North San Diego County and I am still hearing the “Best of Radio Disney” loud and clear on KRDC. Like other posters have stated, Radio Disney will probably keep playing the music until a sale is finalized and ownership is handed over. It was the same way for KMIK 1580 AM in Tempe, AZ before they switched to the new owners a few years back.

They have to put something on the station as long as they own it. In the meantime, the staff is gone. I'm sure they'd love to have someone at least PAY them for the right to program the station, but who would? There's a glut of AMs right now in LA.

Tavis Smiley's $7 million purchase of KBLA looks even worse, given he could have leased this station with a translator for less.

Well don’t they have to pay whoever is programming the music and station identification?

They’ve been playing a little over 100 songs randomly since the start of the year. I’m guessing the bare minimum of people required to run it (Keeping paperwork, making sure it operates correctly, running the weekly Public Affairs show Greensense, documenting that and putting it in the public file, etc) needs to be done.

In the past, they would shut off stations they wanted to get rid of until they could sell them. If it was an extended period of silence, they would turn them on at the end of the silent STA, run a few hours of instrumental, marching band music or showtunes with a legal ID, shut it back off and file another silent STA. I’m guessing that is more of a hassle so they’ll probably just keep it on until they find a new owner.

They’re currently working on diplexing KSPN on the 1110 site. They probably would need it to be on the air (at least for a period of time) while they build the new facility. I could see them simulcasting ESPN programming at some point. They’ve already been running conflict play-by-play

Tavis Smiley's $7 million purchase of KBLA never looked good under any circumstances.

Didn't he have to come up with cash on deal close date? Did that ever happen? Not closing the deal would be the best business decision he ever made.

They likely got someone from inside the company to set it up, and then have left it on automatic. About the only costs will be engineering and legal. Also remember that Disney has sold the property that 710 AM is on and is moving it in with 1110, so if they are going to try to sell the Radio Disney license, they have to spend on construction of the new duplexed operation.

Who remembers The Grapevine Station. The new facility was built but the owner had no money to support any kind of programing. He needed a buyer. To advertise that this station, surrounded by thousands of acres of vineyards needed a new owner, "I heard It Through The Grapevine" played continuously, non-stop, for 14 months.

They spent a lot of money renovating the krdc disney studio in LA back in 2010 I believe. Completely re designed it and put in new equipment and everything had to be at least a fifty thousand dollar job if not more.

They moved to Burbank from Dallas in 2007 or 2008. After ABC sold off ABC Radio Networks to Citadel. Disney oped to keep Radio Disney however most of the airstaff stayed behind. Some of them ended up on some of the other former ABC Networks. Heard a couple on the Hot AC network. Those eventually merged into Westwood One.

I believe they upgraded automation from Audiovault to RCS Zetta in 2017 or so.

$50 k in LA does not even cover redoing studio acoustics, walls and doors, let alone furniture, audio gear, etc. Likely they spent $250 to $300 k on a decent job.

Maybe they slapped a new coat of paint on the studio walls, replaced the foam cover on the microphone and slapped Disney and/or KRDC bumper stickers over any IDs of the former station and put double ply toilet paper in the station outhouse. They'd could have cost them a bit of money.

Oh, please...one final blast from the past by the Hitmen!View attachment 1565
That is the KRLA I said I remembered last month. Even as a youngster of no more than 4 or 5, I totally understood (in my own mind, not that they ever said this) that the call letters represented "K Radio Los Angeles". This station had the most logical callsign and cool jingles to go with it - plus playing the hit music!
