Saga to Buy WBQL-AM and Translator in Clarksville TN

They already applied to move both the AM and the translator. The transfer is contingent on the approval of those moves. The AM is slated to be diplexed with WKFN with 380 watts instead of the 1000 watts it already has. The translator is also moving to the same location.

I may have missed one, but this means the Saga portfolio in the Clarksville/Fort Campbell area will now look something like this:

WBQL-AM 1400 and FM translator W288DQ 105.5
Sports WKFN-AM 540 and translator W281BT 104.1
AC WQEZ-AM 1370 and translator W260DH 99.9
Adult Hits WRND-FM 94.3
Rock WZZP-FM 97.5
Country WVVR-FM 100.3
Hot AC WCVQ-FM 107.9

Might be shorter to just make a list of the remaining stations in the Clarksville/Ft. Campbell area that Saga DOESN'T own.

Meanwhile, nearly ALL these stations have different call letters from what I remember back in the day.

And that change is because rather than use a skirt/wire antenna up the WKFN tower for 1400 WBQL which would be about 150 feet (ish, or so)... theyre using the entire WKFN Radiator which is like 350 feet.. so it makes it overly efficient.

Once a station gives up its "heritage" call letters, said station will change its calls CONSTANTLY after that. They have now had FOUR call-letter changes over the last three years. This is the old WJZM for those of you who didn't otherwise know (like me).

And that doesnt matter a hill o beans, in many cases.... except for some cases, listeners dont care what call letters used to be or what they are now.. as long as they know how to find their favorite station. heritage only matters to radio geeks

And this particular station, along with several others in the Clarksville/Fort Campbell area, have also had just as many format changes in recent years as call letter changes.

I missed some of the stations, including some HD. The revised list looks like this:

Sports WKFN (AM) 540 and (FM) translator W281BT 104.1
AC WQEZ (AM) 1370 and (FM) translator W260DH 99.9
Adult Hits WRND (FM) 94.3
Rock WZZP (FM) 97.5
Contemporary Christian W256CI (FM) 99.1 (translator of WCVQ-HD2)
Country WVVR (FM) 100.3
Classic Country W264CK (FM) 100.7 (translator of WCVQ-HD 3)
WBQL (AM) 1400 and (FM) translator W288DQ 105.5
Hot AC WCVQ (FM) 107.9
WCVQ (FM) 107.9-1 HD Hot AC
WCVQ (FM) 107.9-2 HD Contemporary Christian (99.1)
WCVQ (FM) 107.9-3 HD Classic Country (100.7)

Also, Bryan Fowler of Fowler Media Partners released this about the WJZM sale:

"I am excited to announce that we have entered into an agreement to sell our 2 Small Stations in Clarksville proper. It is common for competitors to work against each other, but in Clarksville we are fortunate to have a great relationship with Saga Communications and I am happy for them to have take one of our valued stations that has been on their radar since they moved in our Market. The sale of the AM and FM license coincide with a larger separate real estate transaction of the property where we have these stations. This does not affect the operation of our 50,000 watt 105.1 The Wolf. We are relocating our Clarksville offices in the coming months and will have a ribbon cutting for new offices and studios in Dickson later this month. I’m grateful for a relationship with Ed Christian and Sam Bush and look forward to great things happening for this local treasure."

Any word on a format for AM-1400 yet? I am trying to determine what format holes might be there. This station was country under Consolidated (as well as all the call-letter changes!), but I don't see that continuing under Saga, as they already have country stations. The only real format hole appears to be talk, especially local talk. This station has been talk in the past. AC (real AC) is represented by WHOP in Hoptown, so I don't really see AC in this particular station's future.

I was close enough to Clarksville to tune in and listen today, and they are only running promotional announcements over and over, promoting the "move" of The Wolf to 105.1, which is a bit misleading, since The Wolf has been on that frequency for a while now, anyway. Just means that they will no longer be simulcast over 1400 and 105.5.

Let's just hope this doesn't turn out like WCTA in Alamo. :p

P.S. I definitely like the new smilies! (y)

It looks like the translator will have improved coverage after the move. It will be going from an ERP of 80 watts to 250 watts, and ground level of 148 feet to 351 feet at the new location. The maps attached below are theoretical, and are for illustration purposes.

It also looks like the stations will be getting new equipment after the move. I don't know about the translator, but most of the other equipment that 1400 has used for years is for sale.

Once the move is complete, 1400 will be WNZE. "NewZee 105.5/1400, Clarksville's News Talk" will feature national and local news, as well as syndicated talk shows.

I was close enough to check yesterday, and WNZE isn't on yet.

I saw recently where Consolidated Media (who sold the station to Saga) was selling most, if not all, of the old equipment the station had been using. In fact, they were giving the old Windcharger AM tower on Martin Street away for free, if someone would take it down and remove some antennas from it.
