Could a radio network syndicate CBS, ABC or NBC evening news on the radio?

I was thinking about this recently when I picked up a nebraska station that was syndicating their morning news on the radio it was an american standards/ classic music am station. Made me think if a broadcasting conglomerate would or could ever syndicate one of the evening news programs across national radio much like sirius xm does with different news broadcasts. Do you think this would do good or people would listen and has anything ever been done like this before other than in the 40s when i believe all evening national news were done on radio.

Don't some stations still air the audio of "60 Minutes" on Sunday nights?
WWJ in Detroit does air the 60 minutes audio on Sunday evening. I think the television networks could air the network news if they have an owned and operated radio station in a market. I also think we could have more of this type of programming in the future as music becomes more scarce on traditional radio, we could have more news, talk and ethnic programming move to FM from AM stations that could be turned off and the AM band will be thinned out to just a few stations. I see this in the next 10 - 20 years.

Putting a television newscast on radio isn't the same as producing a newscast specifically for radio. The only reason SiriusXM does it is because no one is doing 24/7 radio news anymore. Listeners to television-on-radio news miss the graphics that identify locations, people speaking, etc., along with whatever appears on screen when the newscaster says things like "For more information, call the phone number you see on your screen," or "This was the scene Tuesday as the river overflowed its bank just north of town."

Yeah good point.

WCBS used to simulcast 60 Minutes. If I was out and about on a Sunday night, I used to listen.

Honestly, I didn't think TV audio on radio translated very well. Without video, it lacks any value-add. There have been other news radio stations that ran the local TV station evening newscast. They never seemed to do it for long.

All of the major TV networks have radio services. CBS and ABC have radio deals with SkyView. Fox News and NBC News Radio syndicate to radio via iHeart's Premiere Radio Networks.

Right but nbc news radio doesn't have am radio affiliates like cbs radio and fox news radio do in the sense that nbc news content is only available in form of hourly or half hour news reports the only one I was aware of was wnbc new york now wfan which is a sports station if I'm wrong and there are others please let me know in the comments. Therefore nbc at least doesn't really have the option of airing their evening news with Lester holt on am radio stations terrestrially.

NBC News Radio can offer anything they want. But NBC sold all of their radio stations in 1988. It's a very different situation now. Stations that are NBC News Radio affiliates are also affiliates of other networks. The chances of anyone carrying it are not good. Even in the days when NBC had exclusive affiliates, a lot of them didn't even carry the hourly news.

Back in the early 90's, KMBC-TV in Kansas City, MO used to have the audio portion of their 5:00PM newscast rebroadcast on what was then KNHN 1340AM (This station also carried audio from CNN Headline News in the overnight hours.). It didn't last very long & KNHN later switched to rebroadcasting the audio from KCTV-TV's 5:00PM newscast. About 10 years later, KMBC-TV also had the audio from their 5:00PM newscast rebroadcast on KCTE 1510AM & that didn't last very long either.

So it was just the local news?

That would be another interesting discussion to talk about what all news channels content that was simulcast in the 80s and 90s on radio.

Overnight did they simulcast cnn and headline news or just on the hour news?
From what I understand, it was a straight up simulcast of the audio from CNN Headline News in the overnight hours & a simulcast of KMBC-TV's (Later KCTV-TV's.) 5:00PM newscast. I did not find out about the station until years later, after they had dropped the simulcasts & news format.

Is there really a demand for this?

Not really and that's why it hasn't happened. As I said, all of the TV networks have radio deals, and they can offer any content they want to offer. But it's up to the stations to decide if they'll air it. The stations are under no obligations to run anything.

By the way, the once named "CNN Headline News" with the repeating 30 minute news summary, was hawked to radio stations as a fulltime and/or part-time format. Several radio stations around the country ran CNN Headline News. Generally speaking, the format was not very successful with most stations picking up a new format in a year or so.

KQED-FM the NPR News/Talk affiliate in San Francisco would simulcast PBS News Hour at 3pm PST and would air it at the same time as KQED-TV the PBS affiliate in San Francisco is airing it. But then again PBS News Hour on Radio only happens whenever the NPR News/Talk affiliate is co-owner with the PBS affiliate is when this happens.
