Entercom To Rebrand as Audacy

I didn’t even think to look until this morning but sure enough, my Radio.com app is rebranded. I find this slightly interesting, as I had gotten into the habit of simply searching for an app by (partial) name. So now it appears I need to know to start typing A-U-D etc to get it to pop as an option.
The design under the new brand seems ok. I might have a nit picky quibble here and there, but it’s a solid enough changeover between the brands. A new coat of paint on the same functionality.
The app just updated itself this morning on my iPhone with the new name.

It was a company directive from John Kluge himself. WMMR was Metromedia Radio when they owned it.

Seems to me RKO General did the same thing with their radio stations.
Now that Beasley owns it, MMR Means More Rock :) (Boston transplant down in Philly). Just started saying that they're now on radio.com.

Now they can spend the next few years teaching people how to spell it in order to download their app or access the website. Say what you want about the iHeart rebranding, but at least people could get the spelling right on the first try.

Amusingly, using the app, I got a pop up asking how I liked the Radio.com app with that branding. Problem was, submitting feedback crashed the app as it seemed to be trying to direct to a now-invalid page.

The name Audacy is very close to "Audacity" the audio recording software. Did Entercom realize this when they came up with Audacy. This will cause some confusion..
Undoubtedly they understood the similar brand names. That‘s research 101 in a this kind of endeavor. And they chose what worked best for their needs.

Like the trend of changing company logos to all-lowercase (see: eBay, GM, Target, Xerox...), this name change reeks of "corporate synergy" consultants wearing turtleneck sweaters and having a Bluetooth receiver permanently affixed to their ear.

I heard a promo for the Audacy website/app/whatever on WFAN New York today. They're not even spelling out "Audacy," just putting it out there as if of course everyone knows how to spell a word that didn't even exist a week ago! Maybe a few curious listeners tried odyssey or oddysey or odessey or however they thought the "real" word "odyssey" is spelled, but it's hard to imagine that any of them got where they wanted to go. Idiotic marketing!

I don't know if yall heard the news but Entercom Communications is now audacy interesting. I wonder why did the change their names? I remember one person saying WTSS should be country. But i don't think Star 102.5 is going anywhere. Anyway here are the latest ratings for the buffalo radio market. Nielsen Audio Ratings

Yesterday the announcers on WBBM and WSCR were mentioning Audacy but they sounded as if they had just been handed a sheet of paper that said only "Audacy." Today, there are recorded announcements that include the new name and a reference to radio.com now being Audacy.

What does the word Audacy sound like to me? A maker of management software for large legal firms.

I agree completely.

If Audacy is going to rely almost entirely on radio to spread the word about its rebranded app, they're going to have to spell out the new name, letter by letter. I heard one mention on 97.1 The Ticket here in Michigan that did precisely that. Makes for fatiguing advertising, to say the least.

Do people who listen to the radio really care who owns the station. They only want the content they enjoy. I doubt if people go to the website of the corporate owner. They go to their local station site.

However, in this case, they've re-branded their national streaming player, formerly Radio.com, with the new audacy.com name.

Yes, that player is available at the local station site. But they're trying to create a destination site with this corporate name.
