iHM is getting ready to do what Entercom or Cumulus should've done YEARS ago...

“Righting a wrong has never felt better… You’re welcome,” said Drew Lauter, President of iHeartMedia Atlanta.

Am I supposed to be impressed that iHM took what is probably a standard issue playlist (perhaps the same one used by WLLZ in Detroit), recorded some sound bites from former personalities, and slapped the 96rock brand on it?

Mr. Lauter comes across as very arrogant in that press release.

Does he actually craft marketing strategies for his advertisers? His snarky remark might not be appreciated by people who are actually fans of the real 96rock.

Someone representing a rock station, streaming or otherwise, being a touch snarky? That’s just part of the game. I’d also suggest the number of people getting their news about this from a press release are approximately nil. It’s more a perfunctory part of the process.

And even if a few do see it, what’s to say they won’t chuckle? People can find humor in low-grade snark .

Yes. 96 Rock Atlanta is back along with “The Regular Guys” Larry & Eric in the mornings!!! Enjoy shall you?!
I haven't listened in the AM...I'm assuming this is all taped "best-ofs" and not live. I doubt Cox would have let EvH moonlight.

That said, someone at iHeart sees an opportunity to mess with Cox...both 97.1 The River and the Von Haessler Doctrine on WSB.

Atlanta’s Legendary ’96 Rock’ Returns Via iHeartRadio.

Atlanta’s Legendary ’96 Rock’ Returns Via iHeartRadio.
Picking some pedantic nits and providing a little ATL radio history...the first AOR station in ATL was WPLO-FM Progressive 103.3 when GSU students were programming the station in the late 60s and early 70s, in the days before WRAS 88.5. This was when the FCC wasn't letting Plough or anyone else simulcast their AM side on FM. Plough generally put their WPLO-AM country station on 103.3 when the FCC let them.

Also WZGC was playing an AOR/Top 40 mix in the days after Glen Karen Associates sold WGKA-FM to General Cinema, before WKLS flipped from BM/EZ to AOR in 1974, and before going full Top 40 as Z-93.

But, yeah, 96 Rock is generally "recognized" as Atlanta's first AOR station.

Incidentally, Joe Kelly also did V/O for 92.9 WZNS Dillon, SC (now WEGX and owned by iHeart), which in the early 90s was an AOR station with the moniker "Z-93". It was odd hearing the voice of 96 Rock do bumpers in the name of their Atlanta competitor at the time.

Does anyone remember hearing Jeff Winter (The Velvet Sledgehammer): "96 Rock From The Atlanta Townhouse....". His delivery was (and still is) so remarkable for AOR

I just wonder if Cox regrets putting it’s stations on iHeart?
Probably not as much as Cumulus did. Cox has a non-exclusive with iHeart--Cox's stations are on TuneIn and I think radio.com/Audacy.

Cumulus did have an exclusive with iHeart, in exchange for Clear Channel promoting SweetJack (LOL). That exclusive deal probably kept Cumulus from turning Rdio into a competitor of iHeartRadio until it was too late.

I have noticed that Cox is pushing their dedicated station apps more, though.

On this video about the history of 96 Rock, Jeff Winter tells how he was hired as the first morning man:

They would be absolutely foolish to "bring back" 96 Rock, put in all that effort and "promotion" (if you want to call a press release "promotion,") and not put the station on one of the HD channels of 96.1.

Cumulus could (and IMHO should) have killed that deal during their bankruptcy.
