104.9 Lake FM WTNQ hires local staff.

I'm not sure what they're doing musically, seeming to hear a lot of 90s and 00s that weren't recognizable to me.

They do seem to be all over the map. It's hard for me to listen to them for any length of time, which is usually more than one or two songs at a time.

What radio station are you guys listening to? We don't play any songs from the 00s??

I'll happily answer any questions you guys have about Lake FM / Loud Media.

Ok, so is Loud Media actually renting space & building studios in the Sunsphere? I heard the “broadcasting from the top of the Sunsphere” sweeper on Lake FM & figured it was just a goofy top of the hour id. But looking at Loud Media’s website, it lists their address as the Sunsphere. I have to admit, that’s pretty darn cool. This company must have tons of money to waste, but their stations are some of the best sounding in town. Wish they had bigger signals to work with.
Correct, our TN HQ is in the Sunsphere! Here are some photos I took during our fit-out at the start of the year.

I do like most of Loud’s stations & think they actually sound better & have better production than the bigger corporate chains in town. And I actually kinda like the mix on Lake FM as it sits somewhere between classic hits & adult hits/Jack. Lots more “oh wow” cool tracks on Lake than on Awesome or Jack imho. And Jump and VLZ sound great as well (although I admit I’d much prefer alternative over active rock, but active may make more sense for this market). I just don’t see how the stations can be particularly profitable with their rimshot signals. But programming wise & production wise, I think Loud’s stations are better sounding than Midwest, Summit, or Cumulus. I’d like to see them with equally good signals & what they could do.

Have you listened to the stations? They are akin to someone leaving the lights and television on while they are at the store so the dog won't get bored. No reason in it. Waste of electricity.

That's your opinion.... and getting the utility involved is the dumbest idea ive ever heard

I don’t really get that comment either. The production work on the sweepers/fades etc, is really tight & well programmed (better than the big guys in town). And even though these are rimshot signals with little hope of ever making a dent in ratings, they have taken the time to have live or voicetracked jocks and really good syndicated morning shows. (many similar frequencies would simply operate as jukeboxes w/ no air talent at all). So with the limitations of these signals, I actually think they’ve put a surprising amount of effort into them & think each sounds pretty good. (I like Lake better than crosstown Awesome or Jack, & I think Jump sounds better than Hot productionwise. And although I prefer alternative to active rock personally, I think VLZ is probably well positioned for this market).

The stations are poorly programmed, promoted, staffed, and the coverage won't hit 90% of the metro. They are a waste of electricity. That's my point. Has nothing actually to do with the utilities, has to do with the abundant waste. Be honest, do you ever see these stations making even a showing in the ratings? An actual showing where they have enough listeners to actually make a sale to a client? Is the management just playing radio? It sure seems like it.

As you have a passion for our utility waste, I'll enlighten you.

No, we don't show in ratings because we do not subscribe to Nielsen. That's how this works... Your lack of knowledge on that simple fact makes me laugh at your other points.

We've personally invested over half a million dollars into radio assets during the world's biggest pandemic. With a record amount of businesses that have failed (radio included), national radio owners with mass amounts of layoffs. Here we are investing in Knoxville and other areas.

You do not need ratings to sell radio advertising. Most small to medium size operators in the USA do not subscribe to ratings. We're happy with our programming, operations, staff, and performance. We carry local and national advertising and our clients are also please. Are we playing at radio? no, we're investing in what we believe is a good investment.

You are very much entitled to your own opinion, but it is just that.

As the operator of the stations said, most stations don't sell with ratings.

And most local advertisers don't buy with ratings; they buy based on service, comfort and results. The cash register is the principle ratings device in those situations.

Smaller market stations do fine with no ratings. They build relationships and work with local accounts to generate sales.

In larger markets, there are all kinds of stations that do very well without ratings. Some are aimed at ethnic groups, others are aimed at specific suburban areas or do niche formats. None need ratings to generate the vast majority of sales.

For perhaps 80% to 90% of US radio stations, ratings are either secondary or just not needed or used.

Ricki, I don't have the time to counter point your extremely misinformed post. I will say that non-subscribers also show in the Nielsen survey. Non-subscribers are not released to the media, which is probably where you're mixed up. I'm sorry to say that if you are truly as ignorant about this industry, and the Knoxville market, I wish you well and I'll await the inevitable "for sale" sign.

Youve got to be effin kidding me? Youre going to insult an owner who gladly responds and reveals who he is.. just who are you, Mr Expert?

I just checked the website and took a look at a few hours of songs. It's a broad mix. Reviewing about 4 hours of songs played, there was only one song that would cause me to tune out and it was one of those songs I never liked from the first time I heard it. I'd love such a mix on a station where I live.
