20th anniversary of 9/11 on TV

No they played on Monday Night

The attacks were on TUESDAY

And the Giants-Broncos game was THE LAST NFL game EVER played in a Pre-9/11 world

THE LAST thing people wanted to see (Certainly New Yorkers) wanted to see going into THIS weekend was YET ANOTHER game involving the Super Bowl Champs (Let alone Tom Brady) just because it's "Ratings gold".The Cowboys-Bucs could've waited until Week 2 IMO
That's what I said. The Giants played at Denver(Not the Meadowlands)on Monday September 10. The attack was the next day. What is the significance of the "last game before 9/11"? What about the last game before COVID? Or the last game in Oakland?

The Super Bowl winner has been hosting a Thursday night game for many years. The exception was a few years ago when New England hosted a Sunday night game. I thought Americans liked winners. Tom Brady is a winner. I still don't get your connection with the NFL and a terrorist attack...

I remember there was a video of NJ Burkett of WABC-TV who was doing a report at the World Trade Center for both WABC-TV and ABC News right before it collapsed.

What gets ME is how the NFL handled the game involving THE LAST two teams to play an NFL game (If not A SPORTS EVENT) in A PRE-9/11 WORLD

That is the Broncos -Giants game

What I get is that THIS game should be played in The Meadowlands but what I DO NOT get is WHEN

When the schedule first came out, it was slated to a 1:00 PM ET on CBS

THEN it was shifted to a 4:25PM ET start on FOX

What SHOULD have happened I think is the game SHOULD have been shifted to Thursday Night on NBC as the kickoff game (Rather than YET ANOTHER game featuring the Super Bowl Champions AND TOM BRADY which should've been the 4:25 PM ET game on FOX)

Alternatively, the Btoncos-Giants game could've been moved to FRIDAY night on NFL Network (With FOX producing the game) OR ESPN with the MNF crew in the booth (Remember it was ABC who had the game 20 years ago when it had the MNF rights & last year PROVED that NFL games can take place on ANY day of the week EVEN ON FRIDAYS when the High Schools play their games & it would have VERY LITTLE negative impact)

The game could've served as a springboard into the 9/11 weekend that will undoubtedly be emotional by having a pregame ceremony that could be carried by EVEN THE NEWS NETWORKS

But alas, ALL THIS seems to have BEEN LOST on a League WELL KNOWN for it's CLUELESSNESS when it comes to things like this

Am I THE ONLY one who feels this way?? 😳
Probably.

Of all the things people are going to remember and mark as observances, who played where in a sports event the day before is simply not one. There is zero meaningful connection between what the last pro sports event was, and the 20th year commemoration.

ABC and CBS are showing the memorials live. NBC was showing their regular E/I programming followed by soccer. Fox is showing college football. I'm not surprised that Fox isn't doing anything since they don't have news on their OTA network, but I'm surprised NBC isn't doing anything.

NBC and Fox are directing 9/11/01 coverage to MSNBC and Fox News Channel. Or in some cases their O&O's local newscasts are airing the event.

But the mystery is where is Aaron Brown?? Will he assist CNN with its coverage??
Aaron Brown is now 72 years old and enjoying at least semi-retirement. It's difficult to know if he'd come back if CNN asked, but considering that network kicked him to the curb back in 2005 in favor of Anderson Cooper in an effort to try and attract a younger demographic, few if anyone involved in that decision or programming change back then, aside from Cooper himself, are probably even still around so it may be water under the bridge by now.

As a side note, Aaron Brown had a solid following at CNN, and even from his days at ABC. CNN's decision to remove him and ditch "NewsNight with Aaron Brown" in later 2005 and replace it with "Anderson Cooper 360" to go after younger viewers somewhat backfired, as ratings fell and for at least a long time (I haven't checked lately) Anderson Cooper's ratings never equaled those that Brown regularly obtained.

I was working in the producer chair at Metro Networks in Dayton, Ohio. I glanced over at the TV monitors to see the pictures of the first tower after it was hit, and Bryant Gumble break into the entire network. I said to my co-workers "a plane just hit the World Trade Center. I saw the second (I don't remember if I saw the actual impact or not but the immediately replays, definitely). I said "another plane hot the World Trade Center". The morning shift had ended and everyone else gathered around the TVs. Then it was a plethora of radio and TV coverage---we were providing coverage to affiates and Metro had found us a Fox News feed for stations that weren't affiliated with a radio network (it wasn't the political lightning rod it is now and could still do straight reporting). I heard a lot of ABC coverage from WLW. All 4 Cox stations were simulcasting and WONE was taking WLW coverage.
Yes in Connecticut there was a small radio station running a feed of FOX News being piped in from Metro Network.

Aaron Brown is a forgotten footnote in anchor history. He burned a lot of bridges in his day. Nobody picked him up still in his prime, so I doubt anyone will as a senior citizen.

NBC did show some of the ceremonies this morning, such as George W. Bush and VP Kamala Harris speaking in Shanksville, PA.

To answer the so-called "Kennedy Question"...I was at Union Station in Hartford, CT (Amtrak/Greyhound/Peter Pan bus) that morning at 8:46 am ET. I somehow managed a day trip to Brattleboro, VT. Was lucky to get back to Springfield, MA that afternoon. Caught the last southbound bus to Hartford. All transit south of there was cancelled by that point. Had to cab it back to my home town, as I wasn't about to walk 10 miles.

I generally think the coverage of 20th anniversary has been right on the mark. As in, yes we remember but it doesn’t define us today.

Instead he's announcing at a boxing match where he will probably rant that the election and the boxing match were rigged.

It's probably just as well that he didn't show up and be given a chance to run his mouth at any of the ceremonies. in fact he should have been told not to come.

He is a symptom. The disease is more insidious and will simply find a new figurehead.
Regrettably, I believe you have hit the nail on the head! 😞 Ronald DeSantis is more than ready to fill those shoes on a moments notice. ( and there are many others waiting in the wings, if DeSantis should fade away) I do hope that seatownmedia is correct, would love to be wrong on this! The last thing we need is another POTUS that thrives on being divisive.

Trump still has a cult that worships him as Christ himself, but there have been some early signs of some falling away from him, but not the authoritarian movement he gave voice to. Desantis is heir apparent, IF Trump doesn't run. He would be a more competent authoritarian. The groundwork is being laid at the school board and city council level.

The local level is what’s so important and what Democrats missed. The GOP played a very long game building up local and state seats, putting them into a position to gerrymander the living daylights out of many states. Couple that with the archaic and awful electoral college, and the infrastructure was there to support the authoritarian approach. All they needed was a vessel and the orange one happened to be it. Now, Democrats will need to continue relying on 2020 level turnout to win the presidency, while likely losing more congressional seats. Even when they pull one out, the GOP can stonewall many if not most court nominees. Voila. The authoritarians effectively control the entire government even when nominally out of full power.

Democrats who thought 2020 marked a turning point away from what Trump represented are in for a world of hurt. It was just one battle in a war that will last generations.

Don't forget Gregg Abbott he's the other one that's supposed to fill in Trump's shoes in a moments notice.

Back to 9/11/01 it was a sparking point for the Afghanistan war originally to go after Al-Qaeda but that changed and ended in a thud. Priorities changed over the two decades from Iraq to the disaster that overshadowed that the COVID-19 crisis in this decade.

These Trump replacements are weak, IMO. Not just politically but just don’t have the so called “star power”. Perhaps if Trump decides to not run again one of them might make a splash with a Trump endorsement. But it is entirely uncertain which party has the advantage three years from now.

I remember 9/11 like it was yesterday I got up about 8:40AM when I got back from the bathroom and getting ready for the day I heard on 103.3 WKFR that Towner 1 was hit then at 9AM towner 2 was hit I knew it was a terrorist attack on America. I went to work that day WMU & KVCC canceled classes on Tue. WKFR had coverage until 2PM then went back to playing the music.

You don't even have to wait until 2024. Midterms are really the deciding factor, November 2022. The pendulum swings heavily on either side depending on what happens in America in these next 14 months...

These tv events are rare thankfully. When they do occur mistakes happen but usually are corrected. There will be the next one, nobody knows when or what. Such is life in 21st century America. But in the end tv is still the best way to reach most of us. Perhaps this will change in coming decades, but for now tv still reigns.
