Big news: KUTR is back tonight, about equal strength to WBAP
Was KNFL on day power when you were listening?About 8:58 pm MDT (11:58 Toronto), I heard CFZM "Zoomer Radio" sneak in under KNFL for about 5 seconds with "American Pie" by Don McLean, online playlist match. I tried to record it, but it went back under the noise fast. This is a new distance record at 1,281 miles from Cheyenne, WY. Also, @cyberdad KUTR is back tonight, if you want to give it a shot.
I persume it was just on 940 watts? KNFL was at it's usual strength. Huh, would be cool if KNFL ran 50kw and still get CFZM,Was KNFL on day power when you were listening?
Now I know how far they get with 940 watts.I persume it was just on 940 watts? KNFL was at it's usual strength. Huh, would be cool if KNFL ran 50kw and still get CFZM,
KNFL and CFZM are regulars on 740 in winter. Often they will swap with each other pointing east with little CBX/KCBS interference. I really need
Oh and BTW the car radio is as useless as DXing next to a computer monitor. The engine noise is HORRENDOUS on AM. Even during the daytime, KIT-1280 (30 miles) is nearly useless driving around town.
I sent an email to the site operator and have gotten no response. Issue remains the same. AM DXing suspended until further notice.
What to do, what to do........

I really need KVOR Colorado Springs and KRMG Tulsa, but I don't know what luck I'll have with those. I had a Coast to Coast station on 740 a few years ago that was too weak for identification. I suspect it was KTRH Houston.
Meanwhile, why haven't I posted any new stations (or even any DX) lately? I am waiting for my nearby (Kittitas) SDR receiver to turn back on. Something happened to the receiver last week and it only says 'server not found' when I try to log in. That receiver is the only way I can really DX at night, as it's 6 miles away and new loggings count. Otherwise I have to take my 909X and Select-A-Tenna out to the apartment benches, where 100s of looky-loo college students walk at all hours of the day and night. I am not in the mood to give a 5-minute seminar on what I am doing and why it's not 'suspicious activity'.

Dxing does seem quite odd to outsiders and passerby's, but most won't mind, I would think. I don't know what equipment you have access to, but I might have an idea. Here is a screenshot of what Ryan Grabow did in NYC in 2015. The portable radio is on the right, the recorder device is on the left, and he connected a wire from apparently the "rec out" or "headphone" jack. With this setup, I imagine that the recorder itself is connected to some earbuds that he used to hear the stations without disturbing the people around him. (This was done in busy central park, by the way). I would also recommend keeping the laptop at home because of it's RFI radius, and bring along a phone to do research with (it has slightly less RFI, but still kind of annoying, but at least you can keep it away from the radio if needed) Hopefully this helps, Z.everyone.. EVERYONE.. in McGrath knows what im doing at the top of the driveway in the early dark hours. Even the contractors working on our erosion control project know. I know if someones new in town if they stop and ask me what im doing.
Everyone just smiles and waves as they pass me

I gave it a shot before local sunrise this morning.m There was what sounded like a good signal under KYW and WHFB, but it was in and out, and I couldn't ID it.@cyberdad[/USER] KUTR is back tonight, if you want to give it a shot.
"What's that you have in that 'radio' there? Coke? Meth?" - Every college since the 1980's. "I'm just Dxing". "What's that?" I'd bet you sometimes consider returning to small town America once you're done with university. Not only that, but campus cops drive around the complex every 1 hour or so looking for any suspicious activity. I had strange looks from others when I was FM DXing this summer - and my apartment complex was nearly empty! Other city residents were using the nearby fields to run their dogs around and whatnot.
Remember, we are not dealing with small town America. It's a university campus where the only 'radio' most students know is the Spotify app that pumps Lil Nas X into their Airpods.
This is why I am going to be glad to finally have my own house in the next few years or so, away from hustle/bustle I hope.
I have used the Methow Valley SDR at times to DX the past few days, but I don't think I can count anything from there. Winthrop is 103 miles N of here.
Wow--I just checked it out and heard CHRB pretty well. Also got the 1390 from Maine. Some promising stuff tonight on the Westfjords, Iceland SDR. WBZ, WEPN, WBBR all in....along with a Catholic station from Presque Isle, Maine on 1390. Each with fair-good signals. The surprise was CHRB from High Level, Alberta on 1140. I've heard that one before, but didn't expect it this early in the season. Alone and steady with a fair signal at around 9pm CDT.
Hopefully this all bodes well for the next several months. I also checked the Arctic SDR, but no obvious TX there.
Wow that's a lot of concrete and noise. I've seen some crazy contraptions that's supposed to reduce noise on the internet, however an AM loop is the simplest way to go. I honestly don't even catch up with the popular games anymore, the last thing I recognize is "Among Us", but slmeone actually had to bring it to my attention LOLI could go to a local park, but the parks are closed by city ordinance between 10PM and 5AM. I guess Methow it is until I can get some information from the folks that run the local SDR. BTW, it's the one marked #8 on this site, 6.3 miles E of me:
Oh, also, keep in mind that Ellensburg is kind of 'small town America' once you leave the CWU bubble. But that doesn't mean there are tons of ham operators and such out here.
And lastly, indoor DX is nearly useless too. The concrete walls block everything from the east and west (like a Faraday shield). The N and S are the only directions open and it's even noisier than back in Yakima, and I thought my old place was noisy. Imagine dozens of nearby students watching Netflix on their TVs, playing Fortnite or whatever game is popular this week on their laptops, and tons of noisy light fixtures to boot. Oh, and occasionally studying or doing HW ;-)
I am not in the mood to give a 5-minute seminar on what I am doing and why it's not 'suspicious activity'.
We should throw in a hazmat suit, they never question someone in a suit."Yes sir, just checking for radon gas, it's a public service I offer to the community...and oh by the way, right there where you're standing, the readings are off the chart! I'd move along if I were you..."
