News/talk ratings skyrocketing due to high gas prices

KellyA - I am with you. Paid $4.06 today. I get it. In wouldn’t drive to a specific location to save a few pennies. But, it is interesting to see lines at a station that is a penny less and no cars where it costs more.

I don’t disagree. But, they do firm up their political affiliations every time they pass a gas pump, or see crumbling infrastructure, or homeless folks peeing on Hollywood Blvd. The numbers are against you and gr8oldies. LOL. That part, I am kidding. I think. Let’s see how David feels on this since this is mainly about CA the last few posts.

Do you really think so? You need to listen to Hippie Radio more.

There is definitely a degradation of the quality of life in CA, particularly in the last decade. The area where I lived in Glendale was safe and almost totally crime free in 2007 when we moved there. I still get the HOA bulletins, and a week does not go by without multiple break and enters, car thefts, break-ins to the mail boxes and the like. They are talking about raising the HOA fees by about 30% to hire armed guards to patrol.

Blacks and non-Hispanic whites have left the state. Over 500,000 in the last year is one estimate by a private (paid) demographer. But this group is being replaced nearly completely by the current wave of undocumented immigrants. This, in part, is the source of much of the street crime. But the larger factor is the limitation placed on law enforcement... such as no chasing of criminals... and the fear by police of being not just fired buy sued or brought up on criminal charges.

We are seeing the same thing now in Perú: the new president has no administrative experience and there is rampant crime everywhere. Taxis will not go to the airport at night. You can't wear a watch or carry a cellphone on the street even in the daytime. The US embassy prohibited night travel in Lima and all travel outside the capital city just a few days ago. This is all due to weak governance.

I can't effect change... and would not know how were I to try. So I moved away. Now, we are considering leaving the state due to crime, cost of living and other factors.

Bringing this back to radio, what we have on conservative talk radio is a bag full of nutcases that don't look for common ground, but instead try to find more ways to vilify Democrats, liberals and progressives. There is no seeking of a common ground, and radio just pours salt in the wounds.

Example: KFI just a few years back was top 10 in 25-54. Now they are barely top 20, and often not even that. In a three book average, they are now 21st in the broad sales demo, despite being 6th in 12+. What that means is that even that station's more moderate and centrist perspective is being ignored by those under 60.

And you thought Prescott was bad?
I did not think Prescott was bad. It was just too small for someone used to much larger cities. The place was astoundingly beautiful, it had four seasons, and we were located on the foothill area of Thumb Butte and the view was astounding. But other than the rodeo and the art fairs, there was nothing much to do unless you were part of the "cocktail hour" circuit or a very serious hiker and outdoors person.

And it was far from family... but now most of the family is moving to Texas so we are rethinking our philosophy. We even considered coastal Mexico, but the thrill of an international move is frightening.

David - move to Nashville, like the rest of the country is. It’s almost 2M now, so I think you will find plenty of people. There are also a few billion tourists at any given time. Place is pretty sane, although we are getting our issues thanks to growth. BigA can stay in your place in CA and cheer on Gavin before abandons the ruined state to run for president. Some of this is for humor purposes. Still, seriously, you cannot tax and tax and tax and rule and rule and rule a state the way CA is and then have gravel roads for interstates, trash and debris piling up and give the voters less than they can get in states with 1/4th taxes and misery. I am sad to see this. They can do better on behalf of the people in CA. As for radio conversations and all... yeah, seems like it’s gotta be 24/5 over the top. I guess listeners don’t wanna hear about a $2.00 increase in local garbage fees. I can’t tell ya how to possibly fix the aspect of radio.

Keep in mind I've lived in a lot of states under different parties and governments. Everyone promises change, and none of them can deliver. California was run by Republicans for a long time and they couldn't change much either. Remember Ronald Reagan? Arnold Schwarzenegger? Was it better then? It depends on who you follow and want to believe.

If you want government to fix things and make things better for the voters, you won't get it by voting for the reality TV stars who're just reading from scripts and playing for the media. It will take real work to clean up streets, deal with homelessness, and make gas cheaper. It will require compromise and working with others. Sometimes working with people you disagree with. Most of these candidates don't know how to do that.

Jesse Ventura is another gem! Not in California, but Minnesota.

Both, but particularly Reagan as governor, were in office in different eras. For example, under Reagan immigration was controlled, schools could assimilate non-native speakers, and prosperity did the old "high tide raises all ships".

We have many more issues today, and many more groups that want singular and special treatment. For many such groups, there was no consideration or attention back in 1967 when Reagan was first elected governor of CA.

Unfortunately, no governor or US president can make gas cheaper. Petroleum is priced internationally, and the US only has 5% of the world population (although we consume a lot more than 5% of world energy supplies). So much of our economy is dependent on foreign suppliers of raw materials and products that the US is far less empowered to institute change than ever before in the 200 years it has been a world power.

And then, when we seem to find a way to self-subsistence, we squash it. Today, our better local TV station, KESQ Channel 2, said that one of the lithium developers at the Salton Sea was going to withdraw from further development since the state legislature passed a tax bill that made it more expensive to develop lithium extraction in California than to import it from Zimbabwe, China and Namibia.

The CA legislator who included the tax increase wanted extra money for one of the least prosperous areas of the state, not realizing that providing jobs and infrastructure improvements would do that on its own; overtaxing the lithium extractors will do the opposite and make them go elsewhere.

We are looking more at Mexico and Costa Rica. Nashville is culturally way to distant for our family and our lifestyle.

Yet CA has over $80 billion "with a B" in surplus and is doing things like giving free health insurance to illegal immigrants and free college education to that same group. Yet when a "born in the USA" family member became unemployed and the COBRA ran out, it cost over $1,000 a month to get health insurance that had a $10,000 deductible each year.

The problem is that the radio stations and shows that talk about all this have less than zero appeal to those who voted the current state legislators into power. And there are few, if any, voices that are heard calling for longer range planning and sustainable policies.

But that's boring. Screaming "all Democrats are Communists" gets ratings and sells

'What do yuh mean y'all??' 'Nashville is a town that welcomes overseas furninurs, from Mexico.' ;)
A furinur to many in Nashville is someone from Memphis.
