Why do the local Boston TV stations play a musical chime when the 7-day weather graphic appears?

With the announcement that Cindy Fitzgibbon is now the market's 1st female chief meteorologist, I figured now is a good time to bring up this topic.

  • On WCVB, when the 7-day graphic appears, I frequently hear a 4-note musical chime, with an emphasis on the 3rd note. (Da duh DA duh....)
  • WBZ just recently added a chime when they previously didn't have one. It's a 5-note chime that goes (DUN. Da duh DA dun...)
  • WBTS plays a 3 note chime. Like WBZ and WCVB, the 2nd to last note is emphasized. (Dun DUN dun...)
  • WFXT and WHDH do not play musical chimes, thankfully. But WFXT for a while was playing a 5-note chime, but didn't emphasize the 2nd to last note. It went (Da Da DUN, dun dun...)
My gripe is, WHY do these musical chimes play when the 7-day weather graphic appears? It's really annoying! (And unnecessary!)
 
They do it to call your attention to the information on the screen.
Many (if not most) television stations do something similar. They have been doing it for years.
 
I think I would've noticed it if that was done here in the Fresno/Visalia market. That's it's purpose right? I've never heard of it.
