And does anyone know if there are local stations with old recordings tucked away somewhere... or are airchecks the domain of individual collectors only?

Radio stations are usually the worst at archiving their own history. Most are in the hands of individual collectors, but in the past couple of years, a lot of them have begun posting them where they can be listened to online for free or (in some cases) downloaded.
