More bad luck if you work at KEGL. Even KVIL as an alternative is pulling substantial 18-34 and 18-49 numbers; we couldn't say the same 1-2 years ago!
 
KNTU shows no change. They flipped in the middle of this ratings period, so I guess it’ll be another couple period or two before we see how flipping has affected their numbers. Otherwise, the Eagle is dipping close to the KXT zone like KVIL was last year. I know the 6+ numbers mean nothing, but I do like seeing KXT get close to or beat the established well known signals. There’s no chance of KXT catching KVIL now. *bleh*

I still say Classic Hip Hop is a format that has popped up in many markets, but we do not have it here. I know Radio One tried it years ago, but they gave up on it, and pulled the plug on it in all of their markets. That was then. This is now.

That is beyond dire. KVIL has twice the 6+ numbers that KEGL does. I know the 6+ numbers don’t mean a whole lot but that’s a clear sign that something has gone exceptionally wrong at KEGL.

I think Russ Martin’s death has made the chickens come home to roost for KEGL. They were reliant on him for decades; a man who despised KEGL’s product, refused to play it, and bashed it whenever he was given the opportunity (he was one of those people who thought Nirvana killed music). But they could not fire him because of the numbers he brought in; he carried the station on his back. KEGL needed him more than the other way around. And now they are paying the price for not growing or finding a talent at Russ’ level who would actually back their station and product.

Yep, went the way of Soft AC, which iHeart pushed but ad agencies pushed back harder.

If the Eagle goes the way of the dodo bird, what would 97.1 flip to?
  • Soft AC? Cannot, for multiple obvious reasons.
  • Classic Hip-Hop? Maybe, if rhythmic music is wildly popular among non-black listeners. But it may be less of a description for the Dallas-Fort Worth market.
  • Urban AC? Granted, the two existing stations are rimshots, but I doubt DFW is capable of handling more Urban ACs than Washington DC or Baltimore.
  • Conservative talk? Can't say it's impossible to launch a talk station from scratch and be successful; just look at WPTI or WTKK, for instance. But it will be hard to generate decent 25-54 numbers in this day and age.
  • Sports? What advantages would the new station have over KTCK or KRLD-FM?
  • Spanish CHR? Hey, they launched a Rumba station in Philly, so you never know.
  • The dreaded EMF acquisition? As far as I know, iHeart has never unloaded a large/major market signal to EMF and the like.

it would have to be a hybrid Hot Talk/Sports to compliment Ben and Skin and the Eagle/Mavericks Radio Network.

sports would be the #1 format to flip KEGL to since the Mavs call the station home, and they could give KTCK it's run for it's money due to having a bitter signal then the Ticket since 1310 AM isn't as strong as it used to be and 96.7 FM is a rimshot that don't cover the northeastern counties of the area.

but if they stay with Music, the format must be a hip hop/urban friendly format to match the Mavs coverage.

Ben & Skin and The Treehouse needs to move to be podcast if they go the urban music route.
