Wow! Wrestling aired at 4:30 a.m.? I lived in the Mid-South for a few years, leaving in 1981, and I can tell you that wrestling on WMC was red-hot in terms of viewer interest back then, airing live from the Channel 5 studio for 90 minutes every Saturday morning from 10:30 to noon, IIRC (might have been 10 to 11:30, memory is fuzzy). I'm surprised they didn't opt out of Wimbledon's first Saturday (third round) and show wrestling live, or the Olympic Showcase and air a taped wrestling show in the afternoon.

Didn't USWA Championship Wrestling air at 11am on Saturdays at that time until September 1997?
That was what the Memphis promotion became. When I was down there, Memphis (Jarrett/Welch) recognized the AWA championship and the CWA (Continental Wrestling Association) championship. I believe the USWA was created in the late '80s.

That's right, but Wimbledon Tennis was a national NBC tennis championship held in late June and early July at that time.

It wasn't and isn't a "national NBC championship." It's a London tournament that's the third tournament in tennis' Grand Slam and it's still held during those two weeks. Tennis was less of a niche sport in 1981 than it is now, but the first Saturday isn't the semifinals or finals. That's why I figured that a station in Memphis could pre-empt tennis for its wildly popular studio wrestling show. Memphis never struck me as a big market for "country club" sports like tennis and golf.

WMC was notorious about picking up major league baseball games on NBC in progress after rasslin' finished on Saturdays. I'm surprised they didn't do this with Wimbledon as well, unless NBC put pressure on them to carry it.
