New Sports Station Coming To DFW

I think he’s talking about loud and local sticking around on 97.1. The original jock who did it will have a show from 7-9 on Sundays featuring local music. i was hoping personally that weekends/overnights would be music and not sports talk since they keep saying they’re not a sports station lol
Of course, the show will be subject to preemption by live coverage of the Dallas Mavericks. The first three Sunday evening games will take place on October 30, November 20, and November 27.

Anyone else find it odd that the spot that airs for freaker’s ball on 97.1 still says buy your tickets at Kegl.com? And on the hd2 where it says to sign up for rock news at Kegl.com? Is it hard to voice a new promo?

KEGL.com forwards to the new URL. It's much shorter and easier to say.

I would rather see that than weekend infomercials. Doesn't Rhyner play in a local cover band?

Before anyone says, “omg, give then time!” I will give the freak time. Just my opinion on the first week. I think the people there are very talented and work extremely hard. I do think over time, the “we’re not a sports station“ mentality will get old. They really need to decide if they’re hot talk or sports. I admire their idea. But you can’t have it both ways. The syndicated programming from sports map needs to go. As a former sports radio pd, I cringe hearing people yell at me and try hard to give “hot takes”. I worry the “new” factor will wear off and many people will migrate back to other sports stations. Like I’ve said before. Building an entire station just around one team and having nothing else is risky. The Mavericks infomercial that’s airing right now, i could live without. If I were programming the station, I’d have music overnights/weekends especially went the amount of times they say theyre goal is to retain as many Eagle listeners as possible. I want this station to succeed.

I’ve never heard of the sports map radio network, but I’m surprised and impressed Texas has essentially has it own sports radio network to where 97.1 doesn’t have to rely on espn or fox sports radio.

SportsMap is owned by Gow Media in Houston. Gow owns a sports radio station in Houston.
Actually, SportsMap was called Sporting News Radio during the 2000s. The network had an affiliate in the NY metro area at that time (WSNR). Sporting News Radio's slogan was "All the Hits, No Music." Since then, the network changed its name three times. The network has been called SportsMap since 2020.

I’m sure the Mavericks Hour is part of the contract with 97.1. It was when I ran Mavericks on KLIF. It’s going to be a tough row to hoe to say you are not a sports station but the talk show hosts come from the other sports stations in the market. My thoughts are what is the objective: to beat KTCK or to take market share from them. I wish them luck.

The problem is: What to play? Then you get in the endless back and forth about new rock and classic alt. KVIL already won that battle.
Thats a great point. But, if they’re primarily a talk station, I don’t think it would matter about the music and/or competing with 103.7. The eagle’s playlist would fit in just fine. That’s what got 97.1 in trouble, trying to compete with 103.7. I don’t think kvil won anything. Does having a few good months mean they won the battle? Or did iHeart just not even try to fix 97.1? But that’s for another debate lol! With that format they’re trying to do, how can you stand out the most? If it’s simply sports talk hosts just simply trying to be edgy once an hour to talk about topics reserved for “hot talk” formats, then they’ve got some work to do. Does anyone really think hosts on the ticket and/or the fan are sitting in studio with Howard Stern’s sybian right next to them?

I definitely see what you’re saying. Devil’s advocate question: if these hosts were so great on the ticket and the fan, then how come their former stations didn’t try to keep them? Why were those hosts deemed expendable from where they were previously? And I promise Im not knocking their talent

And also at what point do you just start a new station Facebook page? Every comment on there is trashing the format flip. I know it’s not a barometer of how many people actually listen. I can understand wanting to retain listeners. But, it’s really starting to just not be a good look for their brand. You just have to say enough is enough

Do you know how long it takes for facebook to allow a page to change names? Its been a week, and it’s a little odd to still be called 97.1 the Eagle rocks, is it not lol?

The new Facebook page is 971thefreak. However the meta in the page still says The Eagle Rocks. So they've changed the name but not the meta.

Just checked it out for giggles. There’s quite a bit of “I’m switching to 103.7” posts there. I just wish KXT or KNON got this level of passion.

One of the commenters reminded the readers about the failure of Live 105.3. Can anyone here comment on how Live 105.3 was and how it compares with 97.1 The Freak?

Y’all might say im just overthinking this. Maybe I am. but, the longer they let this keep going, the more harm this does to their brand. I actually even question at this point if “the freak” name itself is just a placeholder name until after freaker’s ball on 10/17? I mean I can’t see 97.1 hosting another concert after this year anyway
